Matt Cassel; Going once, going twice...

Post#1 » by greenbeans » Mon Jan 5, 2009 10:32 pm

Now that he's all but franchised,(the FO is using their mouthpiece Lombardi to get it out there so they can gauge his value around the league imo) which one of your favorite teams is gonna waste a pick on him?

He's had 4 years to be Brady's personal caddy/understudy and learn the Pats offense to a T. Now he's going to lose the Welker/Moss security blanket and have to learn a new system in one offseason. I like the guy and will forever be a fan because of what he did for us this year, but there'e no way I think he carries this over to a new team.
With all this being said there is a strong possibility he signs the tender, sits on the bench for 14mil this year and goes into a potentially uncapped fa period next year where he can REALLY cash in.

If you aren't familiar with the situation:

I myself am expecting a 2nd this year or 1st next year, I most likely will be disappointed though. whatsayyou?

I think a 2nd is good value for him..even though I do not think he will carry the same success into his new team..but thats worth the risk of the potential reward....

I do not think Brady will be ready for the 2009 season, I think the Pats will franchise him this year, and than let him go after the year when Brady is ready to come back.

Here's a question...If they do keep him..and then he starts 3 or 4 games... do you think Pats will ever think about trading Brady if Cassell does well?
When you take into account age and the fact that Patriots can get...2 1st rounders + whatever they really want?!?!

I could see a similar trade happening like the one Atlanta and Houston did that involved Matt Schaub. New England can get a first round pick from some team for Matt. However, if I'm New England, I try to get as many picks as possible, unless I like a certain player that's on the board.

No, if Brady is right he's not going anywhere. Although a lot of fans(more than I would think) on the radio around here want Brady to be traded.

That’s because Boston fans, for the most part, are idiots. Never mind the talent difference between the two, Brady’s restructured contract would preclude any kind of reasonable trade from happening.

There's not a chance in hell Brady gets dealt. Cassel's been good, even slightly above average, but it's friggin Tom Brady here. Next year is going to be ridiculous, 2 weeks out and I'm foaming at the mouth for next season to start. Tom is going to be on a Jason circa Friday the 13th 2 tear through the league next year.

I feel Cassel is a product of a great system. New England has some of the best O-Linemen in the game and 2 great wideouts in Moss and Welker both can run good routes and have good hands. I think in 2 years time people are going to have buyers remorse on Matt Cassel if they sign him for a ton of money long term.

I hope the Eagles stay clear of Matt Cassel, one report even suggested releasing Brady to keep Cassel and if that happens it would be the biggest blunder in sports history. Why release a 3 time Superbowl champion and the best QB since Joe Montana. Guys like Brady don't come around every year and that he's one of the smartest QB's I have ever seen

Just an guess, but the ones who are saying trade brady, were not fans before the 2001 super bowl. They think this backup QB coming in and plays great thing happens once every 5 years or so.

I was thinking the pats could get a real good pick, even top ten for cassel. But the only team that ended up in the top 10 that I can see wanting matt would be Detroit. And I don't see them giving up there 1st overall selection.

I think Cassell is a good QB if surrounded properly (like any other QB right?)...and not asked to be a saviour.. (think Pennington with a stronger arm)

IMO teams that should really give him consideration from the top of my head
Bears
Vikings
49ers

If he joins a team from scratch...then I could see it ending badly for him and the franchise
(I.E lions and Chiefs)

I wouldn't trade a first for him, that's for sure.

It sure seems like they are franchising Cassel just for trade leverage and insurance on Brady's knee.

If they are going to deal him after tagging him, one of the trade parameters is that Cassel will have to agree to a new long-term deal with the new team. Does he really want to saddle himself to Detroit or St. Louis or some other lousy situation when he can sit for a year, earning $14M and a decent chance at a Super Bowl ring? Can't speak for him, but I would stay in NE and hit the market the following year when he can more easily choose his destination.

Brady being traded is like Lebron being traded--the only people who think it's possible are living in tiny bubbles filled with ether. Elite players don't get traded unless there's an overwhelming reason, and the only reason the Pats would deal Brady is if they are convinced his knee is shot. Then you don't want to be the team that trades for him anyways. Inconceivable (he says in his best Wallace Shawn!)
It's not whether you win or lose, it's how good you look playing the game

the guy was a stud in high school. which was the last time i had seen him before he surfaced this year. so from that time until now, hes still collecting a check and paying the bills. even while at SC. (thats what we do).

but he is a capable individual who has the tools. and thats all you want as a coach, the abilities and tools within the individual. and then hopefully at QB coach or offensive coordinator who can mold the QB and situation into a winning one. thats bill walsh. a true mentor and teacher of QBs. if cassell goes to a system that has that type of coach to guide his progress, he will have the same success . . . if not even higher heights.

wow, and i was thinking, once boston fans get a few superbowl titles under their belt. win a few times. that negative new england attitude would change. go play outside on the greenline or redline or whatever they call it out there.

In the MVP thread you voted Reggie Bush as a candidate. You can't bash New England or any other teams states for being negative, and be a blatant USC homer at the same time.

Like I've said all along, LAKESHOW, Matt Cassel should put half the guaranteed money he gets into Welker's kids trust fund. It would be the decent thing to do. And we can call it what we want, we made the damn things.

If they can get Matt Schaub value, or more, that's highway robbery on their part.
