What Maryland needs is a coach that can recruit guys bigs who are not stiffs and guys like Beasley, Durant, etc who can practically walk to UMCP from where they live.

I'm certainly not going to argue that UMD's scouting needs revamping, but I can understand why we're not heavily going after the huge names like Durant and Beasley -- because UMD puts a lot of value on players they know are going to stay longer than a year.
If you put value in this then they should be graduating there players. That little cop out is BS since we don't graduate are players. I used to be a Williams apologist, but look at are recruits and the team we have now and then don't tell me he has royally screwed us for a few years because the lack of talent on this team.

1 year of Durant would bring you instant credibility and national attention. It goes beyond just one year b/c it will affect future recruits as well. He could use the "hey we got Kevin Durant to come here, that's how bad people want to come."

What does graduating have to do with wanting the players to stick around a few years? I agree with Rico. He recruits 4 year guys who can learn the system. The problem is we got screwed out of Gilchrist by the ACC and a couple of our other recruits couldn't make the grades. Big men are on the way next year.

Also, it's not like this team has fallen off a cliff recently. They really should have been in the NCAA's about 2 of the last 4(I think it's 4) that they haven't made it. They still put up 20 win seasons even if this is the exception, we will be back next year.

Dayton is currently 19-2. They have a good, young coach, Brian Gregory. Dayton signed him through 2012-2013, so he's not available. Just saying this is the kind of coach I think the Terps need. Guy averages well over 20-wins, and does it with no-name players.

Hi schedule may be soft, but he managed to beat Marquette this season, and they are currently ranked #8.

Butler is 19-1 and is coached by 31-yr old Brad Stevens. He went 30-4 in his first year coaching.

There are two players at 6'8" and 6'9" niether are even top 150 recruits... Sorry I love Gary, but his recruiting is horrible, his developing these players as men not the greatest, his ability to change on the fly not so good, and his ability win this year really bad.

Well apparently a top recruit (and a teammate of one of the commits for 2009) came to the game yesterday. If we get him, it's a different story.

Actually Jordan Williams is #102 on Rivals.

And Halcyon, I assume you mean Lance Stephenson. 6'5" G #9 overall. That would be a verrry nice pickup if they got him. You could have Vasquez, Bowie and Lance start with Hayes and Mosley off the bench, not bad at all. Another guy they might be going after is this guy Vinson. He's a wing, ranked in the 60's and just de-committed to loyola-marymount. Either would be a solid addition.

Pretty in-depth article on Gary Williams is yesterday's USA Today.

Ralph Friedgin's out and James Franklin is in for the football Terrapins. Gary better make the NCAAs or he's packing his stuff to go next.

EDITED- WHOOPS, that's just not true. Ralph Friedgin is fat. They call him the Fridge.

uh, James Franklin has only been named as the trendy Coach-in-Waiting. not the Coach-in-present-time.

Whoops .... better edit that before the folks in America wake up and catch that ... :)

That'll teach me for only catching parts of SportsCenter and running with it.

Thank you, lupin. Are you always so tactful?

Too late. The rumor is out. According to a reliable internet source, Ralph Freidgin is indeed... fat. :burger:

Never count Gary Williams out - especially when he's down. He's making a go at maybe the top HS player in the country - Lance Stephenson. The picture of Gary in the article says it all about his stepped up recruiting effort... and it made me laugh. http://www.zagsblog.com/2009/02/10/gary ... more-11592

pretty ballsy win considering VT was 6-3 in conference play and all the Washington Post crap was going on the past week. But here we go again...the classic "MD is in good shape and then gives a crucial game away in amazingly frustrating fashion" story. PLEASE, for the love of God, run the offense more through Milborne and less through Squez and Eric The Buzzkill Hayes. He's by far the best player on the damn team.

their next 3 games are tough. it will really help (obviously) if they can win at least one of them. i think the Duke and UNC games are at home so they might have a chance. don't know about clemson, but probably the best chance overall.

When you run the offense through Vasquez, you're basically saying to the team, "Flip a coin and if it comes up heads, we win. If it comes up tails, we lose".

The kid probably can't even pronounce the word "consistent" much less know what it means. Don't get me wrong, he's a fun player to root for and he has a ton of passion for the game but his play is so dramatically erratic that making him win us games is just a bad strategy.

Agreed. Milborne seems a lot more reliable in terms of making open shots and maintaining a good FG%. Why not look at him as the leader instead of a guy who does 2 great things that proceed to get negated by 5 bad things? Milborne kind of reminds me of a Butler type of player with a good midrange shot and the ability to do a few things with his back to the basket. I just wish he had a build more like Gist did.

What an abomination of a game from the Terps last night against Clemson.

We outplayed them in the first half, despite Vasquez and Milborne sucking horribly. Then the second half hits and we suddenly forget how to dribble and pass.

Ugh...
