2009 Opening Week Starter @ QB

Shawn Hill has been solid in a lot of respects, but I don't think most see him as a long term solution for the team's quarterback scenario.

One of the guys that will be a free agent in the coming offseason is Matt Cassel, current fill-in for the Patriots. He's clearly exceeded every expectation for a guy that didn't even start in college.

There's the Donovin McNabb rumor that starts every year about how he'd be available.

Alex Smith is still on the roster, but has been plagued with injuries and too many coaching staff changes.

There's always drafting someone new, but that didn't work out so well for the 49ers last time, at least not so far......

Who would you slot as the wk 1 starter in Sept. 2009 and why?

Who would the competetion be for Cassel? I imagine the Vikings would make a play. Tennessee? Da Bears? Tampa? Given equal money, he'd probably prefer those situations. With Brady out possibly longer than the beginning of next season, New England may not be out of the picture.

If they don't sign a starter, it's possible Smith comes back. I'd rather keep using high picks to shore up both lines than draft a QB.

Any other FA QB's available?

Cassell has got the franchise tag by the patriots so he's gonna get paid...Shaun Hill is competent QB and has his shortcomings but has shown he can get it done. Hill is quality backup but I would like to see him do if he had more talented wideouts and better offensive line under a full regular season.

Outside of Cassell, Kurt Warner is one of the available free agents. Rex Grossman i think is another name that is available. So is Jeff Garcia and Kyle Boller.

The Niners need to get one of the following unrestricted free agents.
Matt Birk-OL. He plays for the Minnesota Vikings. He's a ten year Pro bowl center. He's a long shot but who knows. Jason Brown could be a more realistic player to acquire...He currently plays for Baltimore.

Julius Peppers and Terrell Suggs are UFA defensive linemans that 49ers could use...

The 49ers really need to adopt and implement a dual RB type of offense. Gore is the power goal line back but we need a quick shifty speed guy that catch in the backfield or flats. Derrick Ward and Buckhalter is currently free agents that come to mind.

Niners gave Eric Heitmann an extension, so Birk is likely off the board.

Singletary did say that he's looking into Guards, not sure if its FA or draft(Baas is a FA after 09). This team does need a RT.

Niners are sticking with a 3-4, so Suggs would stand up. They do need a pass rusher opposite Parys Haralson, who had 8 sacks and continues to show improvement. They will likely opt to find one via draft instead but Suggs would be a great acquisition.

Denver was willing at some level to trade Jay Cutler (as part of a Matt Cassel deal), what do you think it would take for the 49ers to pry him off the Bronco's roster?
