Cleveland Cavaliers forward Ben Wallace received 14 stitches in his right forearm in a freak accident over All-Star Weekend, the team announced Tuesday.

Wallace was injured while playing catch with a football in Richmond, Virginia. Wallace attended college at Virginia Union. He traveled back to Cleveland Monday and was also treated at Cleveland Clinic Sports Health Tuesday for the removal of additional glass pieces from his arm. He is listed as questionable for Wednesday's game against Toronto.

The Cavaliers also announced guard Sasha Pavlovic, who has been out since February 9 with a sprained right ankle, had his cast removed and will now remain in an aircast walking boot.Pavlovic will continue to rehab in Cleveland. In addition, Cleveland updated the status of guard Delonte West, who suffered a fractured right wrist on January 15. West participated in the majority of Tuesday's practice. He will travel with the team to Toronto and is listed as doubtful for Wednesday.

The Boston Celtics freed up a roster spot Tuesday, trading veteran guard Sam Cassell to the Sacramento Kings for cash considerations and a future second-round pick.

Cassell, who has been a cheerleader on the end of the Boston bench and yet to play in a game this season, is making $1.26 million on a contract that expires after this season. By moving Cassell, the defending world champions cleared a roster spot to make another deal before Thursday's trade deadline.

Cassell, 38, known as a clutch performer earlier in his career, saw time at backup point guard last season as the Celtics won their first title since 1986. In 993 career games, Cassell has averaged 15.8 points and 6.0 assists.

Nearly a month after a scary incident, Charlotte Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace is expected back for Tuesday's game at Orlando. The Bobcats have been without Wallace - their third-leading scorer - since January 27, when he was hospitalized following Charlotte's 117-110 double overtime win against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Wallace was elbowed by Lakers center Andrew Bynum late in the fourth quarter and suffered a broken rib and partially collapsed lung. Out of the lineup for the last seven games, Wallace spent two days in a hospital as doctors inserted a tube into his left lung. He traveled back to Charlotte via bus because he was not cleared to fly.

If Wallace, who is averaging 16.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game this season, starts against the Magic, Vladimir Radmanovic likely would be the first player off the bench. Radmanovic has averaged 17 points in two games for the Bobcats since being acquired from the Lakers on February 7. The Bobcats also hope to have guard Raja Bell, who has missed the last three games with a strained groin, back in the lineup. Bell is averaging 13.6 points per game.

The Houston Rockets open a five-game homestand coming out of the All-Star break, but they will do so without Tracy McGrady.

McGrady will sit due to a nagging left knee injury as the Rockets welcome the New Jersey Nets to the Toyota Center on Tuesday.

The seven-time All-Star has missed 18 games this season because of problems with the knee, which was surgically repaired during the offseason.

San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili will miss Tuesday's game against the New York Knicks due to a sore right ankle.

The ankle, not the same one that Ginobili underwent surgery prior to the season, has been bothering him since before the All-Star break. Ginobili is scheduled to undergo tests, which will determine if he will rejoin the team in time for Thursday's game at Detroit.

In 38 games, Ginobili is averaging 16.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists. San Antonio (35-16) holds a four-game lead over Houston in the Southwest Division.

Andrew Bynum is expected to be sidelined six to 10 more weeks because of a torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee, which keeps Gasol and Odom in the forefront of every discussion if the Lakers want to stay ahead of the Celtics and Cavaliers.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are trying to adjust to life without their best player.

The Timberwolves will go for their first win since Al Jefferson was lost for the season when they visit the lowly Washington Wizards on Tuesday.

Jefferson, who was averaging 23.1 points and 11 rebounds, had his season come to an end on February 8 when he tore his ACL against the New Orleans Hornets. The 24-year-old center was one of three players in the NBA averaging better than 20 and 10. Minnesota looked like it was picking up steam over the last month and a half, going 11-8 since January 1 after beginning the year 4-23. But the loss of Jefferson dealt a huge blow to the young team.

After a week full of rumors surrounding Terry Porter's job security, the Phoenix Suns finally ended his brief tenure with the team on Monday.

The Suns fired Porter and replaced the first-year head coach with assistant Alvin Gentry, who will guide them against the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday.

The Suns went 28-23 under Porter, who signed a three-year contract in June. "I hired Terry because I believed he would be able to provide the balance our team needed in order to perform at a very high level," Suns general manager Steve Kerr said. "Unfortunately, the transition from last season to this one proved to be very difficult, and we have not played to our potential."

Milwaukee (26-29) at Detroit (27-24) 7:30 p.m. EST
The Detroit Pistons were not playing like an Eastern Conference contender prior to the All-Star break, but hope to change that Tuesday. Detroit will aim to sweep the season series against the Milwaukee Bucks when the teams meet at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

The acquisition of All-Star Allen Iverson early in the season was supposed to return the Pistons to the top of the East. Detroit has yet to come into form, however, and limped to the break losing three straight and 12 of 17 games. Iverson scored 28 points in Detroit's final game before the All-Star festivities, a 99-95 loss against the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday. The Pistons have won all three meetings with the Bucks this season, including a 126-121 overtime win on February 7 - Detroit's last win.

Milwaukee has been bit by the injury bug all season, but things went from bad to worse just prior to the break. Michael Redd is out for the season with a knee injury, Andrew Bogut will miss at least seven more weeks with a back injury, and Luke Ridnour broke his right thumb on February 6 and will be out at least three more weeks. The Bucks have managed to win four of six despite the injuries behind the emergence of Charlie Villanueva and Ramon Sessions. Villanueva is averaging 23.5 points in his last 12 games while Sessions has added 20.0 per contest over his last nine, including a 44-point performance against the Pistons in their last meeting. Sessions had 15 points and a season-high 17 assists in Milwaukee's last game, a 122-110 win over Indiana on Wednesday.

Pistons Return to Meijer
The Pistons have teamed up once again with Meijer to present “Pistons Days at Meijer” - the closest Pistons experience you’ll find outside The Palace of Auburn Hills.

The Pistons’ mascot, Hooper, and members from Palace Patrol and Automotion will visit eight different Meijer locations in Southeastern Michigan during the 2008-09 season. Meijer shoppers also will have a chance to win Pistons posters, jerseys, and even tickets to an upcoming game by spinning the Pistons Prize Wheel.

To complete the experience, a Pistons player will be there to meet fans and sign autographs. Fans can pick up a free autograph card or bring a personal item. To keep the line moving, fans are asked to refrain from requesting multiple autographs or a posed picture. Specific information about players, dates and locations for “Pistons Days at Meijer” will be posted on Pistons.com in advance of the appearance date.

Pistons standing pat?: Say goodbye to the thought of seeing Amare Stoudemire in a Pistons jersey (at least before 2010).ESPN.com's Mark Stein is reporting that Phoenix is now most likely to hold onto the four-time All-Star. From his story: "I got the impression today that [the Suns] are standing pat," said one source with knowledge of the team's thinking. Said another source close to the situation: "That is very accurate." Here’s what I don’t get. I thought the Suns were desperate to get under the luxury tax. Wasn't that the entire point of shopping Stoudemire so aggressively? After eating fired-coach Terry Porter's contract, doesn't that just make them more likely to want to cut costs?

Stein addresses that: “The financial concerns that prompted Phoenix to shop Stoudemire in the first place have only become more serious with Porter's dismissal, since Sarver was forced to eat an estimated $4 million in guaranteed salary due to Porter over the next two seasons. In the Suns' discussions with numerous teams, however, sources say they were never close to landing the desired combination of salary-cap relief, young talent and draft picks to convince them to part with Stoudemire, who just played in his fourth All-Star Game at 26 and ranks as the league's most successful comeback case from the dreaded microfracture knee surgery.” One rumor that could be worrisome for the Pistons popped up today. The Bulls might turn their sights to Chris Bosh, the player the Pistons are assumed to most covet with their salary-cap space in the next two summers.

The only problem with this scenario in the Chicago Sun-Times is that it still involves Stoudemire: "The rumored swap would send Stoudemire to Toronto and land the Phoenix Suns a package of players and draft picks from the Bulls, likely to include Drew Gooden and his expiring $7.2 million contract, Tyrus Thomas and a first-round pick.” Joe Dumars can't let that happen, can he?

The Pistons president sat down with Keith Langlois, the Pistons in-house writer, last week. And in the long Q-and-A, one thing stood out to me. Dumars pretty much said what has become obvious – this season has, at least to a degree, been sacrificed for the future. His quote, which comes in the context of talking about making significant changes: “If that means we have to go through some struggles this year, as we have, then, OK, I’m willing to do that. I’m willing to go through these struggles to get to where we need to get.

I don’t like it. It’s gut-wrenching. We haven’t lost here. The first time in eight or nine years we’re losing games that we ordinarily have not lost. That’s tough for all of us to swallow. It’s especially hard for me to swallow. It’s hard to wake up and face losing to teams that you just haven’t lost to and all of a sudden you wake up and it’s another L. I don’t want anybody to get it wrong, that we’re OK with losing, because we’re not. It’s harder than hell to sit here and lose. But it would be even harder to lose if we waited and waited and waited and there was no prospect to get better.

That means that unless something truly spectacular lands on Dumars' lap this week, you can bet he'll hang onto this roster, knowing how valuable his upcoming salary cap relief will be.And that means ... probably not much good news for the rest of this season. Unless you think putting Antonio McDyess back into the starting line-up is the magic elixir. Raise of hands?

The Cleveland Cavaliers are trying to switch gears and make a surprise trade. After being rebuffed with their Amare Stoudemire offer, the Cavs may be on the verge of acquiring Antawn Jamison for Wally Szczerbiak's expiring contract. A move that might push the Cavs past the Celtics in challenging for a NBA Title.

Vince Carter is also getting a lot of attention. The most serious talks coming between the Houston Rockets and New Jersey Nets. If Tracy McGrady was healthy, a deal sending T-Mac to the Nets for Vince Carter and Trenton Hassell would already have been consummated.

There are rumors that Amare Stoudemire has been taken off the trading block, and there is a rumor that suggests that there may be talks about a 3-way trade that would send Amare to Toronto, Chris Bosh to Chicago and Drew Gooden(expiring contract) Tyrus Thomas and drafts picks to Phoenix.

Ed (Saginaw, MI): Hi Chad. Anything going on is Piston land? Seems pretty quite. Is Joey D just going to stand pat with the Pistons reeling?

Chad Ford: Sounds pretty quiet in Detroit. I think Joe D is content to have lots of cap room this summer and then make a few plays then. With the Thunder making a deal for Chandler, Detroit will have the most cap space of any team. They'll be in the drivers seat.

Ford is correct, the Pistons will have the most cap space this Summer, as things stand now. The players available in 2009 will be nowhere near the type of superstars that are going to become free agents in 2010. Of course we don't really know if the players who are in line to become free agents in 2010 will end up in that category. Players can sign extensions starting July 1st, and if a team trades for a player like Chris Bosh or Amare Stoudemire, they may already have an agreement with that player to sign an extension this Summer.

If Joe Dumars passes over a chance to obtain an All-Star, or superstar, player before the trade deadline, he may face a lot of negative reaction from fans this Summer if he cannot land a top tier free agent.

When Joe traded Corliss Williamson for cap space after the Pistons won the NBA Title in 2004, Dumars said it was a move made so he could keep his core players together. One of the reasons Joe gave for trading Darko Milicic and Carlos Arroyo near the trade deadline in 2006 was so he could re-sign Ben Wallace in the Summer. Joe has even suggested the reason he traded Nazr Mohammed and Carlos Delfino for cap space was to sign better players during the free agent period. None of those things happened, but Joe was given a pass because of the sucess the Pistons were having.
