ASSET No. 1: New York's future first-round pick (unprotected in 2010)
OWNER: Utah Jazz
The summer of LeBron will begin on July 1, 2010, and the Knicks will be knocking on his door at 12:01 a.m. that morning. But seven nights before the arrival of Jimmy Dolan's limo in Akron, Knicks fans are going to be reminded once again how ruinous the previous decade had been, because back on a cold January night in 2004, this lottery pick slid away.
FYI, Knicks and Jazz fans: ESPN.com NBA draft expert Chad Ford tells me he has Raleigh (N.C.) high school point guard John Wall -- "a Derrick Rose clone" -- ranked as his No. 1 prospect for the 2010 draft, unless Ricky Rubio waits until then.
What do people here think, trade the pick or keep it. Will the jazz wait or try and get something for it now.

What are we gonna get for it? Probably not much. Unless the combination of that pick and Boozer lands us a Chris Bosh or Amare we might as well keep it, hope NY sucks and pray we land a star.

Re: Top Trade Assets
Honestly, you don't get many unprotected lottery picks with a good chance of being a top 10 pick as a perennial playoff team. If the Jazz want to make trades, they have plenty of players to make trades with.
Just hold on to this pick and take it for a ride, and definitely don't trade it before you find out where the pick is going to be.
You just never know with it being a possible top 10 pick, and if the Jazz some how lucked into getting one of the top 3 picks with the lottery system you can really change the future of your team.
And if it doesn't turn into a top 3 pick, but is still a top 15 pick, those still have a lot of value. There are always teams looking for high draft picks.

if our only option is a PG, I really think we'll trade it away. If there is another player on the board that we can use we'll probably take em, but if Rubio or that other PG are there for that pick it'll be hard for us not to select them (and trade away).
Bye Bye Sloan, Good Riddance Deron. Hello new Era in Jazz Basketball.

I don't think we CAN trade the pick, whether we want to or not. Minnesota might get it if certain conditions are met...how can we possibly trade the pick before we know if it belongs to Minnesota?
If there's a rule or condition that gets us around that, I haven't heard of it.

If the pick is in the lottery there is honestly no chance the Jazz have of trade it for a good long while. The Knicks and Jazz would both have to be in the top 8 for the Jazz to trade it at the end of the season and there is almost no chance of that happening in the next 2 years.

Wait... WTF are you talking about? I know that you're a knowledgeable poster, so you've got me concerned.
We owe a pick to Philly, but what the hell does Minny have to do with anything?
Obviously I have been left out of the loop this year, but I can't imagine how Minny has any claim to our NY pick. I'm getting sick to my stomach as I ask you to enlighten me. Please.

That NY pick has been talked about for years, and many dipwads( no offense) wanted to dump it for a late first.
Praise Jebus Jazz management wasn't as foolish as most fans.

2009 first round draft pick to Minnesota
Utah's own 2009 1st round pick to Minnesota via Philadelphia (top 22 protected in the 2009 Draft, top 15 protected in 2010, top 17 protected in 2011, top 16 protected in 2012, and top 16 protected in the 2013 Draft). However, if: (i) Utah's own 2009 first round draft is not protected, and (ii) Utah is entitled to receive New York’s own 2009 first round draft pick, then Utah shall convey to Minnesota via Philadelphia the more favorable of its own 2009 first round draft pick and New York’s 2009 first round draft pick. Further, if: (x) Utah did not satisfy its obligations to Philadelphia in 2009 and (y) if Utah's own 2010 first round draft is not protected, and (z) if Utah is entitled to receive New York’s own 2010 first round draft pick, then Utah shall convey to Minnesota via Philadelphia the least favorable of its own 2010 first round draft pick and New York’s 2010 first round draft pick. If Minnesota via Philadelphia does not receive a first round draft pick from Utah pursuant to the foregoing in any of the Drafts from 2009 through 2013, then Utah’s obligation to send a first round draft pick to Minnesota via Philadelphia shall be extinguished and Utah shall instead convey to Minnesota via Philadelphia Utah’s own 2014 second round draft pick and pay to Philadelphia cash. [Philadelphia - Utah, 12/29/2007 and then Minnesota - Philadelphia, 7/9/2008]
If you can write a trade with all those stipulations, why couldn't you trade your 2014 pick with the big HOWEVER:
and make the NY pick an option (instead of 2014 pick), if available?
The only way MIN gets the NY pick in 2009 is if the Jazz and NY finish in the top eight spots in the league. Last time I checked, we couldn't break the top eight in the west, let alone the NBA. Ditto for NY. I would call that a pretty safe gamble. True?

Gamble? Yes. But probability is irrelevant. Until it's known FOR SURE where that pick is going to be, and that Minny doesn't get it, then we can't trade it. I doubt we'll be mathematically eliminated from the top 8 by the trade deadline. Even I'm not THAT big a pessimist

Philadelphia sent the rights to that pick, along with Calvin Booth and Rodney Carney, to Minnesota last summer in exchange for nothing (i.e. capspace).

yeah, don't sweat it, freak. Philly just traded the pick to Minny. No biggie.
As for trades, there is a rule in the NBA that no team can trade its 1st rounder for two consecutive years. That's why we couldn't trade it...maybe. At least that is what would prevent us from doing so.

Okay. Finally, I get it.
Thanks.

I think that if there is a chance that you can get a player like Chris Bosh, you offer them the Knicks pick and any combo of 2 or 3 players that are not named Deron Williams they want.
Would Toronto do a Boozer, Brewer, NY 2010 pick, future Jazz 1st for Bosh?
