S&T for Matt Cassell?

Post#1 » by radtech » Thu Jan 1, 2009 5:39 pm

Would anyone trade Nate Clements for Matt Cassell?

Why for NE, they clearly miss Asante Samuels when he left for the Eagles. New England has Tom Brady already, and yes he is coming off an injury, but having Matt Cassell resigned, and then sitting and waiting for Brady to return, makes no sense. Trade him to fill a major need. If you want a veteran backup Matt Hasselback would be a great choice. With Seattle coaching change, he may not survive the new regime.

Why for SF, no offense to Shaun Hill, we need along term solution. In a very short period of time Cassell has proven he can become a full time starter. The draft has not helped finding a along term solution: Alex Smith, Gio Carmazzi, Ken Dorsey, and so on. The Niners have turn to journeymen like Jeff Garcia, TJO, Shaun Hill, and so on. Lets try the trade route. Cassell had a 16 game tryout and he passed.

Clements, who signed the biggest free agent contract for a coner back, played so so. He was signed to be a shutdown orner, a play maker in the return game, and a team leader. How many great plays or game changing plays did he make? For that amount of money, he should have been a difference maker. Look across the Bay at Nnamdi Asomugha, that is a shutdown corner who deserves an 80 million dollar contract. Teams completed about a dozen passes against him all season, ALL SEASON.

If I'm not mistaken, Cassell is a free agent...so unless the Patriots sign him to a contract he can go which ever team is interested in him. So the Niners can offer him a big contract but to answer your question, I would not trade Clements even if he's being overpaid and underperforming.

The niners need to get Terrell Suggs or Julius Peppers

I would like the Niners to get T.J. Housh since Isaac Bruce isn't getting any younger.

Kinda already started along this vein earlier
I'd like to see the 49ers bring in Cassel, with Shawn Hill available as his backup.

I wouldn't actively seek to trade Clements for him though, but if a team wanted to trade for Clements I wouldn't be opposed to that either.

So much for Matt Cassell, if recent reports are true, Pats are gonna put the franchise tag on him.

If I recall, I remember reading something like the Pats wanted a 1st and a 3rd for Cassel, which would be too steep of a price.

I'm open to trading Clements or moving him to FS. He's just too slow now to match up with WR's now, and we need to upgrade at FS as well. Of course it's a completely new position for Clements, but other CB's have done it before late in their careers successfully, and I don't think I can stomach another year of watching Clements playing 10 yards off of WR's.
