Perkins vs Horford

Post#1 » by tontoz » Tue Feb 3, 2009 7:32 pm

I am curious about your take on these two. Someone on the Hawks board said Boston would jump at the chance to trade Perkins for Horford. I doubted this because Perkins plays a valuable role on your team and Horford struggles to guard big post players. What say you?

I would take Horford over Perk in a second...I love his competitiveness and he is still young and developing...He would also be nice in a fast paced offense bc of how well he runs the floor...Also, his offensive game is so much better than Perks...Another things that scares me about Perk is that shoulder. It may end up being career ending...he has been battling problems with that should since high school.

i love Perk but Horford is SOOO much better that this really isn't close. We lose on D, but we more than make it up in many other ways.

If Horford got the looks Perk gets he'd be averaging 15+, just like Kevin, Paul & Ray.

There's a chance that Horford doesn't fit in as well as Perkins does on the team atm, but for future season I'd definitely rather have Horford. Perkins just doesn't have the same offensive gifts or explosiveness that Horford does. Perk will forever be a good role player, but Horford may one day be an all star or at least a great 2nd or 3rd option on offense.

I don't know if Danny jumps at the trade offer though. Perk is locked up in a very very nice deal, and Horford will probably look for a big pay day after the rookie contract expires. In my mind, Horford is still a natural power forward and not a center, so he doesn't fit in with KG as well as Perkins defensively. Looking towards the post big-3 future, PF is a position we'll need to fill, but I don't know if Danny would deal the opportunity now for the future opportunity on a title contending team.

Really tough call. In the end the question becomes who's more valuable against Dwight, Yao, Gasol, Z and Bynum and I'm not sure that Horford is that guy. I mean as an individual there's no question Horford is the guy, especially offensively, but I'm just not sure he fits alongside KG quite as well as Perkins does. Perkins is a slightly better defender against centers IMO and that's really important when KG really doesn't like to mix it up with centers all too often.

That is the problem with Horford too. He doesn't have much offense. People keep using the excuse that playing at the 4 is hurting his offense but it sure didn't hurt the offense of Bosh and Amare. A scorer is going to score.

Smith was out for 12 games with an ankle sprain earlier in the season. During that time Horford scored double figures only half the time.

Looks like there is still a big gap between perception and reality as far as Horford is concerned.

With the Celtics though, I believe that Horford's greater mobility, leap, and setshot would garner him lots of easy looks. In terms of post offense and creating shots I actually believe Perk to be better, which he plainly displays in one on one matchups with Horford but bottling up his post offense and scoring over him in the deep block by sheer force and length.

Sadly, I see Horford's durability as a big plus over Perk.

I don't believe that Horford fits with KG. If we didn't have KG, I'd say yes, I'd trade Perk for him, but not with KG on the team. Horford is a PF playing center. KG needs to play with a real defensive minded center, not another PF that can't defend centers well.

Perk is the big bodied space eating C who works well with KG. Horford is a bit similar to the tall, long players that KG played with in Minni, which didn't mesh as well.

For the next two to three years, I'd keep Perks. After that it would be a question as to progression.

Defense wins championships, and as this team is built Perkin's is a better cog than horford would be. Like Cisco and 3pt% said, Perk is more complimentary to KG. Overall, Horford is a better talent and more athletic, and will have a much better career statistically but the value of a guy who can body up against the leagues best post players and defend them one on one can't be over-stated.

That's key I think. Otherwise we're just fine with having Perk as he gets only 4 million/year and bangs with the big guys while KG holds our complete defensive system together.

Horford would be an upgrade but he will get a lot of money and he might be a worse defender (man to man, p&r).
