Carmelo fractured hand

no april fools.

DENVER (AP) — Carmelo Anthony scored 21 points and had a season-high nine assists despite fracturing his right hand in the Denver Nuggets' 135-115 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Monday night.

Anthony injured his hand when the ball was slapped away early in the third quarter. He continued playing, but frequently grabbed at his hand. He had the Nuggets trainer check it out a few times when play stopped and then left for good late in the fourth quarter.

The team doesn't know how much time he'll miss. He's going to see a specialist on Tuesday.

"It's sore and stiff right now," said Anthony, whose hand was numb for most of the second half.

though...it is ballsy he played the second half with a fractured hand, and scored most of the time he got it.

Ouch...I looked up a couple other hand fractures and it seems the recovery period tends to be 4-5 weeks. I guess more will be known tomorrow. If there's a bright side to this it could be that his elbows will get a solid chance to heal.

Is it awful of me to be glad it's not Nene that's going to miss (speculatively) 4-5 weeks?

Good lord. Wonderful. We keep Nene and K-Mart healthy, and this happens.

I thought it was going to be 3-4 months and season over... but 4-5 weeks sounds much more acceptable.

And on the bright side, we're on easier schedule in January and All Star break is approaching. I'd rather he be shelved immediately to start the rehabilitation process sooner than later.

Great for him to get rest too but if Nene or KMart gets injured, we might be looking at the lottery.

And on another bright side, Roy is also sitting out games now and Boozer is still far off.

And another bright side is Melo gets to rest his sore elbow, might actually heal it too with so many games he'll sit out. And Karl should see how the Spurs used their role players Roger Mason Jr and Matt Bonner to force them to produce... Pop's take was "keep moving the ball, if you're open, shoot it, an open shot is a good shot as any... if you don't shoot, you'll sit". It gives them confidence. And now they've legitimately become rotation players.

This is an opportunity to give Balkman and Birdman more minutes... and when Melo comes back, these guys will be more ready to contribute.

melo out 3-4 weeks
http://www.denverpost.com/nuggets/ci_11386675
Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony will be out three to four weeks with a fractured metacarpal bone in his shooting hand, the team said. He injured the hand Monday night in the third quarter against Indiana.

Nuggets' coach George Karl said he is undecided on who will start in Anthony's place.

The good news for the Nuggets' star, though, is he will not need surgery.

Anthony, who has been a durable player in his career, has missed five games this season. He also was out three games with a right elbow bruise in December. And he missed the first two games of the season while serving a suspension. But his current injury will significantly add to his missed games this season.

Looks like 3 to 4 weeks. Melo's pain threshold seems to be high, so I am optimistic for 3. There are 7 games during that stretch and looking at it, I am hoping for 3-4 during this stretch but 2-5 looks more likely:

Miami
Detroit
Dallas
Phoenix
Orlando
@Houston
Sacremento

Gotta beat Miami tomorrow. If they lose, it could be one long losing streak that could could bury them. What sucks is I had delusions of the 2nd seed. Now? If we win the division and get the 4 seed I would be pleasantly suprised.

Karl said he has yet to decide who will start in Anthony's place, saying the candidates are J.R. Smith and Linas Kleiza and, surprisingly, Chucky Atkins. Atkins hasn't played much lately, but Karl said the guard has been doing well in practice lately and deserves consideration. Smith started three games in late December when Anthony was out with a right elbow contusion and the Nuggets went 2-1.

i really dont see the difference between jr smith starting or melo.

jr does exactly the same stuff, more range with his jumpshot...maybe not as powerful inside, but he can draw contact. and defensively, nobody can be worse than melo.

I agree, very ballsy. I think he just had this win it or lose it thing going on and he knew he might be out....now Melo's ability to heal and make it back strong will be tested.

Atkins/Billups/JR/Kenyon/Nene or even Billups/JR/Balkman/Kenyon/Nene would be interesting for a few minutes, and possibly even effective. I don't anyone's thought of that lineup but if we can get Jones in there every day we can slip Chucky or Balkman in there for a few games.
