Yahoo: Suns ponder deals for Stoudemire

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Fri Feb 6, 2009 3:04 am

Sources believe the Suns are more apt to shop Stoudemire to the Eastern Conference, where Toronto and New York are natural possibilities. Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo drafted Stoudemire for the Suns, and Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni helped turn him into an All-Star. Still, the acrimonious nature of Colangelo’s and D’Antoni’s departures could lessen Phoenix management’s willingness to deal with them.

Nevertheless, Phoenix promises once more be at the center of the league’s biggest trade talks leading up to the deadline.

I know...AGAIN?

Do we even make a phone call or does Phoenix make the call to us?

They will likely want Smoove,Horford or Marvin. Perhaps a combo of those two. More than likely Horford and Marvin. I don't see Smoove being traded now that he is locked up long term. Amare would have to go back to playing C for us. There is no way in hel Smoove goes back to playing SF.

Both Amare and Bosh need to go somewhere there's a good defensive center who won't care if he gets shots.

Phoenix should have dealt Amare to us two years ago and gotten KG from Minnesota in a three-way-deal. But they were too stubborn and wouldn't deal the guy. I bet they wish they had that one back now.

^^^Who is that?

It's certainly not the Hawks, who have NO defensive center, much less a good one.

We can do something like Amare+Barbosa for J. Smith+Marvin+Law. I'm very reluctant in letting Horford go, it just doesn't feel right.

I like Amare but I will say what I have said since the summer of 07-he is a bad fit for the Hawks. The Hawks don't have a real center to play alongside him(as mrh said)and the Hawks will never be committed to running an uptempo offense under Woodson to hide some of his weaknesses.. That's why I preferred the rumored trade for Gasol instead of Amare at the time despite Amare being a more talented player IMO.

That's pretty unfair, don't you think? Horford takes a good bit better more'n he gives.

Horford's a good player, but he's not a center.

It works for now, but it's not going to work long-term if you want a championship team.

he is playing that for us NOW and he's better than "no defensive center, much less a good one."

And, YES, we can win a championship with Horford. BOS is the team we'd have to beat to win the East, and Horford has already shown he can shine in the playoffs against them. The Lakers are probably the team we'd meet in the finals and, again, Horford has shown he can shine against Gasol.

Horford by himself is better than any package that Toronto or New York can put together.

but Amare doesn't solve the Hawks' center problems, and if Amare did become a Hawk, ATL fans would soon become tired of his lack of defense, just like alot of Suns fans.

Off the top of my head there are two Eastern teams that could make package offers that might entice Phoenix,
Chicago and Detroit.

Chicago could offer Joakim Noah (or Thabo), Tyrus Thomas, Drew Gooden (expiring) and 1st round pick.
Detroit could offer Rasheed Wallace (expiring), Amir Johnson, and a 1st round pick.

Atlanta could make an offer but it would mostly likely gut the team to make the salaries work.

Chicago's pick would be higher, but the value of the assorted pieces is questionable. Amare would give Chicago the low post scoring they've missed for years and they have Rose as a penetrate and dish PG. Aaron Gray would be serviceable as a defensive C allowing Amare to play the 4.

Detroit would be sacrificing its big offseason cap room, but who was going to be out there that was more coveted than Amare? They would still have Maxiell and McDyess to pair with Amare on the front line without taking away too many touches. Wallace would help Phoenix this year as he can function totally on the perimeter offensively allowing Shaq plenty of space down low. Either trade would help Phoenix reload on talent as this year has a lot of PGs and PFs projected in the draft.

BTW, wouldn't Amare be better off playing C in the East than PF in the West?

Gotta agree with evil on Rasheed. He would be a better fit in Phoenix than Amare is right now. Phoenix is apparently not comfortable with Amare along with Shaq, and it frees up the Phoenix owner for long-term commitments. The purge can begin.
Will Detroit get rid of that swagger and take on that salary? They might, especially if they don't consider AI coming back:

Prince/Hamilton/Stuckey/Stoudamire/AI....not sure about the defense but how good defensively is Rasheed anyway at this stage?

I don't think the Hawks are a fit for Amare; you aren't letting Al go, and you just long-term'ed Smoove. I think you let this lineup play a bit more together and go as far as you can this year. No big changes, but another big man sure would help.

You are forgetting about Orlando and the Cavs, Howard and Big Z. horford is too small to handle either one, especially without Josh Smith around to bail him out.

Boston's title window is closing fast.

If you are asking can Horford handle Orlando and Cleveland, I say by himself, no. But that is what Smoove brings to the team; the ability to help Big Al, and they seem to play well together.
Marvin also has been going to the boards on defense lately and I like the energy of our frontline.
Getting confidence on the road is what they need to work on; that is their current question mark because they will need to win on the road in the playoffs.

You are missing the point. If we trade Smith for Amare then Smith won't be around to bail Horford out when he is overmatched.

Horford doesn't have to dominate each center we play for us to be a championship team, he just has to keep us in the game. There are other players on this team.

In ORL's case, we were 2-2 against them last year and 1-2 so far this year, with one loss this year being very close. Yes, Horford can help us against them.

Against CLE, Z hurts Horford, I concede. And Yao is trouble for him, as well. That's what the rest of the team is for. Are we going to complain if Joe can't beat every man he matches up against?

The center you guys are talking about is very rare. If we have to have a Shaq, why play the game?

I'm not sure how many times we have touched on this, but what would the chances be of us convincing Speedy to let us trade him to Phoenix and have him retire there, and they can have the contract come off the books?

If we are willing to pursue Amare we can offer more. Amare, Devin Harris and Vince Carter. That might be a dangerous team, but one that doesn't play much defense, and if they trade for Amare it may end all the Lebron James to New Jersey talk.

Nets Offering Yi, Anderson And Draft Picks For Amare?

The Nets have reportedly inquired about Amare Stoudemire, and are waiting to hear from Suns general manager Steve Kerr about their initial bid.

The offer, according to a general manager aware of what Kerr is looking for, would likely include Yi Jianlian, Ryan Anderson, and one of three first round picks that New Jersey has in the next two drafts.

In order to match salaries, the Nets would probably ask the Suns to take Bobby Simmons off their hands as well.

"I think the Nets could make a quality offer, though it depends largely on how the Suns feel about (Yi). But Amare could make a lot of teams formidable overnight," the aforementioned GM said.
