I know it’s early, and we haven’t even reached the All-Star break, but it’s safe to say LeBron James’ coming out party has officially commenced. Don’t get me wrong. King James has been dominating the league for the past 6 years, but has now taken his game to a completely different level (if that’s believable).
James’ stats are up across the board in categories that matter. He has worked hard to improve, despite already having the NBA in the palm of his hand, and the results have shown. His field goal percentage has gone up to a career high 51%. His free throw shooting, the previously weak component of his game has gone up to a respectable 79%. His defense has improved as have his number of blocks and steals, while his turnovers have dropped to the lowest of his career.
LeBron is averaging 27.4 ppg, 6.6. rpg, and 6.6 apg, despite his minutes being down to 36.6 per game due to rest during the 4th quarter. The Cavaliers have demolished their competition with 21 wins coming by a double-digit deficit.
Those numbers don’t even begin to indicate his maturity and success early on in the season. His Cleveland Cavaliers have gotten off to a great start and are leading the Eastern Conference with a record of 29-6, with a perfect 19-0 at home.
His ability to make his teammates better, create for himself, and the power and reckless abandon he possesses while going to the hoop has made the Cavaliers the team to beat in the East.
The Most Valuable Player Award? That’s pretty much locked up if he continues to play and win the way he has. His only competition? A man out west named Kobe Bryant. He’s only the defending league MVP, and also happens to be leading his team to a league best record of 30-6. He’s played great, and there’s no reason he doesn’t deserve to be the MVP again, but the way LeBron is playing is just outstanding. All while having the weaker supporting cast to Kobe and his Lakers.
So, let the reign of King James begin, but this is just the start. The party will officially start with James’ first championship. Perhaps this is the year. We’ll have to wait till June to find out.
