Actually if we decide to stay 4-3 I think he would be my first choice. Lack of talent does not make you a bad coach.
I think Marinelli would be a terrible choice if the Packers have intentions of wanting to win next year.
Marinelli very well could end up going somewhere and prove to be a fine defensive coordinator, but his Tampa 2 scheme doesn't fit our roster much at all.
That scheme plays almost strictly zone in the secondary and Harris/Wooson are clearly more skilled at playing man to man, especially Harris who has struggled when we've used zone coverages. Tramon Williams also is a man corner and Lee was drafted for his size/ability to play press man coverage. That scheme also relies on smaller and athletic/quick DT's to penetrate gaps, all of our DT's are largely not very athletic/quick fat bodies who couldn't get in the backfield even if a perfectly grilled 42 ounce T-Bone was sitting back there. Jolly at times flashes a little ability to play some one gap DT, but not consistently and that's it from that unit. At linebacker, the Tampa scheme relies on very quick linebackers who excel at penetrating gaps to make plays behind the line of scrimmage in the run game and they have to be good in coverage vs backs/TE's because they usually like to keep the safeties deep to prevent big plays. Does that sound like AJ Hawk and Poppinga to anyone? Lastly, that scheme also relies mainly on the front four to provide the pressure and isn't very diverse, something fans have been screaming about with Sanders. It's mostly an execution defense where you rush four and keep plays in front of you, wait for the offense to make a mistake or a playmaker on defense to make a play.
About the only things similar to the Tampa 2 scheme that Marinelli has coached in his whole life and the scheme Sanders ran is both are a 4-3 and both don't like to blitz much, that's about where the similarities end.
