Wright scored 23 points, his best scoring game in nearly three months, Howard also had 23 points, and the Mavericks won 118-100 over Sacramento on Tuesday night to make the Kings the first NBA team guaranteed to have a losing season.

Dirk Nowitzki added 21 points, Jason Kidd had 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Erick Dampier had 16 rebounds. J.J. Barea, the primary fill-in for Terry, had 10 points and four assists without a turnover in 25 1/2 minutes.

Kevin Martin had 18 points, though he missed nine consecutive shots at one point for Sacramento. John Salmons had 16 and Shelden Williams 15.

Hamilton, who scored 30, was at a loss to decipher this one, too.

Rose, who finished with 23 points, scored nine in the final 4 minutes and started that 9-0 run with two free throws. He took a shoulder to the face from McDyess, who was trying to set a pick, on the inbounds after Gordon's four-point play and appeared to be in tears. But Rose shook it off.

Thomas, who finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds, added a put-back basket and blocked a layup by Stuckey during that spurt. And Nocioni added 14 points for the Bulls, who pulled out the dramatic win after a 4-3 trip.

Cavaliers guard Williams picked for All-Star Game
Mo Williams will play in the All-Star Game after all. Twice snubbed, Williams, the Cavaliers point guard, was chosen by NBA commissioner David Stern Tuesday. Williams will replace Toronto Raptors forward Chris Bosh , who will miss the game because of a sprained right knee.

Williams wasn't chosen by Eastern Conference head coaches as a reserve, then was bypassed by Stern in favor of Boston's Ray Allen when Orlando's Jameer Nelson had to be replaced because of injury. Williams, who is averaging 17.1 points, will make his first All-Star game appearance.

The All-Star Game is Sunday in Phoenix.

Brand needs six months to recover from surgery

76ers forward Elton Brand will need six months of recovery on his surgically repaired right shoulder and should be ready for the start of the 2009-10 season. "He's got a 95 percent chance of returning as good as he is or was before," said Brand's surgeon, Dr. Craig Morgan .

Morgan repaired the torn labrum in Brand's right shoulder on Monday. Brand dislocated his right shoulder against Milwaukee on Dec. 17. Brand averaged 13.8 points and 8.8 rebounds in 29 games.

Rockets becoming unstable: Who does this sound like? There have been too many signs that this team just does not care enough. For whatever reasons -- and that silly, little locker room tension would qualify as a pathetic excuse/explanation -- the (blank) cannot maintain intensity and focus, effort and energy game after game. This is who they are. It does not matter now who they thought they'd be. They cannot depend on who they might still believe they can become. They are a team on the fringe of the playoff pack, very capable of losing to anyone.

The Pistons? The Suns? Nope. What you just read is a spot-on analysis of the Houston Rockets by Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle. And consider this: The Rockets are 10 games over.500. With all the discord and rancor going on there, you'd think they were 10 under. "There's no sense of urgency," Rafer Alston told the Chronicle. "And I don't think guys are paying attention to the league, to the standings. We're not that far from the top; we're not that far from 10th. We're back to taking baby steps." Feigen has gone so far as to suggest a roster shakeup is in order. He's not advocating a salary dump or an addition-by-subtraction deal. He thinks they need to add a significant, DNA-changing player.Clearly, there's some tension in the locker room. Ron Artest took a couple veiled verbal shots at oft-injured and under-producing Tracy McGrady. McGrady fired back that some players (Artest) were "talking too damn much."

Said McGrady: "I do know that you can see that amongst ourselves, things are not how they used to be, meaning the bonding, the togetherness with our team." Coach Rick Adelman can see it, too, and he has tried to quash any splintering. "I've been doing this a long time," Adelman said. "There's not too much that slides past me. ... You're going to have times throughout the year you're going to have guys irritated or whatever. It's important it does not carry over and stay and fester." A comeback victory over Minnesota lightened the mood -- for a minute. On Monday, Houston collapsed again, this time at Milwaukee. "A locker room is always a few wins away from being a good locker room, a few losses away from being a bad locker room," said Rockets forward Shane Battier (Detroit Country Day). "All the bad things, the warts, are much more apparent in a losing streak or a bad streak, and the flaws are not as apparent when you're winning a few games." The warts still are there, win or lose.

Economy biting owners, too: If you want a clear understanding of why there's so much air behind the trade winds, go to NBA.com and check out David Aldridge 's column.

Aldridge explains the reason a team like Phoenix would be looking to dump a star like Amare Stoudemire , or an undersized contender like New Orleans would entertain offers for its best big man (Tyson Chandler ), is because owners have been steadily losing millions of dollars in the weakening economy.

Aldridge sites examples of an owner who has lost more than $100 million of his own personal wealth and another who has lost $1 billion since the recession began. "I don't think there's an owner in the NBA who hasn't lost money in this recession," an unnamed NBA executive told Aldridge.

28. L.A. Clippers: Back-to-back road wins -- fluke or foreshadowing?

Charging Bulls catch Pistons:Fourth-quarter lead evaporates. This might be a season low for the Pistons. After leading by 15 points with just more than 8 minutes remaining, the Pistons saw the Bulls battle back, and when Ben Gordon nailed a three-pointer with 16.7 seconds left and was fouled, Chicago took a 105-102 lead on his free throw. And in a game where Rasheed Wallace was dominant in the third quarter and Rip Hamilton scored 30 points, neither they nor any other Piston could make a play as the Pistons fell, 107-102, Tuesday night.

The Bulls (23-29) finished on a 17-2 run, and the final indignity was a turnover with 10.6 seconds left as the Pistons tried to score a quick basket. In a season where they had thoughts of contending for an NBA crown, the Pistons fell to 27-23 and lost another game in which it appeared to have been in control. “I don’t know, I can’t explain it,” Tayshaun Prince said quietly when asked how the team could recover from this loss. “When you lose one like this it’s tough.”The Pistons were missing Allen Iverson, who had flu-like symptoms and remained at the team hotel during the game. Gordon led the Bulls with 24 points and rookie Derrick Rose added 23. Wallace put the Pistons on his back with 15 points in the third quarter.

Wallace, who had 20 points and 10 rebounds, really got it going during a stretch where he scored nine straight points for the Pistons as they increased their lead to 85-71 at the end of the third quarter. Wallace took turns abusing Tyrus Thomas and Joakim Noah in the post, and he also nailed a three-pointer during the stretch. Antonio McDyess' put-back at the third-quarter horn gave the Pistons their big lead, and it looked like they would cruise. The Bulls took a 30-22 lead at the end of the first quarter by forcing seven Detroit turnovers.Correct that. Several turnovers were of the unforced, careless variety. But the Bulls did catch the Pistons off-guard by showing some full-court pressure.

Pistons can't outrun Bulls: Detroit fritters away 15-point lead in fourth quarter to lose its fifth straight at United Center. A 15-point lead with eight minutes left? Not good enough. A 10-point lead with 3:30 left? Nope. Not good enough. The Pistons were outscored 17-2 in the final 3:30 Tuesday night, allowing the Bulls to get away with a 107-102 victory at United Center. "It hurts," said Richard Hamilton, who had 30 points but none down the stretch. "It's kind of silly. We played well most of the game, guys defended, we shared the ball, we played together, but losing a lead like that, we just can't do that." Ben Gordon (24 points) won it with a four-point play with 16.7 seconds left. Derrick Rose, who triggered the comeback, rebounded his missed layup and kicked the ball out to Gordon in the corner. He drained the 3-pointer and was fouled by Rodney Stuckey. "It's like a broken record," Antonio McDyess said. "We come in here and say the same thing every time. We weren't supposed to lose that game no matter what. It's just disappointing."

Here's what the collapse looked like: The Pistons' 15-point lead slid to 10 with 5:50 left. Rose kept attacking off the dribble, beating traps and making plays at the basket. The Bulls made 15-of-17 free throws in the fourth. The Pistons got to the line three times. The Bulls also had six offensive rebounds, which they converted into eight second-chance points (they had 18 offensive rebounds and 19 second-chance points). "That was the tale of the tape, right there," Pistons coach Michael Curry said. The lead was still 10 with 3:30 left, thanks to a couple of baskets by Tayshaun Prince (16 points). But the Pistons missed their next five shots, two of them open looks from Hamilton, another a layup by Stuckey that Tyrus Thomas rejected. Rose hit two free throws. Thomas converted an offensive rebound. Then, after a Hamilton miss, Gordon beat everybody down the court and was fouled. His two free throws made it 100-96 with 2:27 left. After Stuckey had his layup attempt blocked by Thomas, Rose made one of two free throws and the lead was down to three with less than two minutes left. "They got into the bonus early, got to the free-throw line and got a rhythm going," Prince said. "That slowed us down offensively. Their energy picked up and just took over the momentum."

Another miss by Hamilton and a virtually uncontested jumper by Rose put the Bulls within a point, 100-99, with 1:14 left. Wallace converted two free throws, the Pistons' only points in the final 3:30, to extend the lead back to three with exactly 60 seconds left. Rose answered again, beating Stuckey off the dribble and scoring unmolested at the basket. The Pistons went back to Wallace, but this time Joakim Noah deflected the pass into the corner. Wallace retrieved it with 15 seconds still on the shot clock, but he rushed a shot from the corner and missed badly. "We made some mistakes," Curry said. "Rasheed took a bad shot early in the shot clock. It's unfortunate, but we have to be better than that down the stretch." Wallace, who did not speak to the media after the game, was almost solely responsible for the Pistons' having a 15-point lead. He scored 15 points, exploiting the smaller Thomas, in the third quarter alone. He finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds. But his errant shot gave the Bulls the ball, down by a point, with 28.7 seconds left, setting the stage for Gordon's heroics. "This really hurts us," McDyess said. "We had this game won and gave it away." Rose finished with 23 points, while Thomas had 22. The Pistons have now lost five straight at the United Center.

The Atlanta Hawks have guaranteed themselves their best first half of a season in a decade. The Detroit Pistons aren't feeling nearly as optimistic as they near the All-Star break after another tough loss. The teams face each other in their final game before the break Wednesday at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Atlanta (30-21) needs only seven more victories to match its total of 37 from 2007-08, and is approaching the break with positive momentum. It has won three of its last four - including Tuesday's 111-90 home win over Washington - and is currently fourth in the Eastern Conference. Six Hawks scored in double figures - four off the bench - against the Wizards. Joe Johnson had a team-high 22 points to go along with eight assists and six rebounds, while Flip Murray added 16 points as Atlanta bounced back from Saturday's 24-point loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Hawks got a season-high tying 58 points from their bench on Tuesday. "That was a total team effort," coach Mike Woodson said. "The starters did what they're supposed to do and the guys off the bench were very good." With Tuesday's win, Atlanta guaranteed that it will go into the All-Star break with 30 wins for the first time since the 1998-99 season, when it was 31-19 at the break. To match that win total, the Hawks will need to end their futility in Detroit. They've lost seven straight at the Palace, and have averaged a paltry 86.4 points while dropping 24 of their last 27 visits there. Atlanta did beat the Pistons 85-78 at home on Dec. 21, snapping a four-game overall losing streak in the series. Mike Bibby, who returned Tuesday after missing Saturday's game with a sprained foot, had 27 points in that win. Detroit (27-23) won a season-high seven straight after losing to the Hawks but has gone just 6-12 since, and has dropped four of its last six. The Pistons led by 10 points with 3 1/2 minutes remaining Tuesday night in Chicago, but wound up with a disheartening 107-102 loss.

"I couldn't explain this if I tried," said Detroit's Tayshaun Prince, who scored 16 points. Richard Hamilton had 30 points and Rasheed Wallace added 20 and 10 rebounds, but the Pistons were outscored 28-16 at the free-throw line and gave up 36 points in the fourth quarter. "It's really hard to point out right now because it hurts so much," Hamilton said. Detroit is allowing 111.7 points in its last three games after giving up and average of 88.8 in the previous four. The defensive inconsistencies are in large part to blame for Detroit's relative struggles in the first half of the season. Though they are a respectable fifth in the East, the Pistons are guaranteed their fewest wins at the All-Star break since 2001-02, when they were 26-21. On the bright side, Detroit went 24-11 down the stretch that season to win its first of two straight Central Division titles.Pistons guard Allen Iverson missed Tuesday's game with flu-like symptoms, and was scheduled to be re-evaluated Wednesday morning.
