Tinsley to Orlando

Post#1 » by cdash » Wed Feb 4, 2009 11:44 pm

Surprise! More Tinsley threads! I saw this in a Chad Ford column today:

1. Pacers trade Jamaal Tinsley for Brian Cook and Keith Bogans
If what the Pacers and Tinsley's agent are saying is true, Tinsley is totally healthy and in shape. Of course, the two years and $14.7 million left on Tinsley's contract would make even the richest teams gag, especially when you look at his injury history. And given Smith's desire not to infect his locker room with players with character issues, the Magic might not be able to pull the trigger on a Tinsley trade.

Sign me up! Somehow I doubt this happens, but we can dream.

I wouldn't mind it. Bogans is a lot better than Graham and he can defend so I wouldn't mind having him, and Cook can play spot minutes to spread the floor if Murphy isn't on the court and we need a big body that can shoot. Sign me up as well.

Why did the Magic decide to stop playing Bogans? I heard he was a poor decision-maker, but at least most of his bad decisions that you hear about are on the court, unlike the dude we'd like to trade for him.

honestly this seems like a bad move for them unless we put in a second or something, a first is way to much just to move tinsley.

I would include the 2 Dallas second rounders as well to get this done, but NO first rounder...

Because Courtney Lee and JJ Redick are upgrades.

I seriously doubt Orlando would be too enticed by this deal, but I'd be willing to throw in a couple 2nd round picks to sweeten the pot, but again I doubt that they would bite. I read in that same Chad Ford article where Orlando's GM is high on character guys. So Tinsley is perfect for them! "Hey Dwight, I'll show you how to bang hookers in your armored car while having our trainer and my posse shoot at some drug dealers. Trust me, you'll love it."

I'd be happy with Bogans. I'm not sure if he'd play, but anything of value for Tinsley is good enough for me.

I was posting on the Magic board the other day and this trade came up there. Their fans seemed in favor of this deal pretty overwhelmingly. The couple that were opposed had monetary concerns.

Really? That surprises me. I have to say, looking at the other options that Ford laid out, Tinsley is the most talented guy they can get without having to give up something good.

I think we're all overlooking a major factor here. If they take on Tinsley and his 3 years, they would have absolutely no way to be able to re-sign Hedo Turkoglu. That itself is exactly why i don't see this deal happening.

When do they need to resign Turk? By this summer or next?

But I think it might be an option. I've always been curious how Tinsley would play if he would have a real competitor at the pg spot. Would he take his game to a next level to proove he is the leader of the team or start whining again? It's just too bad we couldn't see it happen this year with TJ and Jack.

Another option is a gentlemens agreement: we do the trade as stated above. He can play with the Magic. He can proove that he is healthy and what he is capable of. Who knows he even plays all games left. At the end of the year we take him back for the exact same guys Orlando gave us and we have a better chance of trading him again.

I'm pretty sure Orlando has Bird rights on Hedo, so they could re-sign him and go over the cap if they wanted to.

He has an unguaranteed contract for next year (basically a player option) which he may or may not choose to exercise. I think he will opt out, he's playing well enough to get a decent long term deal in now.

They can, but i see it as a bit past the point. They already have a minimum of $50m on the books for the 2011 season, not factoring in rookies, the option on Reddick (if he's around), Hedo's extension or Tinsley. Taking in estimates of 1m for the next two rookies, hedo's extension (8m?) and Jamaal's 7.5m, you end up with a figure of roughly $72.5m on the books for a 9 man roster.

I realize it's all hindsight, with possibilities of other trades and so on. But that is not a very good spot to be in, especially for a team who still might not be an elite contender at that point.

JT and Graham for Bogans and Cook? I'd be glad to give the 2 2nd rounders to make it happen. Or JT & the 2nds for Battie.

Gremz is right. The Hedo resigning is exactly what the concern was for Magic fans. I believe they have his bird rights though and could exceed the cap to keep him, but it becomes a money issue at that point. I don't really like the Magic's salary structure personally, but at least Howard is well worth the money.

All of the players that were brought up as Nelson replacements make about the same amount of money (Watson and Udrih for example). Watson has only one more year, but that still messes with the Hedo resigning. Tinsley has a bad rep, but if you aren't giving up anything that you care about then he certainly has upside for a winning team.

Orlando traded Keith Bogans today and cash consideration for Tyronn Lue. All but killing a Tinsley to Orlando deal.

LINK, the Lue deal.

Pretty low-risk, low-reward move for them. Can't blame them really for not wanting to make any big move when they've been playing well.

Man that's a small option. I guess they're not going for a title this year after all

I am puzzled by this deal myself... Either they have great confidence in AJ, or they have great confidence in Lee and Turkoglu
