I really wish we would break the bank for Nnamdi Asomugha

There, I said it. It's unlikely, but I have to get it off my chest

Last year when samuel was a free agent, I thought it would be phoolish to re-sign him. I was all worked up about how crazy it would be to give a CB that kind of money. I was wrong. He proved in the playoffs that he would have been worth the money.

My Reasons:
-Look back in the super bowl years. Ty law, shutdown corner. Samuel in 07, great corner. Also, both were playmakers. They didn't scrape by with guys like Deltha O'Neal, fernando bryant (he's actually in the super bowl now) and Jason webster.

-Our corners were atrocious this past year. With the exception of Jonathan Wilhite, no young guy stepped up, including ellis hobbs into that mix.

-Like when we went out and spent on AD that year, it was one of those, this is a NEED. We needed AD and he stepped up. Hopefully NA would bring that in.

-I get the feeling he would like to be here. BB has respect for him. He called moss his mentor I believe, right?

Cons:
-I guess you can throw the, Law and Samuel, were home grown talent, in my face. And maybe Wilhite could be that guy.

-$$$ He could be looking for a lot, I have no cap figure in front of me, so I couldn't tell you if this was even possible.

Anyway, Sorry for my 1 o'clock am rant, I fell asleep while watching the ravens/pitt game, and dreamt of this. In all seriousness though, is anyone else thinking about this, or is it just me?

I wouldn’t call Samuel a shutdown corner; he benefited from an intense pass rush that forced QBs into making split second bad decisions. Samuel played off the receiver, gambling on the pass coming his way. Most of the time he looked like an All-Pro because the QBs would mercy-throw the ball at what they thought was an open receiver.

As great as Asomugha is (and he is probably the best DB in the league), it’s not going to matter until the Pats serious upgrade their pass rush with faster LBs. They're just not getting the kind of pressure that they used to when Bruschi and Vrabel were in their primes.

Yeah, I didn't mean shutdown, but he is a play-maker. He must have at least 5 picks in his post-season career. A couple of TD's.

To the second point, what do you think of this Peppers speculation? Apparently he wants to play in a 3-4 defense, and wants to play for a legit contender. Imagine him and AD on the outside.

There's been talk that the Panthers will franchise Peppers and then probably deal him, with the only holdup being that they might do it to Jordan Gross instead. I'd rather not have to give up high draft picks on top of eating a bunch of cap space to get Peppers. Could they be talked into doing a straight swap for Cassel?

On a somewhat seperate note, is this guy reputable?

Don't they love Del-home down there though? Or are they finally soured on him after that crapfest against Arizona?
It's definitely worth a call, he'd be one big piece in the rejuvenation of the D, that's for sure

Delhomme's been solidly league average for most of his career, but he did just turn 34 so I don't know how much longer he actually has. The Cards game doesn't help either but it isn't fair to judge him solely on that. So yeah, there's no promise they'd be interested in the Artist Formerly Known as Rusher McFumbles, it was just a thought. Long story short, it's unlikely that Peppers ends up with the Pats unless he really pushes to play here. Personally I think he could handle OLB in a 3-4 (he's a physical freak and Carolina already plays him like a hybrid guy sometimes anyway) but it's tough to say whether he'd be as effective as he is as a 4-3 DE. The Pats might be better off looking in the draft and using their cap space elsewhere.

Cassel for Peppers makes too much sense. So, sadly, it probably won't happen.

I am not sure if that salary guy is legit or not. He seems to be.
