DanTown8587 wrote:I don't agree "give him great WR and then you can see how good he is..." the whole point of giving Orton the long term commitment in money and years is that he can raise the level of the guys he plays with. That is clearly false. Yeah the line was bad and so were the receivers for most of the year, but that doesn't help the fact he only had a few good games (against bad teams to boot) and continued to make "easy" throws and not have a big play. I think a 3-15 with incentives is perfectly acceptable and it doesn't cripple us if he is bad and if he is good, he earns three years of money. But no, he isn't a franchise quarterback so don't commit the franchise to him. You wouldn't overpay to keep a decent but not great LB here, don't do it to keep a decent but not great QB here.
I agree about the deal but a big play offense is a mentality that starts from the top down even before training camp. It was never apart of the bears gameplan as we wanted ball control low turnovers and to try and control the clock. Our faith in our defense and special teams is what dictated what we wanted from our offense . If that was really our gameplan last year we couldve just franchised Berrian and had both him and Hester on the outside. Now I think going into this offseason the unquestionable faith we had in our defense and ST is gone and the coaches faith in Orton is up, not unquestionable faith but its enough that that they will strengthen the line, add more weapons on the outside and open up the downfield playbook even more.I think we had one of the best hurry up offenses in the league and that is something that should only help our big play ability going forward .Other things I think that will help.
MOTION - We send no one in motion EVER and it would really hinder jams at the line and allow us to identify man coverage and holes that much easier .It forces the other teams linebackers to also change the way they play wich should help open up things with Forte.
deeper receiver core- with TE's like Olsen and Clark and a RB like Forte we should have the most exotic packages in the league IF we had some wideouts .
Big plays start in the offseason and its a mentality that Angelo has to draft with, Lovie and Turner have to coach with, and Orton when has the weapons has to execute with. I think we got as much out of the offense as we could have if you take into account pace pre injury and the offensive gameplan for this season coming in.
Got a Gold Name Plate that says "I wish you would"

Those Angelo comments that QB is first priority yada yada, while surprsing, might be his way of saying no extension until we see what you can do going forward, we'll see

Orton must win the job???? This shouldn't be our first priority IMO.

Well he's obviously right about the QB being the most important position on the field, where the offense starts, etc. Cliff Levingston does think that Angelo's tone in his press conference put too much blame or responsibility on Orton... like he had all the weapons around him to succeed. If we had a true #1 WR on the roster then Cliff Levingston could certainly understand, but given how bad our WR's are, Angelo needs to cut Orton a little bit of slack unless he can score a #1 in free agency or in the draft.
As for giving Orton and extension, Cliff Levingston would right now. If not for that ankle injury, Kyle could've kept rolling and led us to a playoff berth. Who knows, but he was about as solid as you can expect him to be given his lack of experience, youth and lack of weapons on the outside. Let's be honest; it's not like we can just go out and and find a guy who's going to be significantly better than Orton; we've been trying to do that for years now with no success.

i'd give him a 3 year extension as a sign of good faith...
it's not like the money's guaranteed anyway
sure wouldnt stop me from going after a great qb in upcoming drafts though
