OT: Here's to a fresh start

Post#1 » by Cyclical » Tue Jan 20, 2009 9:26 pm

Yes, this is a basketball forum but a presidential inauguration happens only once in every 4 years and what happened today happens only once in a lifetime. Whether you're a democrat, republican, independent or simply a-political, we can all agree that our country needs a huge shot in the arm. So here's to Barack and the new administration. May you serve and represent all Americans with dignity and truth, restore trust and respect, live up to your promise and realize our potential.

Peace.

Amen to that. Also, a toast to the end of 8 years of lies, war, torture, illegal detainment, lies, economic disaster, lies, loss of respect by the world at large, and oh yes, lies. Good-bye, good riddance, and don't call us, we'll call you.

That is a but much. But yes, it was a very exciting day, and most importantly historic. That said, people booing President Bush today was very upsetting. For all you may dislike about that administration, and there is plenty, we should always show respect for the president. It is the most important and most difficult office to assume in the world. If we are to move into an era of political civility like Obama has talked about, after 16 years of political divisiveness and pettiness, those types of gestures need to stop. Further, we should not castoff ex-presidents. It is surprising sometimes how even the bad ones, like Carter, can improve their image and do more out of office than they did in it. I know Laura does a lot of work for women's rights in Afghanistan and President Bush plans to do work with AIDS in Africa. Here also, is to hoping for both of their success in those ventures.

I don't lay it all on Bush's feet, and said nothing directly disrespectful about him in my post. To clarify, if I had said ,"Bush is an illiterate corporate lackey who is helped make this world a worse place in the name of greed," that would be disrespectful, and is, because I mean it. What I refered to in my post was his administration at large, and I meant every word. I could go on and on but I won't, except to say I wish Bush better luck in future ventures, I'm happy to move on and glad somone I voted for is finally in office.

Best wishes and hopes for success from a Canuck. Your new President seems a very good man and a very good choice as leader. It's quite exciting to watch such a monumental date in history.

The impressive thing is that the excitement of Obama taking office is able to overshadow the excitement of Bush leaving.
