David Aldridge expects more Gasol-like donations
http://www.nba.com/2009/news/features/0 ... index.html
David Aldridge thinks Amare, Kaman, Nocioni, Chandler, et al. are all likely to be donated by their existing teams, because the owners have lost so much money in the recent economy.
He further says that Raef's contract is covered by insurance, making it the most attractive expiring in the league, suggesting the Blazers could pick up another big piece.

Someone's going to fall into Cleveland's lap. With Ben Wallace nearly done and Cleveland having Wally's expiring contract, I can see Chandler ending up in Cleveland or maybe they get Shaq?
Boston should inquire about MoPete.
As for Portland, maybe they get Vince Carter? Can't see them going after a big man with Alridge and Oden there.

If Chicago is really that hard up we should make a push for Gordon.

It is fascinating. Just shows you how bad the economy truly is. It even killed the filthy rich in the balls. I wish things would pick up already with the economy.

Re: David Aldridge expects more Gasol-like donations
Yeah the problem with the strategy is that there is not a lot of teams that can provide the expiring contracts and the young talent and some that can are not exactly the destination that Amare is going to have in mind.
If your the Pacers just because you can does it mean you do?
Obviously DET is in position but they are going to give up good players to get good players.
CHI is set but not a contender this season even with Amare.
POR and CLE look like great destinations except they don't need a big for this season and can CLE maintain a 90 million dollar pay roll?
That actually makes a GS a player if they can move a one of the wing guys to a team with an expiring then they could possibly get in on Amare or Chandler.

That is what makes the cavs scary. Cavs could end up getting a player like Jefferson or Carter by the trade deadline by just trading them Wally and his expiring contract. If the Cavs do make a move like this they have to be favorites to at the very least come out of the east.

It would absolutely not surprise me to see Stern and the NBA look the other way while someone "gifts" a stud to CLE for peanuts...
It's still 17 to 11!!!!

Why shouldn't the league look the other way? If both teams agree to the trade I see no problem with it.

What's worse, Eric Snow is another of those insurance-helped contracts, and Wally is a good-looking white guy (hence marketable) who's playing decently.

Portland is also a threat for a three-way -- get a guy at a size they want, while another team upgrades from small to large.

It's only a donation if it doesn't benefit your team.

I don't really know how much you gotta worry about the Cavs doing anything significant. From what we are hearing in Cleveland we could very well stay pat. All of the injuries could hinder us from making a move. With Pavlovic out 6 weeks now, West still has another week or 2 until he comes back, and Kinsey is out for a few more weeks. They don't know if they could afford to move Wally right now because we are thin at the guard positions and he is playing well. I think we were mainly looking for another big. This could all be a smoke screen but as a Cavs fan i'm not getting my hopes up for any trades. One of our most reliable beat writers said we could be taking the Celtics route of last year and wait to see what players get bought out. He said rumor is that Joe Smith could get traded to the Kings and if that happens he see's him getting bought out and he would be a guy the Cavs would love to bring back.

That's true, but people really stretch the definition of "benefiting the team". If you trade an asset for dirt cheap, for less than its real value, you are not "benefiting the team", even if there is some marginal value in getting rid of the player ie äddition by subtraction"
Like if you have an expensive car, but no driver's license, and are still wasting money paying for insurance...so you remedy the situation by selling it for 10 dollars. You have 10 dollars you didn't have before; you're not wasting money on insurance anymore; but you damn sure didn't "benefit"by missing out on the 30,000 dollars or whatever that you should have gotten when you sold it.
Not many "donations" benefit the teams doing the donating.

Re: David Aldridge expects more Gasol-like donations
I never thought the Gasol trade was as bad as everyone made it out. It was bad for everyone else but the Grizz got exactly what they wanted out of the deal. Young players and draft picks and not blowing milllions on a 17 win team.
The Cavs adding Amare makes sense long term but it is overkill in the frontcourt for this year, and I don't know if Amare is the guy to pair with LeBron, my guess would be someone a little more committed on the defensive end would be the idea.
It should be fun to listen to anyhow.

Cleveland doesn't have enough for Amare.. Chicago can offer Kirk Hinrich and Tyrus Thoams for Amare..
I can see Cleveland getting Shaq. Bron + Shaq = huge ratings. Stern would love to see Kobe, Shaq and Bron in the finals.

Why would any team trade for Shaq? hes still owed a ton of money and how much is really left in the tank? Doesnt make sense with Lebrons style either.

It doesn't matter what Aldridge insinuates with this article - while deals may be lighter than usual, the teams trading STAR players like Amare are going to require legit players in return in addition to the expiring deals - Cleveland has no shot at Amare because they have no young player that would satisfy Phoenix's desire for rebuilding pieces.
No team planning to stay in business will take JUST expiring deals - picks and prospects are still paramount to any team making a deal...

He has one year left on his deal and has had a good season this year...
