I mean I think they're under the cap if I'm not mistaken and Miami sent them the cash to buy him out too. Memphis has a very young team and likely wouldn't sign/draft that 2nd round pick so it really cost them $0.00 to make this move I believe. Maybe they were doing Miami a favor or something. I'm too lazy to look into any of this though because I really don't care about eithe team.

It was a conditional 2012 pick. I'm too lazy to check, but usually those "conditional 2nd rounders" are something absurd like Miami would only get it if it's between picks 56-60. For it to be a trade, something technically has to be going the other way.

In addition to the amount to buy out Livingston, Miami I'm sure had to include some added cash for Memphis' trouble.

This is exactly what it was, top 55 protected.
They also got cash and rumor is Memphis made between about 300k and a mill.

This move does a couple things for Miami.
It opens a roster spot.
It keeps them under the luxury tax.
It completely takes his contract off the books for the entire season, where as if they cut him it would only take the non guarenteed portion off.
It cuts the guarenteed money off the tail end of his contract as well, as where if they cut him I believe they would have to had pay him some small buyout amount next year that would count towards their cap next year.

He looked awesome in summer league and Rod and other scouts said if we had another roster spot it probably would have been his, even over Hodge and that other teams in the league should keep their eye on him.

I know some of this was to be nice to the kid and keep his confidence up, but I think for the most part it was truly genuine.
I am actually suprised no one else in the league gave him a try, even on a ten day.

As much as I love Julius, I think adding JC would be a more logical choice. We need a 3rd string PG. I love Keyon, but really don't like him getting starters minutes at the point which happens when Devin misses games. As much as I dislike our small forwards, I think the backup PG position is more crucial. Granted, JC would most likely wear a suit most of the games unless someone was injured, but it'd be nice knowing we have a true PG we can insert into the rotation when we need one.
