Good! I had a feeling rocco was going to come home.
Smoltz would be a good pickup as well, good to see the sox are close.

Yeah, Rocco will be real easy to be root for, so long as he can give it a go 4 days a week. I wonder if they'll bring in another proven of'er or let Van Every/Carter/Bailey be the 5th man out there.
And ain't that something about Smoltz? never in hell did I think I'd see that guy playing for the Sox. Another good thing about this signing is it gives us flexibility for my pipedream Fielder trade Theo's working on

^Yeah, surprised he is close with the sox as well. Out of the braves big three, I always thought glavine would finish his career out as a red sox.
Looks like smoltz deal is about done. Rotoworld is reporting that he is going to call the braves tomorrow and tell them that he is going to sign with the sox.

I'm very surprised and happy to wake up and hear that Smoltz is going to sign in Boston. 5 million with a chance to make 10. Seems like a great move for the Sox.
If Rocco can stay healthy I'm happy to see him with the Sox as well. Good defensive player that really is a hell of an athlete. Plus he's good against lefties, which is something the Red Sox need. I still think the Sox should try and bring in somebody else just in case.

Will it ever come out for the 360. I hear the game is amazing.
Are the sox going to have a press conference for all these signings?
edit: nvm.. balldelli had one today. I wonder why penny hasn't been introduced yet.

Good call.
Actually, now that I think about it. The sox have been active, just not the names we expected.
Ramon Ramirez.
Tazawa
Brad Penny
Rocco Balldelli
John Smoltz

I'm hoping for Kotsay personally.

Re: Offseason outlook/Trade ideas
I doubt they can get Byrnes to agree to basically be a 5th outfielder. Although being able to get rid of Lugo would be nice.
As for Kotsay, he's in the same boat. There is no way that he would want to be a backup first baseman and 5th outfielder. Plus I was not impressed with what I saw last year, so why do it again?
I'd like to see the team gain confident in Chris Carter as the backup first baseman. He can really hit, but I doubt we will see that happen.
Perhaps the team will just keep Lugo and use him as the backup infielder and 5th outfielder.

It's Kotsay. Good call GB.
I agree with ssk though, I rooted hard for this guy, and he never came through. Hopefully next seasons different.

I don't understand why this team won't give Chris Carter a chance to produce. As for Kotsay, I'm very surprised he would come in to play so little. I guess he got a reality check of just where he stands in this fa market.

You know who would look good is Brandon Moss. Too bad the sox had to ship him out.

Sox willing to deal Buchholz
Providence Journal - With the additions of pitchers Brad Penny and John Smoltz to their starting rotation, the Red Sox could be open to trading prospect Clay Buchholz.

That is speculation and in no way indicative if the Sox are willing to trade Clay. I read an article a day or so ago where it said it had no bearing on Clay and they still saw him as a front line starter. You have to look at the long term outlook. In 2010, an option year for Josh, the Sox only have Lester and Dice under contract, so they will need solid pitching. I still think they keep Clay.
The Red Sox's willingness to trade right-hander Clay Buchholz for Rangers catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia does not figure to be any greater now that the team has signed free-agent right-hander John Smoltz.
After signing John Smoltz, the Red Sox aren't likely to trade right-handed reliever Clay Buchholz.
Buchholz remains an important part of the Sox's future, and the value that club officials sign to him should not change due to the addition of a 41-year-old veteran coming off major shoulder surgery.

Re: Offseason outlook/Trade ideas
Yeah these are all 1 year deals. If they would have signed lowe or burnett to 4 year deals, then I might think bucholz would be expendable.
Another deal, Red Sox signed Takashi Saito to a 1 year deal with option for 2010.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Red Sox have agreed to terms with Takashi Saito on a one-year contract with a team option for 2010.

The Sox sure have put a nice staff together. I'm very happy with Saito coming to Boston. I think he could be a huge asset.

I wrote this when we were rumored to sign Saito.
Shame on me, I had him mixed up with Kuroda. Wow.
