Nikola Pekovic Interview

Post#1 » by tvwolves7 » Tue Feb 3, 2009 12:35 am

Hi everyone,

Here is an interview that Nikola did recently and was asked about the NBA/Timberwolves.

Not the best response, but I do not think its something we should really be concerned about either. If my understanding of second round picks we can sign him to any amount, correct? I know that we will not want to overpay him to get him over here but I assume we will have to get close or pay over what he will in a euroleague.

Why did he declare for the draft? He doesn't sound to interested in coming to the NBA.

This year you were drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the first pick of the second round. What do you think about getting drafted and what did the management at Minnesota tell you about your future with the team?

“I don’t think now about NBA. It’s something I tell to everybody. I really don’t like to speak about it. There is no pressure from their side. They tell me “come in two years”. I don’t know what will happen in two years. I am such a kind of player. Even when I signed for Panathinaikos they were asking me about it and I was giving the same answer. “I don’t know. Let’s get there first”. I am very happy in Panathinaikos right now and I don’t think about the NBA”.

His comments aren't bad at all.
He's simply worrying about today and letting tomorrow take care of itself.

He also sounds very passionate about winning. Interesting read.

I dunno... is that the same Saras Jasikevicius who played for the Warriors a couple of years ago? And Vassilis Spanoulis washed out with the Rockets, I believe. Pekovic doesn't sound like he's surrounded by NBA success stories over there.

Provided we have the cap space. I think there is a league min. we can sign him to and then he's a UFA. Or if we have cap space, we can sign him to a more lucrative contract so long as we don't go over the cap.

EDIT: On second thought, there has to be a max we can sign him to. Because I think it would be unfair if he earned more than first rounders. It would be screwed up if he made more than the #1 pick.

At a certain age you become automatically eligible for the draft, I believe.

+1
Sounds to me like the Wolves told him not to worry about the NBA for two years so he isn't worrying about the NBA. I think Peks might turn out to be a great pick. He should come over about when we will likely lose our pick to the Clippers so he will be, in essence, our 2010 pick.

Pekovic was considered a much better prospect than Jordan. Considered a mid-late lotto prospect if not for the contract.

We should have grabbed Jordan with the Chalmers pick. That was a stupid trade.
