The official Alvin Gentry Thread

Post#1 » by SUNSARETHEBEST » Sun Feb 15, 2009 11:57 pm

So what does everyone think about him? Do you think he's just going to be a short term fix or does he have a chance to coach the Suns for many years to come? Also what do you guys think about his coaching style? Anyway feel free to discuss and give your input about the Phoenix Suns new head coach Alvin Gentry.

He coached one of the most fun teams to watch in the 2000-01 Clippers. I had season tickets for them.

I think he can do wonders with the style he utilized that year, coupled with the superior talent and knowledge he's acquired from Gentry. And if Iavaroni comes back, it'll be even better.

I'm pretty sure Gentry commands the respect of the players, which is the most essential thing.

I guess we'll see.

Sorry to sound stupid, but what kinda style is it? I am excited for the next few games to see if the team responds.

I remember it being fast-paced and exciting. I remember him using Quentin Richardson out of the post a lot. There was a lot of versatility involved.

Unfortunately, it was a long time ago, and I could be wrong.

wait a second, the whole porter being fired is still a rumor. no reports have been confirmed yet.

I would love to see iavaroni come back and work with Amare. Gentry would be nice because he knows the players, has seen both systems and know the players strengths and weaknesses. I think he could help this team get back into the playoffs as a coach. But the team has to respond, check the ego which I do not seeing with amare and especially shaq.

I guess we will find out tomorrow.

I'll take 'multiple team sources' as more than rumour...

Man, always trying to show me up tastic. Im kidding. The reason why I say still rumor is because it has not come out from the suns, so therefor, still a rumor in my book.

That's true...but multiple team sources would indicate it's a done deal and they're just hammering out the details of a payout/not detracting from the whole All Star thing...

they just sais on tnt that he has been informed he has been fired. I feel for the guy, but he was not the right hire for this team. I like that it is gentry because I think he will use amare better and use shaq in a better way to make this team better.

If SSOL is back lets hope he doesn't do what Dantoni and Porter did and only use 8 people in his rotation

That's great if Suns can include perimeter defense, else games will be decided on how bad the other team shoots.

We are still lacking the defensive perimeter guys that we need in order to play GREAT defensive. Two of our 3 best defenders (Raja, Diaw) are gone and that leaves 36yo Grant Hill as our best defender. It really doesn't look good when it is Barnes or Hill who are likely going to be given the defensive assignments against the best swingmen in the league. If we are to make a trade to better our team, we may have to, *gasp*, trade Barbosa for a defensive wing. I know Barbosa has been our more consistent players as of late and he has been playing great ball, but next to Amare, he has the highest trade value and while his scoring will be missed, it shouldn't be a big issue to ask J-Rich or Hill to be more aggressive on the offensive end to make up for Barb's contribution.

I may get some heat for that comment.

I think the bigger issue is if Shaq is not traded, then will he be willing to accept a more complimentary role so Gentry can bring back the run 'n gun? Does he respect Gentry enough to take a step down from being the main guy as he was under Porter?

I hope he will otherwise I can see him becoming a problem in the locker room.
