Scalabrine out for "extended period of time"

Post#1 » by MVP16 » Tue Jan 27, 2009 6:18 pm

WALTHAM -- Celtics forward Brian Scalabrine was taken to New England Baptist Hospital after suffering a concussion at practice today, and coach Doc Rivers said he expects the forward to be out for an extended period of time.

Scalabrine originally suffered a concussion against Dallas last Sunday and received another when he bumped into teammate Patrick O'Bryant while trying to get a rebound at practice today.

Scalabrine is averaging 3.1 points and 1.3 rebounds this season.

"He got hit in the head and just had a mild concussion," Rivers said. "I don't know if he is out, but it's close. He'll be out probably for quite some time."

That is to bad. Brian has been playing well of late. Now will Doc play POB more or just have BBD and Powe take up the minutes.

Not all concussions are created equal, but Davis missed what, about 2 games, with his from a car accident?

I wonder if Dirk's MMA elbows were the original cause of the concussion?

Damnit, 3 and a half years I've been waiting for the guy to go down and now that he's finally starting to win me over he goes out. Just great.

What a terrible time for Scal. He's been playing very well for the team lately and this happens. This does open a door for Powe and possibly O'bryant.

Scal got the first concussion from Dirk on Sunday with the elbow to the chin...he sat out the next day, went to practice today, and then got concussed by POB during practice. If you suffer two concussions like that in succession, it means the brain has been traumatized and is great danger of more concussions (each new concussion increases the likelihood of more concussions, concussions that take less contact to occur) and possible long term brain damage. So, two concussions like that, back-to-back, will probably put Scal on the shelf for a month to 6 weeks. Tough break for him and the Cs. Powe needs to take this break and run with it.

I hope his BBIQ isn't damaged, cuz to be honest, that's all he's got. Isn't it usually Scal who injures other guys in practice? Maybe he passed the torch to POB.

Well, he shouldn't have commited that foul on Dirk's elbow by standing still and being in it's path I guess. Talk about a **** call. Hopefully it's more precautionary than anything, the team needs Rudy... uh I mean Scal.

Bad timing for scal, he has looked good recently and more importantly confident.

TA is near his return but apparently isnt in very good shape so hopefully Walker gets some more burn, and maybe Leon can get some extended minutes to get back into some form

http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/01/26/athlete.brains/ is the latest in the series of articles about the disastrous effects of concussions on football players, with a little more detail than other articles in the past.

Well if ever there was a chance for Leon to come in and get into a groove, this is it.

There's a similar article in the NY Times as well. In the meantime, the NFL continues to minimize and/or deny the results of these studies....

It's not like it's as much as a contact sport as football; I doubt that he'll be kept out too long as a precaution.

They can't mess around with this, doesn't matter if it's not football. Scal takes one elbow at the wrong time and his career is over. They are not going to mess with a man's physical wellbeing.

we have the kings, detroit, and wolves coming up.. .all with a days break in between, plus the day off today... give him the week off, only 3 games we have to deal with, then re-assess.

As sunshinekids said, its not something you wanna play around with, make sure the guy is right.. we dont need to rush him back or anything, its probably a good chance for walker and powe more than anything
