Celtics president Danny Ainge confirmed that guard Sam Cassell has been dealt to the Sacramento Kings for a protected second-round pick.

The move allows the Celtics to have one available spot now on their 15-man roster, which could be helpful in a trade or in signing a free agent. The trade deadline is Thursday.According to a source, the Kings are expected to waive Cassell and a team needing a veteran point guard may claim him off waivers.

Cassell, 39, has yet to play this season. He averaged 7.6 points and 2.1 assists for Boston last season after signing as a free agent March 4 following his buyout from the Clippers.

I've just been told by a source close to the Kings that the Sam Cassell deal is done.

The Kings get the Boston point guard and cash in the neighborhood of $500,000 to pay his salary and then some in exchange for a future second round draft pick. Considering cash is King for the financially-struggling Kings, it is worth noting that - per the numbers crunched by AOL/Sactownroyalty's Tom Ziller - the Kings make about $350,000 in this deal. What's more, the pick is heavily protected and I believe the Celtics won't get it if - as is expected - the Kings waive Cassell (Update: I'm told the Celtics would still get the pick, but it's conditional until 2015). I'm sure I'll be talking to Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie sometime today, but Boston GM Danny Ainge has confirmed the deal.

Backup centers Chris Mihm and D.J. Mbenga had to be separated near the end of Monday's practice when Mihm lashed out at his teammate for twice elbowing him in the face during a scrimmage.

Mbenga sat out the rest of practice before he, Mihm and assistant coach Kurt Rambis met to resolve the issue afterward.

Jackson downplayed the scuffle after practice, noting, "They haven't competed in a while, so they're trying to earn some playing time. Everyone's working hard at it."

Tracy McGrady will spend some of this week visiting out-of-town doctors to get more opinions on his left knee. He did not practice with the team on Monday evening, will not play tonight against New Jersey and is listed by the Rockets as day-to-day.

“I didn’t expect to see him,” said head coach Rick Adelman. “He’s gonna get second opinions, and we just have to deal with who we have right now and get ready for this game (tonight).”

McGrady, who has played in 35 of the Rockets’ 53 games this season, has not been on the court since he shot 1-for-9 and hit the underside of the rim while attempting a dunk at Milwaukee on Feb. 8.

The New Orleans Hornets and Oklahoma City Thunder have completed a deal that sends center Tyson Chandler to the Thunder, according to NBA front-office sources.

Sources with knowledge of the trade parameters told ESPN.com that the deal was approved by the league office Tuesday afternoon, with the Hornets receiving forwards Joe Smith and Chris Wilcox in exchange for their best interior defender.

The deal has yet to be announced by the teams, but sources say that the Hornets will also receive the draft rights to Devon Hardin, who was selected No. 50 overall by the Thunder in the 2008 draft.

First there were therapy and icing and laser treatments to strengthen the knee. Then came running, jumping, bending, stretching. On the track, in the gym, in the whirlpool, on the exercise machines. Repeat the following day.

For Andrew Bynum, the routine became a tedious, yet necessary, ordeal a year ago, all done in the name of a healthy knee. Now, the Lakers center is back on the trainer’s table trying to rehab a second knee injury, this one suffered against Memphis on Jan. 31. The Lakers center suffered a tear of his left medial collateral ligament during an on-court collision with Kobe Bryant. “He’s definitely bummed out. He wants to be playing,” trainer Sean Zarzana said Monday. “He had hit a stride where he was feeling confident with his knee and all. But he is making the best of the situation. He’s trying to keep upbeat.”

Zarzana said Bynum won’t start running – not even on weight resistance machines – until doctors give him a clean bill of health on the injury that the player described as a “medium to high level” tear of the MCL. Until then, Bynum’s day consists of icing, laser treatments and range of motion exercises 3-5 times a day. “He’s doing more physio-therapeutic treatments that allow you to heal,” Zarzana said. “Once we know that the ligament is in the proper position then we can gear it up. Once we are confident that the stability is there, we can start Andrew on a stationary bike.”

The Sacramento Kings have acquired veteran guard Sam Cassell from the Boston Celtics for a conditional second-round draft pick in 2015.

The 39-year-old Cassell hasn't played this season for the Celtics, who acquired him in early March before their run to the NBA title. He essentially served as another assistant coach this season with Boston, which also sent cash considerations to Sacramento in the trade.

The deal on Tuesday also decreases Boston's luxury tax obligations for the season. The Kings, who have the NBA's worst record at 11-43, didn't immediately announce whether Cassell would join the team or be released. Sacramento hosts the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night.Cassell has won three NBA championships during his 16 seasons in the league.

It really has not been talked about much - either here at Slam Dunk Central or the mainstream media - but the Detroit Pistons are making a personnel change that does not involve a transaction, according to the Detroit News. Specifically, coach Michael Curry is making a switch at power forward as he is - for the time being - going with Antonio McDyess to start games with Amir Johnson to come off the bench.

According to Curry, “Our hope is that Amir will play better against the second-line guys.” McDyees, in the beginning, kind of balked at the idea; but after conversations with Curry, he finally bought into the idea. Curry also said that Johnson, Jason Maxiell and *gasp* Kwame Brown will be used off the bench, depending on matchups.

At first glance, the move makes sense as the defense automatically gets better with McDyess starting. But 30 minutes tops a game is all I see McDyess getting in this experiment.

At practice Monday night, the Jazz learned they'll get one — and possibly two — of their injured players back in the lineup tonight.

Brevin Knight, the backup point guard who missed two games with a left quadriceps contusion, is healthy enough to go again.

But fans hoping to attend the Jazz's "Welcome Back Party" for both Carlos Boozer and Andrei Kirilenko might not want to buy tickets for the 7 p.m. home game against the Memphis Grizzlies.

With Greg Oden back home in Indiana during the All-Star break, his agent, Mike Conely Sr., told the Indianapolis Star the knee injury suffered last Thursday night in the loss to the Warriors is of the minor variety:

"I don't think it's that serious at all," Mike Conley Sr. said tonight. "He's going to rest it. After he hurt it (against Golden State) he went back in the game, and that's where I think the swelling came from. "It's a game-by-game situation, but it's more precautionary than anything."

Following the Rookie Challenge game, Oden said he likely would have played if it were a regular-season game.

After missing 12 consecutive games before the All-Star break with a sprained left ankle , Hornets starting center Tyson Chandler experienced a setback Monday.

Chandler completed only half of Monday's practice before experiencing soreness in his left ankle.

With 32 games remaining in the regular season, Hornets Coach Byron Scott was hoping Chandler could return tonight against the Oklahoma City Thunder at the Ford Center.

Less than two weeks ago, on Feb. 5, Ridnour suffered a fractured right thumb that was expected to keep him out of the lineup for at least four weeks.

Now it's possible the 6-foot-2 guard could return to Milwaukee's lineup later this week. "I think I'm way ahead of schedule," Ridnour said after finishing his shooting drills. "I'm just staying positive, trying to get ready and stay in shape. Hopefully, everything goes well these next couple days."

Ridnour missed the last three games before the break, leaving the Bucks without three-fifths of their normal starting lineup. Guard Michael Redd was lost for the rest of the season when he suffered torn knee ligaments Jan. 24, and center Andrew Bogut was ruled out for eight weeks on Feb. 4, due to back spasms.

The Chicago Bulls were widely considered the favorites to land Stoudemire, but sources say Phoenix is not as high on Bulls forward Tyrus Thomas -- who would have been packaged with Drew Gooden's $7.2 million expiring contract -- as media reports have suggested. The Detroit Pistons have a much larger expiring contract to offer but don't have nearly as many movable young players to add to Rasheed Wallace's $13.9 million ending salary as the Bulls do.

The New York Daily News (Julian Garcia) reports: Sean Williams, the Nets’ top draft pick in 2007, was arrested Sunday at Boston College for violating terms of a restraining order against him. Williams, who played at BC, was taken into custody prior to BC’s game against Duke and charged with trespassing, a misdemeanor. An arraignment is scheduled for later this month. Williams was at practice at the Toyota Center here last night but said “no comment” several times as he tied his sneakers and headed to the court.

The New York Post (Fred Kerber) reports: Sean Williams was arrested Sunday for violating terms of a restraining order that banned him from the Boston College campus. Williams, who declined comment, nodded his head affirmatively when asked if he had been invited to the B.C.-Duke game. So he went but violated the restraining order. Williams, you’ll recall, was bounced from the B.C. team in ‘07 for repeated team violations (read: marijuana). So by showing up he was guilty of trespassing, a misdemeanor. He faces a court hearing later this month.

The Boston Celtics announced today that the club has traded guard Sam Cassell and cash considerations to the Sacramento Kings for a future conditional second round draft pick.

“Sam was an important piece of our championship team last season. His profound knowledge of the game and his infectious personality will be missed from our locker room. We wish Sam the best of luck.” said Danny Ainge, Celtics President of Basketball Operations.

Cassell, a 6’3”, 193lb guard, is in his 16th NBA season. The former Florida State Seminole had yet to appear in a game for the Celtics this season. He averaged 4.5 points and 1.2 assists in 12.6 minutes per game during the 2008 NBA playoffs in which the Celtics won their NBA-record 17th title.

For the second time this season, the Memphis Grizzlies have assigned center Hamed Haddadi to the NBA Development League’s Dakota Wizards, the club’s D-League affiliate, Grizzlies General Manager and Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Wallace announced today.

Haddadi will return to Dakota after posting 6.0 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.55 blocks in 17.7 minutes in 11 games (seven starts) after being assigned to the Wizards on Nov. 24. Memphis recalled the 7-2, 280-pound center on Dec. 24.

The Ahvaz, Iran native recorded two points and one rebound in four minutes in his NBA debut on Dec. 30 vs. Phoenix, becoming the first Iranian-born player to appear in an NBA game. Haddadi has averaged 1.3 points and 1.3 rebounds in 3.5 minutes through four games in his rookie season.

The New Orleans Hornets have completed the first significant trade of the week, according to ESPN, sending Tyson Chandler to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Chris Wilcox and Joe Smith, plus the draft rights to DeVon Hardin.

The trade, which has been rumored for several days, demonstrates the Hornets' belief that Chandler may have peaked last season, when he averaged 11.8 points and 11.7 rebounds in helping the team emerge as one of the frontrunners in the NBA last season. His numbers have dropped off significantly this season, to 8.8 points and 8.3 boards, so the thinking is they should cash him in now. Wilcox alone is averaging 8.4 points and pulling down 5.3 boards, while Smith is averaging 6.6 and 4.5, respectively. The trade is still somewhat of a gamble for the Hornets, as Chris Paul and Tyson Chandler formed a lethal combination when both were healthy.

It's reasonable to believe that the move was made for financial reasons as much as anything else, as both Wilcox and Smith are free agents at the end of the season, while Chandler is owed basically $26 million over the next two years. This could very well be the move that gets Thunder GM Sam Presti serious consideration for Executive of the Year is Chandler plays well for them. They got a starting center for almost nothing, and there are only two or three teams in the league who wouldn't give up a kidney for a center like Chandler.
