So should the Seahawks have sued the Vikings over the blatantly unfair poison pill provision they put into the Steve Hutchinson contract? This is a competitive business and trying to screw over other teams to get an edge happens.

David Stern needs to tell the Blazers to go stand in the corner.

I think the recent choices by POR is not going to increase other team's willingness to trade with a potentially litigious owner. Some owners even told the media that they were angry about the email. Its not a good idea to get on the bad side of the player's association, and they didn't make Stern's life any easier either.

I think this email was definitely a bad decision from a front office that has made some good ones lately.

Shrink or anyone else who knows much about the cap - I just took a look at Canis Hoopus' salary information. Am I seeing things, or AS IT IS, do the Wolves have nearly 12 million in cap space this summer already??? I read somewhere the Huddy and Howard buyouts don't count on our cap after this season.

If so, this Miles situation just made things extremely interesting for the Wolves. We could get a key player both in 2009 and 2010 if this is true.

Don't forget that the Wolves could have up to 4 guaranteed contracts coming on board with the draft. My guess is that they end up with 2 and that this takes them down another 2-5 mil. The big test with their off-season will be whether or not they can move Miller and Cardinal. It is in their best interest to do it before this off-season because while 2010 may have the big names, 2009 doesn't have a lot of realistic players and the Wolves could be the biggest players along with Portland and Atlanta. Miles helps this situation out considerably. I think their best options are to approach a 2nd tier 2010 free agent about a sign and trade (Caron Butler or Tayshaun Prince) or to go after a younger guy from 09 (Ariza or M. Williams, or even Hedo if he opts out). If they move Miller and Cardinal, they could be looking at 20+ off the books. That's a nice chunk of change to be playing with.

Cant the Wolves sign the Free Agent FIRST and then the rookies to maximize the cap space?

If I understand your question correctly, I think you're talking about cap holds now, which is the Collective Bargaining Agreement's way of making sure you don't maximize your cap space by timing the guys you sign. Kudos to you for realizing this method though! What cap holds do in blunt layman's language is assign a salary to the players you have until you have either signed them to a real contract or renounced them. On the nice canis hoopus contract page, they are listed in orange. Picks aren't listed yet, because we don't know their numbers, but they have cap holds as well:

(scroll down to 2009-10)

I'd also add that remember, we usually go with a full roster, so you need to assume that we'll tack on a little salary at the end as well. That will be done with free agents, so no cap holds for them.

There is also a timing issue. The free agency period begins after the draft. They could trade draft rights to eliminate cap space but they couldn't sign anyone before they drafted.

Looks like the Grizzlies signed him to another 10 day contract.

Not only did Darius Miles play last night he scored 13 points. In my opinion that makes Portland look worse.

He was 4-6 from the field, 5-7 from the line, and score 13 points all in 14 minutes of play. No rebounds, assists, or blocks, though. He had a better game than OJ Mayo and Mike Conley combined.

If he keeps working and playing himself into basketball shape, he could be a regular contributor for someone by the end of the season if he gets a regular contract.

I'd think Portland would want to sign him after this 10 day contract is done, just so they can at least benefit from having to pay through the nose on the tax. Of course I doubt he has any interest in playing for them after the crap they tried to pull.

I love drama in my sports.

Coach girls and/or deal with some parents of the players you coach.

(I can joke about this since I have done so for 10 years. Most aren't that "dramatic', but it does happen)

On subject, this is one of the most itneresting off the court basketball stories this year IMO. Miles was a bad character guy, though he hasn't shown that lately. This may be primarily due to his fighting for a spot on a team, but still, he hasn't been bad as of yet. Once he gets comfortable, who knows....

I've coached traveling boys basketball for the last 10 years, just found out my star center who's 13, got his 15 year old girlfriend pregnant. I know all about drama. Not to mention these might be the most "fun" parents I've ever had, always complaining about something. I had a parent tell me we ran too much. Um, basketball is a running sport. Take up competitive walking if you want your son to continue to be a fat ass. For the record, we never run just for the sake of running, everything is within a drill or a controlled scrimmage.

Just for the sake of closure, Darius Miles played his tenth game. He had 10 pts and 7 RB's 1 STL, 1 BLK in just 14 minutes.

According to the cba, this means that POR's exemption for Miles "career-ending injury" is voided, and that his $9 mil salary will count toward their cap in 2009-10.
