Should we start O'Bryant?

Post#1 » by cfan79 » Sun Jan 4, 2009 10:48 am

Hear me out, this could help our bench a lot. If O'Bryant works out as the starting center we won't need to bring in another big. Perk and Powe off the bench with Baby as the 3rd string big sounds pretty darn good. Then we'd just have to sign Antoine and Stephon and we'd be rolling.

New Roster

O'Bryant/Perkins/Baby
KG/Powe
Pierce/A.Walker
R.Allen/T.Allen
Rondo/Marbury/House

D-league & Inactive: Pruitt, Giddens, Bill Walker

We could probably also start TA in place of Ray...the bench would be a lot stronger then....but Doc would never go for it.....the starters have had almost 2 years to gel together to change anything now.

Why?

I guess you could start him, and replace him with Perk 2 or 3 minutes into the game. I dont really want to see POB getting 18-20 mpg though.

O'Bryant will look like a better player and gain more confidence if out there with the Big 3 and Rondo. This might be just what the doctor ordered.

If a chance has to be made (I wouldn't recommend any), Tony should sub in for Pierce.

Tell me your kidding. POB would get destroyed by starting centers, even with KG alongside him, but even worse KG would suffer without Perk having his back, along with the rest of the starting D. I would agree that it's time to throw POB in the fire a little more with the second unit, though. I like BBD and how hard he works, but you can't teach height.

POB might pick up his 6th foul by the third minute of the game, so this is probably a moot point.

stupidest post of the year by far! You take out our Defensive achor our best shot blocker, out actually low post scorer for a 1st round bust, who gets demolished by 4th string center and cant out play 2 6'7" power fowards to get mins. U wanna take a guy who is average 8ppg/ 8rpg getting into his prime for a guy who cant out play BBD for mins! WOW stupiest post of the year by far!

No need to be a dickhole. Whenever I've seen Perk play with Baby or Powe the 2nd unit has looked really good. Plus O'Bryant seemed to play better when he started in the preseason.

What caused you to post this? Was it the 6-foot airball that O'Bryant threw up when he got in for garbage time against the Wizards that made you finally decide that he has earned the right to start for the champs?

His starts in the preseason were respectable. Thus I came to the conclusion that there was actually less pressure on him when he started. Because the other teams were so focused on the other starters.

This team is a little too good, and it's a little too late to start tanking. Don't you think?
Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...

It's good to see you back to your old controversial thread-starting form, cfan.

I think as far as I could go with your idea, however, is that once Doc brings himself to give POB a few minutes with the regular second unit, rather than just some extreme garbage time, it might be wise to synchronize it with some minutes when KG is one of two starters in with that second team. POB didn't do too poorly playing with him in early preseason, as you observed, and KG might help to solidify POB's performance and to bring him along in game time, as teaming with KG has unquestionably helped Perk's development. And no, this of course wouldn't work so well if the opposition had a beefy center in, but many other teams' backup centers it might be productive.

I see what you're saying Clover, but most of the Centers in the league aren't that big or suck anyway. We'd only have to start Perk against a handful of them.

POB was a great starter with Bradley. I watched him belittle Aaron Gray in the entire first half. Maybe he is not meant to come off the bench. He looks nervous in garbage time. It doesn't look right. We need to do something about his confidence. I know he is a good player.

Yes, but POB hasn't earned the privilege of starting with the other four--and Perk hasn't done anything not to start. We also don't want POB to play that long anyway, and I think it is really most important that POB be paired with KG rather than our other backups in the front court. So all the minutes that are needed he could get in the 2nd team rotation.

Yeah, great idea. Lets start the guy who is 15th on our depth chart. What provocative thinking.
