Trade Deadline Thread

Post#1 » by TrentTuckerForever » Sun Feb 1, 2009 6:25 pm

Thought it might be nice to have one spot to discuss deadline items that might effect the Wolves.

Chad Ford posted a few interesting "on the block" articles -

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/s ... igs-090129

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/s ... ngs-090128

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/s ... hPG-090127

Ford's stuff is spotty (he's no predictor of the future) but he is plugged in. More than anything else, the Woofies could use a defensive big (center would be ideal) and a starting point guard (moving Telfair's go-go game to the bench with Love, Miller and Carney.) Address both those needs without changing the core of Jefferson, Foye, Love and Gomes, and this is a playoff team.

So looking at these lists, anyone interest you guys? I like Kirk Hinrich and Mike Conley off the PG list, and David Lee and Sam Dalembert as bigs. John Salmons isn't a point guard, but he may be a good enough ball-handler to use as a starter next to Foye (not sure.) I think it's going to be an interesting deadline, lots of reasons for teams to move pieces around...

we need to do something. quantity for quality.

Would an expiring contract be enough for Mike Miller?

I like Salmons a lot. We need someone that can create their own shot on the perimeter.

I would much rather go after Garica.

He never really stood out to me. Maybe it's because Salmons destroys us every time we play Sac. Just looking at numbers so I don't see why you would want Garcia over him besides age maybe?

Of course numbers never tell the whole story though.

I really like that Garica can defend 1-3. Salmons seems like a weirdo and as Devilz says they don't win championships. He backed out of a deal with the Raptors and now he isn't getting along with the Kings staff.

Salmons is not known as a good teammate. No thanks.

^^exactly.

We need more than simply an expiring for Miller. Some people think an expiring will work for Miller+cardinal, but notice the "+cardinal" aspect.

Trade Deadline is February 19th.

ESPN's Chris Sheridan listed 12 Top "Non-Player" assets:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/s ... ets-090130

Chris Sheridan wrote: ASSET No. 7: Three future first-round picks (Miami's and Boston's in 2009, Utah's in 2010)
OWNER: Minnesota Timberwolves

The Heat's pick is protected 1-10, but they look like a playoff team right now, so the Timberwolves will own this one on June 25. Boston's pick went to Minny in the Kevin Garnett deal, and figures to be 26th-30th, and Utah has been in the lottery just three times in the past 25 years, and if they miss the playoffs this year the pick is still not likely to be a high one, so none of these picks by itself is all that valuable.

But like the Thunder, the Wolves will explore packaging one or both of them with an expendable part (Mike Miller, anyone?) if it gets them a second lottery pick (assuming they remain in the bottom third of the league, which will keep their own pick protected from the Clippers).

No. Wolves have shed their bad contracts from a year ago (Blount, Walker, Hassell, James) and are looking to add, not just subtract.

Think we could entice the Grizz to give us Conley for McCants and a future first? I think Conley would be a nice fit long term. The Grizz want to move Mayo to the point, right?

I would love to take a flyer on him. I think Conley needs a proper coach, but he is better than Jennings as a pg prospect and I believe he is only 21. Could we do shad+the Uta or Bos pick? I think Memphis would want much more.

No. You either have to take Cardinal too (i.e. for Sczerbiak), or give an expiring + a future asset (mid-first pick or young player).

Probably. Conley's starting now, averaging over 30 mpg, 12 ppg, 5 assists over his last five (althought they were all losses.) Looks like a building block... I think he's certainly better than Lowry, but with two high drafts picks at the same position with the same team, you never really know who the guy they value more is.

I've read elsewhere that the Grizz want the ball in Mayo's hands as a shoot-first point; McCants fits next to Mayo if that's their plan.

Carney played in Memphis, I bet he would be part of a deal.

I don't think the Grizzlies would be that interested in McCants. Mayo and Gay provide enough scoring, they could use more hustle guys like Ross. Like Rev said Carney played in Memphis, he also would be a nice fit with Mayo/Gay. Him playing college ball in Memphis would be nice for the small market team. Like Mason in OKC or Miller here, once he gets his shot back.

I think the Grizzlies will TRY to make Mayo a PG next season. I am not sure there is a fit for our teams. A lot of Memphis fans would love Miller back :). Conley/Buckner for Miller? I am not a Miller fan though.

Chad Ford wrote:The Grizzlies would like to move Mayo to the 1 or at the very least get another guard who can stroke the basketball. They turned down a Blazers offer of Travis Outlaw for Conley this past summer and have generally been looking for more. I'm not sure they'll be able to get it.

I was thinking something like this:

MEM GETS: Martell Webster + Utah 1st + Boston 1st
POR GETS: Mike Miller
MIN GETS: Mike Conley + Ike Diogu + Channing Frye

http://www.realgm.com/src_checktrade.ph ... id=4963303

We would have to cut Boothe and get rid of either McCants or Ollie to make the trade work, but I don't think that such a big deal.

That would be the easiest YES! ever for me, but then again I'm a big Conley fan.
