Wiz financial situation?

Post#1 » by tester551 » Sat Jan 31, 2009 9:14 am

Just a quick question for you all.

Can anyone tell me how badly the Wiz ownership have been hit with the current economic conditions? Do they have a LOT of cash, or are they hurting?

The reason I ask, is that the Blazer's beat writer said on a pod-cast that the Blazers have a potential deal with an eastern confrence team to adress our two biggest issues (PG & SF). In looking at the teams salaries for this year and next, the Wizards have one of the highest payrolls in the east (along with Milwaulkie).

What do you think the probability is that the owners tell your GM to blow it up and start over?

I looked at a few possible trades, but I can't seem to come up with anything that makes sense.

They're in a much bigger market than Milwaukee, and they're fine. But like Milwaukee, they're going to be right up against the lux tax next season - so they want to do things to avoid it. If Portly is trying to get a PG and SF from an eastern team, it could very well be Milwaukee - Sessions and Jefferson. Sessions is going to be an RFA next offseason (as is Villa), and the Bucks can't afford to re-sign him - so he's more than likely available. And because Redd is out for the year - and their 1st round pick plays Jefferson's position - Jefferson and his burdensome contract are available.

The Wiz don't have a PG that Portly would be interested in. They might make a big move, but I don't see them blowing things up.

DC is not like any other market, for example we have:

1. Fortune 1 aka the US Government HQ in DC
2. Strong military presence.
3. Commercial market just like the rest of the US, Fairfax County is a top three county in the US for income.
4. Foreign service / Foreign government / international education.
5. Tourism.
6. 6th largest media market in the US.

So when one sector slows others can help, but yes it's slowed down

Nice analysis, Ruz, That would actually seem to make sense for both teams. Portland could trade LaFrentz plus either one of their young players or a pick for RJ/Sessions. The Blazers get even stronger and Milwaukee clears cap.

If that went down, I would imagine Redd would be gone whenever he's healthy again.

Gilbert & Butler were the ones who Portland would want, but I know they are "untouchable".... unless the Wiz blow it up.

I know it's a 95% chance the rumored trade is with the Bucks, but honestly it doesn't do anything for me. I was hoping for a bigger splash.

Thanks for the info. Good luck on tanking it the rest of the year.
