News on Big Al's knee injury

NEW ORLEANS (TICKER) —Minnesota Timberwolves center Al Jefferson left Sunday’s 101-97 loss to the New Orleans Hornets with 27 seconds to go in the fourth quarter with an apparent right knee injury.

Jefferson came down awkwardly on his right leg when attempting to block Sean Marks’ shot underneath the basket. The 24-year-old hobbled around in extreme pain before going down and holding his right knee.

After being looked at for a couple minutes, Jefferson was helped off the court by a couple of his teammates, putting little or no pressure on his leg.

The centerpiece of the trade that sent Kevin Garnett to the Boston Celtics, Jefferson is averaging a team-high 23.1 points and 11.0 rebounds after recording his sixth straight double-double in the loss. He had 25 points and 14 rebounds before exiting.

The fifth-year pro set career highs with 21.1 points and 11.1 rebounds while playing in all 82 games for the Timberwolves last season.

Al landed on the side of his right foot and his knee buckled. To me it looked to be a a lateral strain. Al then hopped around before falling to the court in obvious pain.

Please post and information on his injury here.

Can't really see anything other than Al is going to land on his right leg.

if its the knee then here comes a top 5 pick.

MRI would not be until tomorrow morning after the swelling went down.

Did Jefferson have a knee injury in the past?

It is good that he can put pressure on it but that doesn't mean it isn't a bad injury. Hopefully it is just a sprain and he might just need a game or two.

I'd take 30-35 wins over a top five pick.

I agree, top 5 pick would be nice (although I think we'd still end up in the 6-7 range) but we we're not going to be able to make the jump from bottom 5 to top 5, the only way we can attract any free agents is by winning. Continually adding high draft picks doesn't usually do it alone (see Grizzlies, Clippers, Bobcats, Kings, etc.). I guess it would give Love some more burn, but he's finally getting some good minutes already...and we don't have any other big men to develop. I do not want to see Cardinal getting 30 minutes a game, nor do I want to see Gomes at the Center when Love is out, we are incredulously undersized without AL, this would be a huge blow. I guess the possible upside is maybe we can trade McCants/Collins expiring contracts for a young big with a little potential - maybe.

I'm hopeful it's just a cartiledge tear and he would most likely be back after all-star break. If so, who is out there to sign to 1 or 2 10 day contracts?

Otherwise, if he is to be out 4-8 weeks or longer, we should pull the trigger on one of the many trades that have been bantered about here for the last 3 months. One that includes a young prospect at center to get a look at him before the draft.
I've been a fan since the beginning and I will be until my end.

You know I completely agree with you.
If I had to bet it is an MCL tear.

Ugh, this whole thing just makes me sick. The only good thing for Al is the fact that his game is so grounded, we shouldn't have to worry about any knee type injuries limiting his effectiveness going forward. He's pretty built too, so I think that will help him out....I'm just so sad right now, this sucks.

Come on Al be ok..If he's out for an extended period of time I will probably quit watching the games to try and preserve my sanity and I really REALLY don't want that. Please be alright..it's not even that we would be extremely screwed personnel wise although we would be, but everyone would just mentally give up without our fearless leader THE Al Jefferson. They would see no point in trying without him...even if it is only subconscious. I'm probably being pessimistic but dangit we NEED Al!

Very doubtful it is MCL. MCL's are usually damaged from the leg taking a hit where it cannot extend. It's like a QB taking helmet to the knee while he is standing straight up to pass. Most basketball injuries involve lateral movements so you are probably looking at ACL from what I saw. The bad part is Al hearing a pop. If it is the ACL and he needs reconstruction--he might not be back until this time next year or possibly the start of the following year.
