New Candidate.... Dom Capers
I like it. He's experienced, coaches a 4-3, 3-4 hybrid. I like him better than anyone else being discussed.

If Herm Edwards gets fired he'd be my choice. I'll take Capers over Haslett though I guess.

Not a Packer fan? Or just don't want to see them be any good for some reason?

Just because he coaches a crappy team doesn't mean he's a bad coach. We've been over this a dozen times. Are you not old enough to remember what Herm Edwards has accomplished during his 30 years in this league or are you just ignorant? Do you honestly think Haslett/Capers are superior options to Edwards? Gimme a break.

I highly doubt that McCarthy would be interested in Edwards. He runs largely the same scheme as Lovie Smith in Chicago, the Cover 2 scheme which doesn't fit everything we've read about McCarthy wanting a more pressure based aggressive scheme.

True, McCarthy would rather settle with some crap retread like Haslett just because he fits his system. That's fine with me if MM only plans on coaching here for one more season.

I'm no fan of Haslett, but we don't have near the needed players to run a Cover 2 scheme.
We have a pair of quality highly paid man corners, not zone corners. The Cover 2 also is a one gap scheme that relies on athletic penetrating defensive tackles, not fat bodied run pluggers like Pickett, Cole, and always injured Harrell. Lastly, Cover 2 linebackers are generally very quick/athletic and good in coverage. People mentioned that are defense wasn't really built for a switch to the 3-4, well, they aren't built for a Cover 2 scheme either.

Re: New Candidate.... Dom Capers
I know we don't have the personnel. Doesn't mean Edwards would necessarily have to run the cover 2. If Nolan had been hired I doubt he would have instituted the 3-4 immediately. Edwards has enough experience that I don't think it'd be such a big deal. I know I'm reaching here, I'm just extremely frustrated with the direction MM is headed. And lastly I know the anatomy of these defenses, I don't need your schooling, but thanks.
Like I said I'm reaching, so just put it to rest. I'm not going to sit here and act like I'm happy that Haslett is the leading canidate. Just throwing out ideas at this point.

I think it's alot easier nowadays to run a 3-4 than it is to run a 4-3. Gone are the days of Reggie White and Bruce Smith and Michael Strahan. Pass rushers now weigh 260 lbs tops and have little ability to stop the run when lined up over tackles. I say switch to the 3-4 or at least a hybrid version of it sooner than later. It's a lot easier to find a stud linebacker for a 3-4 than it is to find a stud DE for a 4-3.

I wouldn't say that's necessarily true. For as many 4-3's are run out there and as many 3-4's as there are out there, I'd say the number of each that are sub-par defenses is about even. I'm not saying we couldn't successfully convert to a 3-4, given a year or two, but I don't view it as an inherently superior system simply because certain positions might be easier to fill. Also, I question how true that even is. I mean, Manny Lawson and Vernon Gholston were both supposed to be exceptional OLB's in a 3-4 scheme and both suck. I don't think it's necessarily all that much easier to draft good 3-4 LBs.

Cowgirls may make a play at Capers.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Manny Lawson is much like Aaron Maybin in this class. Just because a guy is on the lighter side and athletic doesn't automatically mean he would be best in a 3-4. Lawson would have excelled had he put on 15 lbs and stuck to the playing with his hand on the ground. I think Maybin is a better fit for the 4-3 in this way.

ESPN - The New York Giants are targeting Dom Capers as their next defensive coordinator, replacing Steve Spagnuolo, who was hired as Rams coach on Saturday, sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen Saturday.

I don't think either of those guys are very good football players. They are both just ridiculously fast for the positions that they play, or played in college, and beat crappy college tackles straight up field with pure speed. They have no moves and aren't strong, physical players. Lawson also had Mario Williams opposite him in college if I'm not mistaken.

Re: New Candidate.... Dom Capers
It appears to me that McCarthy is very open to either a 4-3 or 3-4 style of football, he is looking and interviewing coaches who have an attacking philosophy and that really pleases me. I am developing an extreme hate for those who are freaking out the Packers have not named a D-coordinator as of yet, there are many quality candidates who haven't even gotten a shot yet, I am guessing that MM is waiting to talk to McDermott and the LB coach from the Steelers, he should take his time and feel very comfortable with who he brings in. According to Jason Wilde, he never made a formal offer to either Nolan or Williams so everyone needs to relax and let the process play out. The only guy MM has interviewed who I wouldn't be pleased with is probably Haslett.
