Head Coach Lionel Hollins
On the loss
To be a good team, you have to close quarters no matter who is on the court. That’s why you have 12 guys. We didn’t get it done; they made some big-time shots and got a couple of threes. We have to play without fouling. It did play a part in us losing an 11-point lead going into the locker room with a five- or six-point lead at that time.
On the lack of offensive execution in the third quarter
“The Lakers stepped their defensive intensity. We were a little tired. We quit thinking and executing. That’s what the good teams do – they turn on the defensive intensity – and in order to play in a playoff game, you have to face this intensity. You still have to execute and have to do what you’re supposed to do. This is another learning experience for our team.”
On the Lakers’ points off turnovers
Some of it was missed assignments. When you let someone cut behind you and get a layup, that’s a missed assignment. The other thing was we have very little size after the starting center. So that hurt us, and they were pounding the ball inside.
They got deflated. (The Lakers) made some tough shots. They started making threes, and their defensive pressure is something they could’ve affected them emotionally. And made them get back on their heels because throughout the game we were able to run our stuff and execute. We put pressure on them because we got stops and were able to get out and run. We were attacking them. We had 16 fast break points. That was huge. We were able to get the ball up in a hurry no matter what. As the game went on, our energy level went down. We weren’t able to be consistent as the game wore on.
On the value of each possession
I don’t know if they see it. To win a game, you have to play with great energy, good defense, rebound and execute and also have poise and toughness. The other team is going to make runs and do things, so you have to have all those things to win. Part of that poise is valuing the ball and getting good shoots every time down the court. You can’t have 4-out-of-6 possessions were you don’t get a good shot.
On O.J. Mayo
O.J. was guarded by one of the best players in the game. As I told O.J. when he came out of the game, this guy (Kobe Bryant) is defending you because he knows you are going to be the up-and-coming. He’s trying to show you you’re not there yet. That’s why you have to have pride in your defense and attack him the same way.
Mike Conley
On the loss
The Lakers stepped up defensively. They picked up full court and really pressured us in turnovers and made us make big mistakes. That was a tough stretch for us. We just couldn’t come back from it. I think a lot of it was just getting a little out of sync. A lot of it was about getting calls and being able to relay calls to people. We just didn’t execute them.
Marc Gasol
On the loss
We just need to get in better shape and keep working on it. We’ve got to be consistent. We have to play strong for 48 minutes. In the first half they were kind of shocked because Andrew (Bynum) went down. In the second half they just got stronger and executed better than us.
On second match-up with brother Pau
They won again. There was no difference and everything else doesn’t matter.
Darrell Arthur
On the second half
I thought the second half was not as strong an effort as the first half. They got their hands on most of the rebounds. We didn’t come out as aggressive like we should have in the third quarter. Their defense turned up
