OT: Shaq Trade to Knicks suggestion

Post#1 » by knicks742 » Mon Feb 9, 2009 2:23 pm

Hey guys,

I posted this on the Knicks forum and was hoping for some of your input as well. I come in peace. :D

It is my understanding that the Suns are looking to trade Shaq and what they want back for him is simply expiring contracts so here is a deal that works in the trade checker.

Shaq and Barbosa for

Marbury, Jeffries and Nate

Why for Phoenix:

The main part of this deal for Phoenix is to chop off Shaq's salary for next season. However, as we all know from other transactions, normally the cost for chopping off that much salary is normally a first rounder with appropriate protections. Phoenix wouldn't want to offer a first rounder so what else can the Knicks get?

One way the Suns can add value to the Knicks is by doing the second part of the deal which is basically Jeffries and Nate for Barbosa. Why would the Knicks or Suns do that? If the Suns decided to not resign Nate, they would save $20 million of salary next season since Jeffries and Barbosas' salaries are basically the same in $ and length. Even if they resign Nate, they most likely will be able to resign him for about $5 million which is less than Barbosa is making and still leaves them with $15 million in savings from Shaq's salary.

For the Knicks, Barbosa basically comes in to replace Nate as guard off the bench. The key here is that we are replacing Jeffries' salary in 2010 with Barbosa's and since we don't have to resign Nate we just saved possibly $5 million from adding to our cap. Barbosa is also likely to have some decent value in the summer of 2010 so if need be, we should be able to move him straight up for cap space.

Thoughts?

Aren't you a Bulls fan? What are you doing here?? This was for Suns' fans specifically. Thank you, see you at the Knicks board.

If we're going to trade Shaq to NYK, we'll do it for Marbury straight up for instant salary relief.

That's the point, it doesn't make sense for the Knicks to take on a $40 million hit (salary and tax) for the pleasure of having Shaq fu at 37. Not many, if any, other teams can offer to provide that type of salary cap relief. So what's our motivation? I think the second part of the trade makes it more palatable for the Knicks to take on that obligation and the Suns owner will still get $15 million in cap relief and a young player that he can sign to replace Barbosa, after all, Nate is the 3rd best scorer off the bench this season so its not like he is chopped liver.

Nate's a good player, no denying that, but Barbosa is signed to a fantastic contract, so I don't think they'd give him up just to make Shaq's salary disappear, and one of the main things they're looking for is to get him off the books this year. They want 09 expirings, and Jeffries+Nate doesn't help Sarver in that regard.

I thought Barbosa was struggling in the system now. Plus his contract is 1 year longer than Jeffries. We are offering to take $15 million off next year in one fell swoop. You don't think that Sarver would take that when all it is costing him is Barbosa and he is basically getting the same player back in Nate who he can get even cheaper in this market? Probably for $5 million? I actually didn't realize Barbosa's deal was 1 year longer, not sure I would do this deal now.

Barbo's actually picked it up of late, playing really, really well over the past month or so. And I think we'd take Barbosa over Nate, due to the height difference. And yeah, not sure Walsh wants to take back salary past 2010.

I think we would still do this deal because Barbosa would go back to being a top sixth man with Dan and we would be able to trade him before 2010. Well I just also saw the other Shaq trade so i think you guys look to have bigger hopes for what you get back for Shaq anyways. Well best of luck guys, I know it's tough right now but take it from a Knicks fan, eventually things turn around. :)

--- so in essence we traded Marion and Banks for Jeffries, Starbury and Nate.
Yeeesh.

+1 with rsavaj on this one - you get Shaq, who can actually play for you, for Steph. Can't see it any other way.
That means we traded Marion and Banks for Steph but, hey, them's the breaks.
(I see Miami is having a hard time moving Banks' salary ...)
