Pacer's Board Ideas

Post#1 » by Gremz » Fri Jan 16, 2009 3:43 am

To increase activity on the boards I thought that I'd throw out some random ideas for topics.

There was one mentioned to me about poster of the month, small self esteem boosters always work a treat. I also have a couple of other ideas I'd like to get feedback on.

Perhaps a "Best next trade idea for the Pacers" thread could be interesting.

The other one i thought of was "You're Larry Bird. What do you do......." and then run a bunch of different scenarios to get insight into everyone's views on where this team should/could/will go.

Hopefully some of these ideas will help to broaden all our knowledge of the front office, team structure and other posters.

Thoughts?? Other ideas??

I like them man. Anything to bring up the activity on these boards is good by me.

"Plays you can run in the final minute down two/tied"--JOB needs some help.

"Native American remedies to heal our habitually injured team"

"Who takes the fall if Granger is not an All-Star this season"

"Ways to trick Jamaal Tinsley into dressing up as Boomer for home games"

"Items I can break when the Pacers blow big leads"

"How many Pacers (past and present) Stacy Paetz has had relations with"

"Why the Pacers felt the need to inexplicably add a second mascot"

"Why we should even care about the Pacers, seeing as how LeBron James is going to own the Eastern Conference for the next decade-plus"

"Will we ever see JOB trot out the vaunted 'white-out' lineup of Diener-Dunleavy-McRoberts-Murphy-Foster?"

"Over/under in years for next nationally televised Pacers game"

"Deciding once and for all whether JOB dyes all his hair except for his sideburns, or that is some bizarre joke nature is playing on him"

"Best low-cost options for obtaining a low-post scoring threat"

"Should we let Rasho and Marquis' contracts run out, or try to trade them at the deadline?"

Two ideas that I thought could be cool are:

1. Every month the board has a Pacer of the month. During this month, posters can support said player by using a picture of him as their avatar, and we can have a stickied thread on some of his background as well as his ongoing performances. I think it would be a nice way to get to better know some of our Pacers since the whole team is practically relatively new, as well as increasing overall unity of the board

or

2. We could do a random drawing where a poster gets to represent/support a player on the Pacers' team. They use his picture as their avatar for the rest of the season. "A Pacer for a Poster", for instance, one person could draw TJ Ford and they could use his picture as their avatar the rest of the season (or until the game dies).

Sounded like fun until I realized that this game would be over as soon as someone says "The Chinese".

My two cents:

Before every game, we each predict the final margin. Whoever gets closest gets a point, and we'll keep track of this throughout the season, and the one with the most points at the end of the season is declared Pacers Psychic. The wrong result in terms of +/- (Wins/Losses, respectively) is an automatic disqualifier, but since we're all homers and the Pacers will lose, if everyone guesses the same result, then we go by who guessed the lowest margin.

Example (I'm gonna use the names of posters that I imagine would partake in this activity to illustrate):

Pacers vs. Pistons

Miller4ever: +23 <--means Pacers will win by 23
gremz: +12 <--means Pacers will win by 12
Grang33r: -5 <--means Pacers will lose by 5
cdash: -1 <--means Pacers will lose by 1

If the final score is 120-45, Pacers, I win.
If the final score is 87-167, Grang33r wins.
If the final score is 99-98, even though cdash got a closer margin than gremz, gremz wins because he guessed win.
If the final score is 97-100, Grang33r and cdash are tied, so they each get the full reward.

Guesses are first-come, first served (I don't imagine we'll have the same guesses often, anyway).

We could even award points like this:

5 points - exact result & margin
3 points - exact result, closest points
1 point - exact result
2 points - wrong result, closest margin

So in some cases we'd have multiple winners, or just 1 winner. So if the guesses were the same as above, and the Pacers won 117-114, gremz gets 3 points, while I get 1.

Obviously, I'm open to suggestion, but I think that this would be fun.

^^ wow, that's actually a great idea. Kinda like a prediction league for Pacers game? I actually love that idea. I actually remember playing that game or a very similar game to it one of the years back in the day when we had O'Neal, Brad Miller, Artest and Reggie. Sounds like fun. If we have a good group of people predicting that would be sweet.

Would we use the game day threads for predictions? or New threads? GDT are not very active right now.

^^I'd say just create a new thread for each game, its much easier adding to a GDT, as sometimes we're unlucky enough to not have one. These ideas are great guys, let's keep em coming. Would be good to narrow it down to a few and have them stickied. I think it should increase the level of board activity.

I must say i really like the ideas of:
-Poster of the month
-Predict the final margin
-Represent a Pacer
-Best next trade idea for the Pacers

All of the ideas so far are great. Perhaps in a day or so we can hold a vote on a few days for the first few to try out??

Why not try out all of them?

An addendum for my prediction game:

I think it'll work best when we have the prediction thread separately than the GDT, because I think we'll have good GDTs now. Then, lock it when the game starts. At the top, preferrably stickied, you have the tracking thread.

For the pacers psychic game.....How about a margin of points you miss the score by rather than only one person winning for each game.

i.e..... You could accumulate points based on how far off your prediction is to the real margin of victory. Lets say you guess the Pacers to win by 3 and they actually win by 5 then you get 2 points (the difference in +5 and +3). Also, if you were to guess the Pacers to win by 3 and they lose by 1, you would get 4 points (the difference in +3 and -1) At the end of the season each person's total score is divied by the number of games they predicted, and the lowest ration of points per game would be the winner.

Could work, but maybe too much effort. I don't think people wanna sit around and do (even the most basic) arithmetic in a large scale, unless somebody created a table, which I would be down for doing, but this could get icky. We can take a vote on how to do it.

Everybody voice your opinion on how you think the scoring should go. I think the end result should be a factor in scoring, and we count up a tally at the end of the year, whereas IndySports thinks it should be based on the margin on the margin, and an average ratio at the end of the year.

I'm down for both, but the first one would be easier to track. I would be willing to take the point on keeping a table updated with all the guessers and stats if you guys wish to go that way.

It looks like a lot of people like the predict the score idea, so if someone wants to head this and start a new thread for it, by all means, do it.

How is this a "Homer Trade??" There is no way that I would add Daniels into this deal, UNLESS they also wanted to include Beasley... Hell, I would probably reject the offer if it were JT for D-Wade straight up...
