Jays Sign Former 1st Overall Pick

Post#1 » by jalenrose#5 » Tue Feb 10, 2009 11:34 pm

The Jays have signed SP Matt Bush to a minor league deal. Bush is a converted SS. He was drafted 2nd overall in the 2004 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres. He had TJS last year, but i'm told he had around 16 K's in 7 IP before the surgery. Diamond in the rough possibility?

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3897562

Two weeks after he was drafted, Bush was suspended indefinitely by the Padres after he was arrested at a bar across the street from the team's complex in Peoria, Ariz. Among the charges were underage drinking and that he bit one of the bouncers who tried to escort him out of the bar. Assigned to the Padres' rookie-level Peoria team, Bush was reinstated a month later. He pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct, trespassing and underage possession or consumption of alcohol.

Bush was involved in a bar fight last summer, also in Peoria.

Interesting, a little misconduct not bad.

He's a headcase coming off major surgery who has pitched less than 10 innings in real competition over the last five years, but it can't really hurt. Dump him in Lansing, give him a few months, and expect that in all likelihood he'll be released by the end of the season. If so, it probably will have cost Toronto the same amount it'd cost for a Rule-5 guy.

As for 'a little misconduct', three alcohol-fueled brawls is a pretty significant trendline.

Matt Bush was drafted 1st overall in 2004.

So now we have 2 of the worst 1st overall picks in the MLB since 1991 Brien Taylor in Bryan Bullington and Matt Bush. Cool.

If/when the White Sox give up on Matt Anderson, we can add him to the collection. Heh, too bad we missed out on the only other 1st overall 'bust' in recent years...the one that's now an All-Star.

When I saw this at the "ticker" on TSN, I thought we re-acquired Dave Bush... I had no idea this Matt Bush was a top overall pick!

He was drafted as a Short stop, wasnt he? If so, this is a really cheap way to pick up a prospect who could pull a Josh Hamilton and add some depth to an organization that has drafted poorly at that particular infield position over the JP era. IMO you cant lose with this move.

He proved himself to be an awful SS in his 4 years in the minors. My guess is that they see him as a reliever now.

Josh Hamilton never actually had a problem putting up the numbers in the minors like this guy.

Here's a vid of Bush pitching. Not going to lie, he reminds me a little bit of Ervin Santana.
