That was an incredible performance... Kentucky could be a really dangerous team if they could get more of those kinds of games from him... Tennessee on the other hand, their more of an athletic team without the basketball skills.

Re: January game thread
Tennessee's major problem is the fact that they cannot shoot the ball right now. Lofton is looking more and more like a heavy loss. Smith hasn't really assumed as much of a leadership role as he probably will late in the year. (in terms of leading by example here) JP Prince is really what makes this team special, and he has had subpar performances coming off of an injury. When he gets back to full strength and they start hitting their perimeter shots, they can hang with anyone in the country.

Kind of a sad statement on Kentucky's part, but I agree that they likely need someone to score 54 ppg to win these days. They just don't have the horses anymore.

True. But what's sad is that Kentucky looks like the best team in the SEC right now. What an awful conference. They should just skip right to spring practice for football.

College basketball continues to get more unpredictable and incredible every day...
Georgetown kills Syracuse...
Wake continues their dominance with a 20 point halftime lead over BC
Miami (OH) loses to Ohio (ughhh)
Curry drops 39
Arkansas loses again
Illinois State beats Drake

Re: January game thread
Illinois St. is still the top team in the Missouri Valley. Oguchi has been playing with a knee injury according to sources. They really have missed his consistent output, as his numbers took a drastic dive recently.
UMass is an enigma at this point. They go out and beat Kansas on the road and Dayton at home. Then they have head scratching losses. I don't know what to make of them at this stage.
Arkansas's losses are interesting. LSU won today and continue to show signs at home, while not picking it up on the road.
Rutgers blows a lead and Cincinatti regains some confidence.

First, UK doesn't need 54 points to win. Patrick Patterson is their best player overall. Meeks is the best scorer and a very good player. Between the two of them, you have one of the best inside-outside tandems in the country. What UK needs is more from the rest of the team and they have some talented guys who should be good role players in Liggins, Stevenson, Miller, Harrelson, etc.
As far as the SEC, it is clearly down but please don't try to pretend like they can't compete with other conferences.
Arkansas beat #4 Oklahoma
Arkansas beat #7 Texas
Tennessee beat #13 Georgetown
#18 UL had to get a lucky 3pt shot to beat UK on a night when UK turned the ball over like crazy and UL was hot from 3pt range
SEC teams have beaten ACC teams, Big East teams, Big 12 teams, etc.
They are down and as a conference clearly aren't in the conversation with a conference like the Big East but aren't exactly in the shut it down category as Georgetown, Oklahoma, etc. will tell you.

Re: January game thread
The main problem that I see with the SEC right now is that those very teams you are mentioning (the ones that upset in the nonconference) have lost already in conference. (and looked poor doing so) Tennessee was crushed by Meeks. Mississippi just defeated Arkansas.
Florida and UK seem to be the likely candidates for the tournament at this point with nearly every team having an outside shot. South Carolina has some talent and upset Baylor. That could be a signature win for their resume. LSU is beating teams and has a gaudy record, despite the fact that they can't win on the road. Alabama has some talent but is fairly inconsistent, living and dying by the inconsistent play of guys like Gee.
The SEC is really down....it's not just marginally.

It's a 2 way street though now isn't it?
Kentucky lost to VMI
Georgia lost to Loyola Chicago and Texas A&M CC
South Carolina lost to Charleston
Vanderbilt lost to UIC
Alabama lost to Mercer
Auburn lost to Mercer
Arkansas lost to Missouri State
LSU lost by 30 at Utah
Ole Miss lost by 33 at New Mexico
Mississippi State lost to San Diego
Really only Tennessee and Florida don't have inexcusable losses. But Florida's played just one ranked team and Tennessee let a man score 54 points on their home floor. Honestly, the Mountain West is a superior conference to the SEC, as evidenced by Utah hammering LSU and New Mexico manhandling Ole Miss. BYU and UNLV could most definitely win the SEC. The days of Pitino and Nolan Richardson and Dale Brown are long gone. I'm sure the league will eventually, and quickly, regroup. But right now it's just a subpar basketball conference.

Re: January game thread
Not for nothing, but Tennessee has given up, I believe, 4 career highs this season, I believe 3 of which were 40+ and 1 that was 30+.
That is not taken anything away from the incredible performance by Meeks, but more so to look at how terrible their perimeter defense and closeout and switches are.

Re: January game thread
well okie state lost today w/some shoddy officiating in waco. baylor gets a very very very questionable foul call with 2.5 seconds left after okie state had a 1 point lead on keiton page's 3 go ahead 3 point bucket. and of course we fell apart in OT since half our f*ckin team was either in foul trouble or fouled out
pathetic. just remember the name keiton page, probably not for this year but in future years, he's a freshman 5'9 white guy, not that quick but can shoot lights out and from anywhere on the court. when byron eaton fouled out this kid when we're down 5 gets a 3 point play and then the next possession hits a go ahead 3 w/10 seconds left. kids got some balls

Re: January game thread
Down goes Pitt. Louisville's press just got the best of them. If the coaches keep Wake beneath Duke again in the polls then their poll has no credibility. Duke had a great win at home over Georgetown but Wake winning at Clemson was just more impressive.

Re: January game thread
I agree that Wake needs to be the number 1 team. They are the only remaining undefeated team and one of two teams to defeat UNC. While Duke has defeated some quality opponents including a great Georgetown team, Wake has just been more impressive thus far.
Still, I see the potential for Wake to slip up against a team like Duke or UNC at Chapel Hill. But for now, they are certainly the most deserving. Wake and Syracuse this high just goes to show that preseason polls mean nothing and are very shortsighted sometimes.

Re: January game thread
Northwestern knocks off Michigan State in East Lansing. Koble was incredible. Kalin Lucas played well but Sparty looked awful against Northwestern's 1-3-1 half court trap just turning the ball over left and right. You would think that would also spell trouble for them against Beilein and Michigan. Northwestern now with back to back wins over Minnesota and Michigan State while blowing a 10 point lead with 6 minutes to go to Purdue. They're 9 quality teams in the Big Ten this season. Only Indiana and Iowa are non competitve.

Re: January game thread
and after a near epic collapse by mizzou we get f*cked by the refs the 2nd game of the row. the ref calls a f*cking jump ball when byron eaton gets hacked. how the f*ck does that happen, a ref completely out of position calls a jump ball when the ball wasnt even blocked
