NFL Network: Nolan to run Broncos D
Just got it from the NFL Network and 540AM...Mike Nolan is going to run the Broncos D. So, we'll probably need to scratch him off our list.

The more i read up on him the less enthused i got. If either Williams or McDermott gets the job i'll be pleased, then it's just the matter of improving the talent on defense. I'd assume that there are ways to get a feel for McDermott's interest in the job without directly talking to him since the Eagles keep winning.

I wouldn't be surprised if this meant we don't wait for McDermott and offer it to Williams.

It could be 3 more weeks before we can interview McDermott if they win against the Cards. I don't think MM wants to wait that long.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

I hope not. I don't want to us to wait that long. IF we wait and Williams gets hired by someone else and then McDermott doesn't come on board - what then? Moss? Ugh! Some other newbie or marginal retread?
Go out and get Williams - after this (Please Use More Appropriate Word) DC, Pack should get a guy who has a track record.

Re: NFL Network: Nolan to run Broncos D
Nolan didn't want to be in GB, that is why he wasn't hired, not sure Williams wants to live in GB either....much more likely to go to New Orleans or Houston. A bit naive to think you can just go get Williams that easy, there is competition for him. My biggest fear is that they don't get McDermott....

Haslett is the latest top candidate.

If Frazier leaves the Vikes for a HC job it's a bit naive to think McDermott would choose the Packers over the Vikings based on his relationship and history with Childress. There is going to be a lot of competition with DC's leaving for coaching jobs. I feel pretty confident competing with NOLA and Houston for Williams. I would be far less confident competing with San Diego or TN.

Re: NFL Network: Nolan to run Broncos D
One thing working against becoming the DC in Green Bay is that McCarthy will be under fire big time if they have another crappy year. Going 8-8 one year cost Ray Rhodes his job. One losing season cost Mike Sherman his job. Missing the playoffs 3 out of 4 years may very well cost McCarthy his job. A coach may not want to be DC knowing he could be gone after a year, even if he'll get paid out his contract.

Unless the Packers are really bad next year, the only was i can see McCarthy getting canned is if Ted got canned also because i just don't see TT canning McCarthy.

Re: NFL Network: Nolan to run Broncos D
Got this on another forum.
Apparently this guy was right about all the coaches getting fired.
Randolph Hiedler wrote:This is what I heard about the interviews. Nolan came in assuming he already had the job since he already framed his coaching staff. He left not exactly happy since the job wasn't handed to him on a silver platter. Thompson wanted Nolan out of town as soon as possible.
From what I understood is that Thompson was willing to pay the premium for Williams, but McCarthy didn't like his personality. Apparently Williams came off as he thought he was better than McCarthy.
Names that have came up as possible candidates: Jim Washburn, Chuck Cecil, Bill Sheridan, Keith Butler, Dave Campo, Sean McDermott.
Apparently this guy was right about all the coaches getting fired.

If we miss the playoffs it would be 3 out of 4 for MM but 4 out of 5 for Thompson. The heat will really be on Ted. And the easiest way to cool off the heat for a GM is to fire the coach.

No, Ray Rhodes not knowing how to run the team cost him his job (Wolf has said as much) but you do still bring up a very good point. I could see a younger guy getting his first chance (ie: McDermott) not wanting to come into a situation like that. However, strange as it might be, a more established guy might see that as an opportunity to get a head coaching job next season if McCarthy does get canned. Obviously being somewhere when the coach gets fired doesn't guarantee a job, but it does give you a foot in the door.

True, but everyone assumed Nolan would take the job here because of his relationship with MM. He just didn't want to live in Green Bay. Now, I'm not saying McDermott would rather live in Green Bay or Minneapolis, but a relationship with a guy doesn't mean everything, not by a long shot.

How about Greg Robinson as a sleeper candidate?
Success as Denver's D Coord.

True Ryan. It doesn't mean anything, but it's a good reason why we shouldn't wait on this guy. It could be 3 weeks before we get to speak to him if the Eagles win Sunday. And although we're not certain, the risk is there that he could favor the Vikes. THen again Frazier might not even get a HC job so we wouldn't have to worry about MN. Regardless I think we need to move quick. There is a chat today at 1 on packersnews.com. I know a lot of you guys will have good questions. Head on over there in a little while if you have the opportunity.

Morning roundup: Decision time for Williams
So if you’re Gregg Williams, which team do you want to work for, the Green Bay Packers or the New Orleans Saints?
After Mike Nolan took himself out of the running for the Packers’ job by accepting the defensive coordinator position with the Denver Broncos, Williams has been elevated to front-runner status to replace the deposed Bob Sanders.
There have been reports Williams was all but certain to take the Saints’ job, but as Pete Dougherty reported in today’s Press-Gazette, the Packers are still in contention in the Williams sweepstakes.
Which team has more to offer Williams, assuming money isn’t the issue?
The Saints’ defense ranked slightly worse than the Packers’ last season. They were No. 26 in points (24.6 per game) and No. 23 in yards (339.5). The Packers under Sanders were No. 22 in points allowed (23.8) and No. 20 in yards (334.3). In either case, Williams has some work to do and would be in the enviable position of having virtually nowhere to go but up in terms of league rankings. The potential to be hailed as a genius exists in either city. In addition, both the Saints and Packers boast potent offenses, which takes some pressure off the defense.
So perhaps it will come down to which head coach is the better fit for Williams.
It’s anybody’s guess whether he is more in tune with Saints coach Sean Payton or the Packers’ Mike McCarthy. Both head coaches were hired in 2006, with Payton getting passed over by the Packers in favor of McCarthy. Both men took their teams to the NFC championship game, then followed with disappointing seasons the next year. Williams would obviously like to hitch his wagon to an ascending team, so he might be trying to decide whether the Saints or Packers have a better chance to improve next year.
Perhaps it’s silly to consider, but could climate play a role in Williams’ decision-making?
Does he want to work in the balmy conditions that New Orleans has to offer? And do the deep freeze Wisconsin winters work against the Packers’ ability to lure Williams? From a defensive coordinator standpoint, it might be more advantagious to play your home games on the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field rather than the fast track of the Superdome.
Perhaps Williams is waiting to see if any other offers come his way.
The Tennessee defensive coordinator position might open up, and Williams worked for the Titans for 10 years. Maybe he’s familiar enough with that organization and city that he would relish the chance to return.
If the Packers fail to land Williams, McCarthy essentially would be starting over in his search for a new defensive coordinator. So far he has only interviewed Nolan and Williams for the job. The guess here is that his next option would be Jim Haslett, assuming he doesn’t get hired as the St. Louis Rams’ permanent head coach.

I agree with you. I'm starting to get a bit concerned that with all the other jobs either already open or probably opening up, the top candidates are going to get snatched up quickly. If we wait for one guy, we might not only end up not getting him, but might miss out on 2 or 3 other guys who would be good as well. I'm glad I'm not Thompson and McCarthy and trying to hire someone to save my job
