Rondo throws ball into stands and no call

Post#1 » by campybatman » Sun Jan 25, 2009 7:20 pm

The referee was standing right there. I wonder did he say something to Rondo. I wonder did the ball hit anyone. Anyone know why that wasn't a technical? Well, Garnett curses on the floor and tends to get away with it. So, the referees probably do look the other way somethings.

he meant to throw it at teh backboard, and throw it back to himself. alot of players do that after a foul or when the play is dead or whatever, and he missed. I think the refs realized this. But, it still should of been a tech.

Yeah that was strange. I think everyone knows Rondo isn't some hothead and it was clearly accidental but yeah, should have been a tech probably.

It probably might have been if the ball had actually hit someone. My guess is a fan caught it.

Looked like he was trying to hit the backboard. But I agree he should have gotten a T.

Yes, the official rule, section 6 paragraph 4 states:

"When a dude with really huge hands gets a bit miffed and tries to toss the ball off the backboard but the ball slips and goes into the crowd, he does not get a technical because with jumbo mitts like those frisbees he couldn't possibly know a thing like that might happen."

After the ticky tack fouls called in the Orlando game and this game...and the Belinelli flopping & getting the calls...and the 6 guys on the court basket....I think the refs could give us a break on this one.

NBA rules: http://www.nba.com/analysis/rules_index.html
Infractions: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technical_foul

The NBA rules are a tad complicated but from what I'm reading and understand from reading around. One of two things should have had occurred after Rondo threw the ball into the stands be it intentional or accidental. Boston would've been accessed a delay of game warning or Rondo would've been accessed a technical foul.

Interestingly, both Pierce and Garnett experienced in their career a moment of frustration and subsequently were fined. Actually, the Garnett incident was brought up by the TV announcers soon after Rondo threw the ball.

Pierce fined $7,500 by NBA

Jan 09, 2004 8:31 PM EST

NEW YORK (AP) Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics was fined $7,500 by the NBA on Friday for throwing and kicking a basketball into the stands during a game in early November.

Pierce received a technical foul for throwing the ball into the stands with 6:29 remaining in the third quarter of a 101-93 win over Orlando on Jan. 7. He also kicked the ball into the stands at the conclusion of the game.

Garnett fined for throwing ball into stands

February 27, 2006, 7:21 PM ET

NEW YORK -- Timberwolves forward Kevin Garnett was fined $5,000 by the NBA on Monday for throwing a basketball into the stands in a win over Memphis.

Garnett accidentally hit a fan when he tossed the ball away in the third quarter Sunday. He was reacting in frustration after being called for an offensive foul and was ejected from the game.

Medical personnel examined the fan, who was wheeled from the court on a gurney to boos and later walked with his family and arena personnel to a back room. His condition wasn't immediately available, although he appeared to be uninjured.

Garnett said Sunday that he didn't intend to throw the ball into the stands but was trying to get a delay-of-game call.

"By no means was I trying to hit a fan," he said.
