ESPN: Starbury wants Boston/Celts want Starbury

Post#1 » by The Rondo Show » Fri Jan 2, 2009 5:15 am

Nearly one year since Stephon Marbury last played in a regular-season game, signals are getting stronger that the New York Knicks' outcast will eventually make his comeback with the Boston Celtics.

That still depends largely on Marbury's ability to negotiate his release from the Knicks after weeks of fruitless and oft-contentious buyout talks, but sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.com this week that Boston is Marbury's preferred destination if he manages to become a free agent and that the Celtics are indeed hopeful of signing him.

When asked specifically about the likelihood of Marbury joining the Celtics this season, the source predicted that "it will happen."

Marbury would be signing for the minimum. He's not going to get the chance to be a cancer, IMO. If he is a douchebag, you waive him and you are out about half a million. No big deal...not like they are locking him up to a lucrative, long-term deal and his deal is going to cause to team to give him too many chances.

I am all for this considering how weak the Celtics bench is. IF he gets here he will instantly be the Celtics best bench player,

If NY falls farther out of the playoff picture I think they'd dump Marbury and his money and sets sites on LeBronville 2010. If the Knicks look like a potential 8 seed though, this could be a dicey move, paying a guy with a chip on his shoulder 20M to play against you.

For the Celtics, there's not much out there right now, and I'm warming to the idea of Marbury if Danny, Doc, KG and the boys are into it. I would think Rondo is pretty secure in his role at this point. It's certainly apparent that Marbury has skill in an area we need; he's been one of the best finishers in the league and would get a chance to define his Starbury-power as a sixth man.

IDK about this move but it's been pointed out that at the minimum cost, it's a decent gamble-- very Ainge-esque, really. I just want the team to have the best shot at repeating the Chip.

Marbury to Boston

Trade/package Cassell to improve the roster, then bring him back on as an assistant coach.

The Pistons and Bulls won rings with Dennis Rodman.

first things first in Danny i trust
second if Starbury is a cancer cut him
I don't see how this hurts our chances
so its low risk high reward type of deal here.

I'm starting to think it'd be a fine enough idea to bring him in, as long as it's only for a minimum deal for the rest of this year. Anything more and the owners might feel obligated to keep him even if it gets rough.

As much as I hate to admit, Cs could really use someone like Starbury off the bench (if his ego can handle it), since as much as Rondo and Perk improved, I see no signs of bench players progress, more like regress atm. But even if he will be signed, Boston really needs back-up center anyway. I'm curious whats the Zo situation, since Celtics are running out of options.
Who would win one-on-one in HORSE?

Bird: Nobody beats me in H-O-R-S-E. Besides, Magic cant shoot.

Magic: Larry, you'd have no chance against me one-on-one. I've got too many ways to beat you. Plus, as slow as I am, I'm still faster than you.

Well, at least Marbury can penetrate/drive to the hoop--which is something I have NEVER seen Eddie House do.

He'd be the middle-ground that cassell was supposed to be if cassell wasn't 40 years old.

He can shoot the long ball unlike Rondo, 35.7% from 3 in 07, 35.4% from 3 in 05, 37.8% from 3 in 08
Note - all that on bad teams. Expect those numbers to go up as a bench guy on a team that gets open shots.

And he gets to the rim, unlike house. a true shooting percentage of 52% isn't great for your career, but it's better than House' 49% - at least considering circumstance. Marbury has been a playmaker for most teams he's been on just by structure. House on the other hand has been on teams like Boston (Big 3), Sacramento (peja, vlade, webber IIRC) and New Jersey (Vince Carter), so expect a hike in TS% if he played House' role.

He can bring the ball up the floor, he's played point guard his whole career. It's a question whether he can run the Celtics' offense, but somehow I think it's not that hard if you put him in with the big 3 and run the offense through the post. The fact that he can handle the ball well enough to break a press is plenty of reason he'd be worth bring in.

His main problem the last few years isn't that he's a cancer, it's that he's been injury prone. In 05 he played all 82 games and, yeah, they only won 33 games, but that was with him as the franchise player and no good basketball players on the team. KG's last year in minnesota, HE only won 33 games. Think about that for a second. Bad teams aren't expected to win.
In 06, the knicks were by no means good, but they DID string together a 6 game win streak with marbury, and two games after that win streak is when he went down and that was when thier season truly ended. They finished with 24 wins.
In 07 he played 14 more games than the season before and they won 33 again.
In 08 he played 21 games and they won 24 again.

He's not exactly a perfect point guard but he's still an effective player who can give you post ups, penetration, and outside shooting. If he does sign with boston, it means he's ALREADY prepared to come off the bench. And at age 32, he's not really that much more washed up than the big 3, though the injuries are the main thing. Since he is in fact healthy, hey man, i say go for it. I mean, for a backup, do you need chris paul here? When you're getting a guy who, ideally, can give you production similar to a manu ginobili type of effectiveness off the bench, i say you take it.

And defensively, he's underated. yeah, there's been stretches where his defense is just plain bad, but i've also seen him play VERY good defense, and with his body, he's not exactly about to be posted by bigger guards, either.

And his assists. I know people treat him like an allen iverson, IE a pure scorer who can only pass out to contested jumpers, but much moreso than an AI, he CAN run a pick and roll semi decently, him and Kurt Thomas had chemistry going back in the day from what i recall.

Maybe, just maybe Starbury has got it through is thick skull that he can't hold a team hostage anymore. Maybe he'll get it, bee our sixth man and play hard and as a good team player. Maturity is the key word here. If he shows some maturity and is willing te except his role then I'm down!

If he plays ony one min. a game it's still 100% more than he's playing now!

I hope and pray it's like a Randy Moss situation. Remember how everybody in Oakland said he's a cancer and all this and that? He came to a winner and bought in cause he knew the team leaders wouldn't tke any crap. Same here!!

Let us hope and pray this works out cause our bench is AWFULL!!! That's right , with two L's!!!

I would definitely take him. Our bench is terrible! He might be crazy but he can still play...

Helllll ya! Starbury will be a great addition to this team. The second unit with actually have some flow with a real PG in there, instead of House. :D

I have no idea if that works regarding soft skills, since Marbury is a mental wrack. But Marbury's bb skills match great with Tony and Eddie coming from the bench. He also matches well with Ray Allen. I don't like Marbury playing with Pierce and Tony Allen though.

Bottom line... let's be patient how things unfold. Only Gabe Pruitt should be really worried.
