GET INTO THE MIX!!!!!!!!
I'm surprised Portland hasn't made a stronger play for Carter. He'd seem to be a pretty solid fit in Portland. I still don't see any way that they offer up Bayless or Rudy for him, but I think they could match or slightly beat a lot of the offers that have been reported.
That said, I'm surprised you guys aren't very high (pun semi-intended) on the Howard offer. As an unbiased observer, that seems like a pretty solid deal. The drop-off from Carter to Howard isn't THAT far, he's really good friends with Harris and he's got a TO in 2010. Blazers definitely can't beat that offer if it's actually out there.
If I'm Kevin Pritchard, I call up the Rod Thorn and say...
"We want Carter and Dooling, here's who I'll make available for that deal, pick and choose who you want. Call us back if anything interests you, don't bother calling if you want someone who's not on this list:
Travis Outlaw
Martell Webster
Sergio Outlaw
Raef LaFrentz (basically has to be in the deal)
Channing Frye
Sergio Rodriguez
Ike Diogu
Shavlik Randolph
Blazer Picks"
I'd be lying if I told you I liked most of the possibilities based on what you have listed there. That said I'm a little more open to the "dump Vince for expirings" route since it would the Nets in a position to be $10-13 million under the cap next season, while still maintaining max cap room in 2010/11. With the current economic climate and so many teams saving for the following year, I wonder if the Nets could be able to take advantage and get say a Lamar Odom on a nice contract.
While I hate the idea of dealing Carter at a major discount, it's something I'd strongly consider at this point. The one thing I'd say is that if I'm getting hammered on the talent end of the trade (which we can't argue), I want you taking Najera too (or at a minimum instead of Dooling). IIRC the 2010/11 buyout on Najera is like $2.5 mil compared to 500K for Dooling.
The question I have is do you consider Frye/Diogu filler at this point? Since with the collection of bigs NJ has, they'd probably be filler for us.
With so many teams tight for money right now, maybe there's a 3-team trade where someone would give the Nets something for swapping Raef's insured expiring for someone else's non-insured expiring (basically saving the other team like $4 million).
Personally if the Dallas rumor is true, I'd do it in a heartbeat at this point, especially if the Dooling/Najera part is true.
While this is a plan B at best, Carter to POR for some combination of the above is something I'd consider.
