Cheikh Samb, how we hardly knew thee

Post#1 » by UNLVNugsFan » Mon Jan 5, 2009 10:53 pm

The Los Angeles Clippers today acquired center Cheikh Samb and cash considerations from the Denver Nuggets in exchange for a future conditional second draft pick.

A 7-foot-1-inch center from Senegal, Samb has played in six games with the Nuggets this season, averaging 0.7 points, 1.5 rebounds and 0.2 assists in 4.0 minutes. Samb came to Denver on Nov. 3 along with Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess in exchange for Allen Iverson. Samb was assigned to the Colorado 14ers of the NBA Development League on Dec. 10 and has averaged 12.4 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.8 blocks in 10 games with the 14ers.

Originally drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers with the 51st overall selection in the 2006 NBA Draft, Samb, was traded to Detroit and started his career with the Pistons, appearing in four games and averaging 1.8 points and 1.8 rebounds in 7.8 minutes per game in 2007-08 while also playing in 19 games for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA Development League .

Is this an effort to clear space for a potential trade? Who knows......

So, now we have trade bait in the form of two first rounders, two seconds, Hunter/Atkins?

Or are we just stockpiling picks?

Let's do a Weems/Hunter/Atkins/1st for Steve Blake/Channing Frye.....throw in AC too...LOL

In fact, what the HELL is our front office thinking? Samb was cheap, young, and could have been a legit backup for the future.......and now leaves us without one more big.......

Trade coming soon.......we have to. No way we can maintain our pace with only three bigs.

this deal opens up room to trade Chucky/Hunter.

lots of deals now can put us under the luxury tax... such as:
Atkins + Hunter for Wilcox or Collision
Atkins + Kleiza for Anthony Parker
Atkins for Mark Madsen

etc. etc. I hope another trade is coming soon...

Who the hell is this Samb guy? Does he have any offensive skill?

I think you're onto something there. A Clippers pick is going to be high in either round.

Lots of blocks. So if you lose Camby, you're not missing out.

He can shoot, he can block and he's big. That's it.

Not exactly, supposedly the second is in 2015. Or that's what I saw being reported on another board. Kinda worthless right now if true.

Housekeeping on the Samb trade
By Ramona Shelburne on January 5, 2009 5:59 PM | Permalink | Comments (0) | ShareThis

This should shed a bit of light on the situation. The Clippers are essentially getting Cheikh Samb for free. Denver is paying the remaining salary on his contract this year, which is a little less than $420,000. The conditional pick the Clippers are sending to Denver isn't until 2015 and is 1-55 protected.

In effect, Samb is a free player for the Clippers right now, while Davis would've cost them a roster spot and his remaining salary.

The Clippers will put Samb to work immediately, but not at the expense of promising rookie DeAndre Jordan.

And, more importantly, this has nothing to do with Marcus Camby.

As coach and GM Mike Dunleavy said, while laughing, when we asked about the veracity of reports out of New York linking the Clippers to a strange three-way deal with Portland and the Knicks, ``Oh yeah, I'm looking to trade 20 rebound (a night) guys every day.''

Another team source told me that the club has assured Camby not to worry about the recent round of rumors, and that the club values him highly.

Samby is a baller. He'll shoot as many threes in a game as shots he'll block.

Is this a number we can rely on? I've been looking all over the place, and getting all sorts of different numbers.

Regarding the Madsen-Atkins trade, I think it'd be a good time to approach MIN with it. I expect nothing on the court from Chucky Atkins, but Kevin Ollie, who's been getting a lot of minutes, went down for three weeks, so MIN might like Atkins sooner than later, just to help cover the spot. I guess that benefits you too, increasing the amount over the lux you'd save by making the trade. MIN's also got plenty of PF/C's, so that's not an issue.

I understand that Madsen is not talented, but he's reliable. On a team that's radically changed its entire roster, he's always remained because for his size an a price in the $2's, he's OK as a back-up. He'll never be a big help offensively, but he plays with energy, boxes out well, goes to the right spots on the floor, and is great in the locker room because he accepts his role. However, even though he's started a few games for us, it doesn't mean you should expect anything more than active defense and good cheerleading.

If we can trust the newspaper's $0.2 mil difference over the lux, its a deal that saves both teams money. In 2008-09 for you, $0.61 mil (difference in salaries, + $2.0 mil? in lux share + $0.2 mil as amount doubled in lux) for a total savings of around $2.8 mil. In 2009 they lose about $2 mil (difference in salaries) so you save $0.8 mil. Financially for MIN, its simply the difference. We pay about $0.6 mil in 2008-09, but save about $2 mil in salary difference in 2009-10, for a net savings of $1.4 mil. Maybe MIN throws in $300,000 to split the savings, since you've got Madsen's salary next year (though he does become a valuable expiring for trade).

Anyway, if the $0.2 difference is true, you guys are in a good position after movign Samb, with a lot of different options to clear that last bit. This one is probably the least disruptive. If anyone's got a source that's more definitive, I'd appreciate that info.
