Gregg Williams To NO

Post#1 » by Ill-yasova » Thu Jan 15, 2009 4:48 pm

Does anybody else feel like maybe TT's philosophy of not improving the team through free agency might be hurting our chances of getting a soild d-coordinator. This is the second guy who chose to go elsewhere

It's interesting that New Orleans and Denver both had worse defenses than we did last year. And in 2007 (by a wide margin). Yeah GB is cold but I think it has more to do with the possibility of a non playoff year in 2009 being one and done in Green Bay.

No big loss on Nolan, he wasn't even offered the job. Williams I wish they would have gotten, but he had no intentions of coming here, we were #2 or #3 on his list, behind NO (obviously) and from a lot of reports Tenn as well. They're in an interesting spot with trying to find a DC. They obviously need an improvement right away to save the jobs of MM and TT, but there aren't many guys who could do that, and I think the possibility of a house cleaning after 1 year is turning guys off from the job. Ill-yasova brought up a pretty good point too. We obviously need to make a few personnel changes to the defense, but TT hasn't shown much of a propensity to do that. If a guy might only have one year on the job here, but doesn't believe TT will spend the money to improve through free agency, its kind of a no-win situation.

Do we even know that any one of these guys were offered? Nolan and Williams didn't do a whole lot for me. Haslet is sort of in that same boat. I like him and I think he fits, but I get the feeling that these guys are being interviewed for appearances only and they're after someone who's still in the playoffs.

Haslett would be interesting because when he fired McCarthy it was not at all amicable.

Like who, Jim Haslett?

Don't say McDermott either.

DC's get too much credit for good defenses and too much blame for bad defenses.

In general i agree, but i do think there are select minds in sports that are better than the average minds, Jim Johnson in Philly being one of those. As for Haslett, here is the ranking of defenses under him whether he was just the coordinator or head coach.

NO 1996: 20th
PIT 1997: 11th
PIT 1998: 7th
PIT 1999: 12th
NO 2000: 10th
NO 2001: 27th
NO 2002: 26th
NO 2003: 14th
NO 2004: 28th
NO 2005: 28th
STL 2006: 28th
STL 2007: 31st
STL 2008: 31st

I'll take a big PASS on Haslett. At this point Winston Moss is started to look more and more appealing. I'll be livid if Haslett is hired. He's second tier and he's a loser as Dude pointed out above. I agree that DC's are overrated, but with one of the youngest teams in football we need a coach that will steer these guys in the right direction.

And that is Winston Moss....the guy who would take any job Al Davis has to offer.......ridiculous.

Haslett has been told he's officially out of the running for the Rams' head coaching position
