Eastern all star reserves-Make your pick!

Post#1 » by klemen4 » Wed Jan 28, 2009 1:49 am

Who are your 7 eastern allstar reserves:

2 guards
2 forwards
1 center
2 wild card

My pick:

GUARD:
Jamer Nelson
Joe Johnson

FORWARD:
Paul Pierce
Chris Bosh

CENTER:
Emeka Okafur

WILD CARD:
Ray Allen
Danny Granger

As the Coaches picks, I think it is safe to say they will pick the following players:
Johnson, Pierce, Bosh...for other 4 spots it is all open.

Choices:

GUARD Nelson, Harris, M. Williams, Allen

FORWARD Granger, Lewis, Turkoglu, Carter, Prince

C There is no one out there, but Bosh could take this C place by coaches. Lee could be a surprise.

Looking the fact that Boston, Cleveland and Orlando are above everyone I could see 2 players from each team in allstar Garnet/Pierce, Howard/Nelson, James/Williams.

Lets see.

I think Vince deserves a spot.. i also think the coaches are able to vote bosh in as the center

Johnson/Carter/Allen/Nelson
Pierce/Granger
Bosh

Small line up, guards as wild cards.. Nelson could easily be replaced by quite a few guys though

You realize Toronto is 10 games under .500, right? And that's after they've just won 2 straight.

Thanks, Lucerne.

Without changing my criteria,
I grant a special exemption to Chris Bosh to get another "Big" Front Court Player
(even though I have Rashard Lewis as a wild card).

For any moaners over Jameer Nelson or Devin Harris,
I'll play Paul Pierce or Ray Allen at point guard
before I give a spot to Jameer or Devin.

And I have Rondo as a wild card, so between
Rondo, Pierce and Ray,
the team has a real point guard
(Iverson can take a seat after the opening tip).

That would be funny if Iverson were to be traded back to the western conference before All-Star weekend or prior to the thirtieth of February.

My feeling is that the eastern conference head coaches will choose these players as reserves.

Bosh F, Pierce F, Okafor C, Joe Johnson G, Harris G, Granger F and Iguodala F/G.

Coach Doc Rivers is hoping four Celtics will be named to the team and strongly believes there will be three. Forward Kevin Garnett was voted a starter, and forward Paul Pierce is expected to be a shoo-in. Allen and Rondo have tentative vacation plans, just in case. The NBA will announce the reserves tomorrow at 7 p.m. on TNT. The All-Star Game is Feb. 15.

"Every year during the All-Star break, I make contingency plans for the All-Star Game or going on vacation," said Allen, who will have his wife and children with him. "Our travel agency has us scheduled to go where we need to go. Vacation-wise, we pick a couple spots and we go from there. Right now we're thinking somewhere in Mexico because we will be finishing up in Dallas [the Celtics' last game before the break].

"We either go to Phoenix or somewhere in Mexico. Either way, it's going to be about the same amount of time flight-wise. But I don't want to be stuck out there without a plan."

Said Rondo, "I kind of have other plans already. I'm either going to Puerto Rico or Grand Cayman. The travel agent is on deck."

Rivers could make a sound argument why the Celtics merit four All-Stars. The defending champions have the most wins (37) in the NBA and have won eight straight. Pierce is averaging a team-best 19.1 points. The sharpshooting Allen is averaging 18.1 points on 50.4 percent shooting, 41.6 percent from 3-point range, and is hitting 93.6 percent of his free throws. Rondo is playing a solid all-around game, averaging 10.9 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds, and 2.2 steals.

There have been four All-Stars from one team on seven occasions, the last by the Pistons in 2006. The Celtics had four in 1953, 1962, and 1975, but in each case, the fourth player was an injury replacement.

"I'm hoping I get three," Rivers said. "But you never know in our league. If we don't get three, then that will be a shame. And I think we should get four. But if we don't get three, then I will be shocked."

Of the four candidates, Rondo acknowledged he is probably the least likely to be selected.

"I would be shocked," Rondo said. "I'd be excited, but I would be shocked. I'm No. 4, definitely. Hopefully, we get those three guys in. They deserve it."

Allen pointed out it's not a given the Celtics will get three. Although Garnett, Pierce, and Allen were All-Stars last season, Allen was an injury replacement. Allen, however, is playing better now than he did last season, when he was hampered by two surgically repaired ankles. "They didn't give us three last year," Allen said. "I was considered after the fact due to injury. It wasn't a given then. You don't know now."

Likely reserve candidates at forward include Toronto's Chris Bosh, Indiana's Danny Granger, New Jersey's Vince Carter, and Orlando's Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu. Likely guard candidates include Atlanta's Mike Bibby and Joe Johnson, Cleveland's Mo Williams, Orlando's Jameer Nelson, New Jersey's Devin Harris, and Toronto's Jose Calderon. Aside from Orlando starter Dwight Howard, the center position lacks star power. It's possible another forward could be selected instead of a backup center.

The Celtics had 4 All-Stars in the 1967 All-Star Game.

Center Bill Russell (12 Time All-Star)
Power Forward Bailey Howell (6 Time All-Star)
Small Forward John Havlicek (13 Time All-Star)
Shooting Guard Sam Jones (5 Time All-Star)

These are pretty much my picks as well. I could change Harris to Nelson or Rondo though.

Harris has to be considered over Nelson and Rondo. He's a much more important player on his team. NJ's roster is awful, the fact that they're competitive is a credit to him.

C- Bosh
F- Pierce
F- Johnson (He's the best player on the Hawks, who have a better record and team than the Pacers. He's also a better playmaker than Granger is at this point, and frankly scares me in the playoffs more.)
G- Harris
G- R. Allen (18 ppg on the best team in the league.. and on some nights their best player. Nelson wouldn't be as productive if he were on the celts. he wouldn't even start over rondo. Hamilton is a good player, but not as good as Allen).
F- Carter (his numbers are great, he's quietly having his best season in a while. 44% from the field, 40% from 3, 21ppg, 5 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal... i think that today, he's still a scarier player than granger... and on a better team).
F- Granger

off the bench, Granger can play the 4 and bosh the 5 obviously. Also, Lebron can slide to the 4 and KG to the 5 if need be.

With the debates I've heard elsewhere over MoWill/Nelson/Harris vs. Rondo, it's pretty clear that basketball understanding in general hasn't evolved much beyond "Oooh, look at that guy score POINTS...by himself!"

Absolutely true. The number of people who do not understand the primary role of the point guard position (or of the value of defense) is sadly very high.

The choice for Maurice Williams surprises if not puzzles me. First the "choice" was Harris, then Nelson and now Williams. Interestingly, Rondo's averaging more rebounds, assists and steals than all three of them. But, this is a league where you're judged more on the number of points you score/average than your other statistics. I mean these point guards are nothing more than scoring guards like Arenas or Terry or House.

I chose Harris as the reserve point guard chosen by the eastern conference head coaches since he was the consensus choice at one point and likely still is. He's still leading all starting point guards in the east in scoring.
