Yeah, it seems as though everybody is getting their ducks in a row and getting their cap space ready for the 2010 season. In my opinion, we won't have much of a shot at those free agents. It just seems like based on the status of this team, nobody would want to come to Minnesota. So, why not get our cap space ready for this offseason, sign a fairly big fish, and then make a splash at the mid-level free agents in 2010.

I think the extra year of Cardinal is roughly equal to what they save in the difference between marbury and the incoming players. ~21(marbs) - ~18 (outgoing) = 3m x 2 = ~6m They would however be pushed into the lux by about 3-4m next year + lux pool. So it costs them -5m. Just off the top of my head obviously. It would however generate a TE of 2-3m which could be used on a player, just take Robinson for example, which would save them 4-6m this year after lux tax etc.

anyway, what I'm getting at is due to how far over the lux NYK is this year its probably possible for them to trade marbury away and take on additional salary next year and the net salary over 2 years would remain the same.

I'm just to lazy to figure it out.

I think it's quite possible to clear a little more space for 2009, make a good signing like Marvin Williams, do well in the draft and maybe with another trade, and then be a very attractive place to play for the 2010 class. Obviously LeBron and Wade aren't options, but wouldn't an Amare, Melo, or Bosh potentially be interested if we had all the other pieces? Or any from the next level of FAs? I don't think we'd have to settle for a mid-level if we built the team right over the next year and a half, of course the very top level guys probably wouldn't be interested.

I agree, but that's also assuming that everything goes according to that plan. If we were to get Marvin Williams, come out of the draft with something like Harden and Curry (nbadraft.net had him around #13 so I'm just throwing him out there), then pulled a fairly savvy trade then we would look good to a 2010 FA. But that's a lot of faith in things going right for the front office.

Don't get me wrong I love the idea of:

Foye, Curry, Telfair
Harden, Foye, Brewer
Williams, Brewer, Gomes
Jefferson, Love
Bosh/Amare, Jefferson

I think we can Bank on Curry and Harden both being lottery picks.
