Madden NFL 08 Review
by YVG Staff

Overall Score: 5 out of 5
(Xbox 360 version)

Pros:

* Smooth and responsive gameplay
* Great visuals
* Addictive Superstar mode

Cons:

* Lame radio announcer
* Still lacking online leagues

Football fans, your wives and girlfriends are about to hate you. Such is the engrossing quality of Madden NFL 08. While you took your team to its third consecutive Super Bowl in Franchise mode and played through a season of Superstar as Calvin Johnson, dinner got cold and your relationship is in shambles. The only thing you could do worse to your woman than buy Madden 08 would be to hire Najeh Davenport to hide in her closet.

But that's just love, right?

Right. Because with Madden 08, EA Sports finally got it right. Players move how you want them to move, teams mimic their real-life tendencies, the view from the gridiron is gorgeous, and playing with a friends is simply addicting. While the game does have some minor hiccups, Madden 08 is without a doubt the best football game to be released in several years and is a must-have for any red-blooded football fan.

It was hard to say just what made Madden so ho-hum the last few years, but the sluggish controls and unremarkable AI made the game about as exciting as a staring contest with Art Shell. In Madden 08, the controls are tighter and more responsive than ever. As a result, the game is fast, twitchy fast, but it's also smart enough that a guy like Michael Vick won't be able to scramble 62 yards in the backfield before throwing a dart to the end zone.

This new level of control is based mostly upon a slick branching animation system. Let's say you take a toss to the left with all-world tailback LaDainian Tomlinson. After following your fullback and a pulling guard, you burst into the second level to find a strong safety charging at your face. With a tap of the highlight stick, you throw a juke that leaves him hugging air, only to be met by a linebacker. You throw a quick spin move but he catches you in the act, wraps you up and is about to drive you into the ground when -- WHAM -- the free safety dives in to finish the play but misses LT and hits his teammate instead.

Suddenly you are on your way again, ready to stiff-arm, hurdle and high step to the pylon. Everything from manually catching bombs with a receiver to de-cleating ballcarriers using the hit stick feels like you controlled it, not like an animation. In short, the days of canned auto-play are gone. You could see something new and exciting with every play thanks to the infinite possibilities of these branching animations. Gang tackles, mid-air collisions, leaping over the goal line on a simple dive -- this is next-generation football.

It also just so happens that these animations are gorgeous to look at, from Reggie Bush doing his trademark summersault for six, or a Chad Johnson river dance after a score. This is because the game runs at a buttery smooth 60 frames per second. So when Peyton Manning annoyingly calls three audibles and a hot route at the line of scrimmage, it never looked so good.

It even sounds good -- EA recorded many of the voices of real NFL quarterbacks like Manning and Tom Brady. You can almost make out Jeff Garcia's lisp. One of the low points of Madden, however, is the radio announcer, a generic play-by-play man that would be better suited to hosting infomercials than professional football games.

But football is really all about the players, and that's clearly where EA puts its major focus in 08. New this season are weapon categories in which stars are broken up by their abilities, be it brick wall defenders like Ray Lewis or Smart QBs like Brady. These weapons will have access to special abilities too -- smart players can see an opponent's play art about once a game, while Spectacular Catch receivers can make amazing grabs no one else can. The goal here is to make NFL stars play like stars and to exploit matchups, and in this, EA succeeded -- a great touch, overall.

Off the field, you can jump right into quick games with your buddies as well as the standard franchise mode, this time with up to 32 teams, ideal for a fraternity house full of football fans. Unfortunately, multiplayer franchise is limited to offline-only as EA has yet to match the online leagues of 2K Sports. Still, you do have the option to create players and a custom team, building a stadium from the bleachers up.

Probably the most enjoyable single-player mode is Superstar, a breath of fresh air from traditional 11-on-11 football. You take control of a created player or a rookie like Adrian Peterson and play as that player his entire career, from the NFL combine, to agent signing, to practice, to Canton. If you already created an All American in NCAA Football 08, you can import him too.

Online, the ESPN partnership is in full effect with downloadable video highlights and segments from ESPN radio. Then again, we would trade all of that in for online leagues because most of us already have, you know, cable TV and radios.

In the end, Madden 08 is simply superb. If you could only own one next-gen football, this is it. That is, unless the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader sim finally comes out. Maybe your girlfriend will get behind that one. Then again, maybe not.

:bowdown: looks like madden is a must buy this year. :clap:

maybe you should start thinking about it. both the PS3 and Xbox 360 are cutting their prices. if you're getting a xbox 360, you can buy it now. don't buy the core, buy the premium or the elite. even the premiums now have HDMI built in.

Yeah, if you haven't gone next gen, now is probably the time, all the major titles are on there way.

I'm really hyped for this Madden.

well, xbox 360 version runs in 60 fps and the PS3 version only runs in 30 fps. this is the same with NCAA football 08. if you're a madden freak and only plays madden, then xbox 360 is the better choice. plus, ps3 controller has no rumble... i played it on ps3 once and it feels weird...

plus, new xbox 360 has HDMI built in and $50 price cut.

Reviews: Madden NFL 08 (1up.com review)
Johnny's back at the top of his game.

Score: 9/10 (Xbox 360 version)
Score: 8.5/10 (PS3 version)
Score: TBA (Wii Version)

Back in the February 2007 issue of EGM (#212), this sporto wrote an article titled "The best Madden ever (...if we have anything to say about it)." Let's be honest: Since EA secured the exclusive National Football League license a few years back, Mr. Madden's ballgame hasn't exactly performed at a Super Bowl-caliber level (especially on the new consoles). Does 08 finally deliver both on and off the field? Let's run through the wish list. Stop experimenting and start innovating: Vision and Precision Passing, Superstar mode -- the last two big features coming out of this series can best be described as "great in theory, poor in execution." Thankfully, that's not the case this season as 08 introduces something much simpler yet way more effective. The new "weapons" feature has a two-pronged effect. First, these onfield icons make it supereasy to identify a team's key players and their strengths. And more importantly, these classifications bring some much-needed variety to each position. So running the pigskin with elusive Saints running back Reggie Bush feels way different than using Chiefs power back Larry Johnson. The game even takes into account which NFL players show some smarts on the gridiron. Brainiacs like the Colts' Peyton Manning and the Ravens' Ed Reed (who receive the lightbulb icon) can eventually fill up that lightbulb and read the defensive or offensive play, which will appear on the field as a diagram. Now that's what we call innovation.

Aside from these player classifications, the developers went back and cleaned up some of their previous "experiments." Superstar mode returns, but this time the position-specific camera angles are actually playable -- the view's been pulled back, which allows you to see more of the action. Also, rather than creating a superstar, you can also play this mode with one of the league's top rookies. The game's franchise mode takes another step forward with its scouting options, and for all you Xbox 360 owners, you've never played a Madden that moves as blistering fast and smooth as this one. That's what 60 frames per second can do for football (see the sidebar for the unfortunate PS3 difference).

Give 'em something upstairs: From the terrible secondary play to the errant line blocking, we've often wondered why Madden's group of NFLers even wear helmets -- it's not like they got much to protect up there. But just like our innovation wish, you'll find a much smarter brand of football in 08: Quarterbacks now scramble when no one is open, wideouts continue to make blocks 30 yards downfield, and defensive backs rarely fall for the deep ball. Some might even say that pass defense is a tad too stingy this season, but we'd rather have it be challenging than face another Madden secondary that sports more holes than Swiss cheese.

This year's game makes the developers look wise in other ways as well. Ball carriers will now push on the back of an offensive lineman if the fatty is pluggin' up the hole. If you call a play-action pass at the goal line, you'll actually see the running back continue with the fake and jump over the pile -- very nice. Surprisingly, 08 also isn't afraid to make its players look dumb (at the appropriate times, naturally). For example, bad weather finally has an effect on gameplay as players will occasionally slip on a rain-soaked or snow-covered field while juking or going for a tackle.

Show some emotion: When you boot up the game, it starts with a video montage that shows Eagles hit man Brian Dawkins pounding his chest and screaming to his teammates, "Can you feel it?!" Well, Brian, not entirely in 08. While we really dig that the players display more personality in this year's edition (usually through celebrations like Giants defensive end Michael Strahan's sack-tastic jump shot and Cowboys wideout Terrell Owens' TD shimmy), we're still waiting for the sport's true emotion to come out. As this writer mentioned in the EGM article, "If we're playing in the Super Bowl -- from the announcers to the fans in the stands -- it better damn well feel like a special event." Bumping up the player's reactions to what's happening on the field is a start, but this series -- along with most other sports sims -- desperately needs to turn up the atmosphere dial.

Online leagues or bust: Another year, another Madden -- and another year without online leagues. Disappointing? Heck yeah, especially with the recent announcement that NHL 08, another EA sports franchise with an online community a fraction of the size of Madden, will receive this most-wanted feature. But perhaps calling this wish "online leagues or bust" was a li'l dramatic. Playing four quarters across the Internet was pretty much lag-free, and die-hard football fans should enjoy the "NFL News" tab that gives you access to tons of news articles and ESPN clips.

Stop putting players on the cover: Some initially read this wish as a joke, but we're not kidding: When will EA realize that putting stars like Titans quarterback Vince Young on the Madden cover messes up not only fantasy football, but more importantly, the actual NFL? We feel for ya, Titans fans -- it's going to be one long (and soon-to-be Young-less) season.

So as we wrap up, is this the "best Madden ever?" Well, EA's still gotta get its online act together before we can bestow such an honor. But we definitely do feel bad for folks like Pacman Jones and Tank Johnson -- these guys won't be part of the best Madden in a long while.

The PS3 difference.
Sadly, just like with NCAA Football 08 and All-Pro Football 2K8, PS3 owners are stuck with an inferior version of Madden. While the game runs at 60 frames per second on Microsoft's box, Madden only clocks in at 30fps on Sony's console. The result? The gameplay isn't nearly as smooth as the 360 version and even stutters at times (see the difference in this comparison video). And that's the reason why we're scoring the PS3 edition slightly lower.

Even though the 360's are a piece of trash when it comes to hardware failures, Sony got nothing on its graphics. I'd love the 360 if I didn't get the red ring of death on two different consoles already.

Still, I'm not complaining, I'll be the first in line to get this new Madden and play it on my 52" HD.

Why would you be happy that the PS3 version only runs at 30 fps?
