Nets F Williams arrested at BC
New Jersey Nets forward Sean Williams was arrested this past weekend at Boston College for allegedly violating a no-trespassing order, police said. A former player at Boston College, Williams was arrested by campus police shortly before the Eagles played Duke on Sunday. According to reports, Williams resisted arrest.

The no-trespassing issue was issued to Williams in May 2008. The Boston Globe reported that BC police banned Williams - who previously was arrested for marijuana possession at the school in 2005 - from being on campus after an officer detected the odor of marijuana in a vehicle near him. Williams was kicked off the BC team in 2007.

The New York Daily News reported that Williams was invited to Sunday's game by Eagles coach Al Skinner after he called the school seeking permission to attend. Williams posted $40 bond but failed to appear for arraignment Tuesday. The arraignment has been rescheduled for March 5. The Nets had no comment on Williams' arrest.

While the Blazers acquire Michael Ruffin in a three-way trade with the Chicago Bulls, sending Ike Diogu to the Sacramento Kings, the move is more about this coming offseason for Portland than anything else.

The Blazers gain a $3 million trade exception, which they can use for one calendar year. "This gives us cushion this summer to make a move," head coach Nate McMillan said before Portland hosts the Memphis Grizzlies at the Rose Garden.

Ruffin – who has yet to play in a game for the Bulls this season – gives Portland another big body, who could provide some relief until Greg Oden returns from his knee injury. McMillan said Ruffin had been practicing, while Oden will not play tonight against Memphis. As for Diogu, McMillan had a fondness for the power forward but admits there simply wasn't enough playing time to go around. "I like Ike. We got him a year too late," McMillan said, knowing Diogu would have had a more significant role last season with Oden sidelined.

Randolph Suspended: In case you missed it, zach Randolph popped Luis Amundson a good one in the first quarter of the Los Angeles Clippers' game against the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night. Amundson is known as a pesky defender and apparently Randolph decided to swat the fly. Amundson was able to absord the contact by giving ground, otherwise it would have been a nasty blow, indeed.

Randolph was immediately ejected, of course, and the league has handed down a two-game suspension. He'll miss tonight's game (also against the Suns) and Sunday's game against the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Illini (21-6, 9-5) were no better, shooting 30 percent (15-for-50) and committing 15 turnovers. Chester Frazier and Trent Meacham had seven points each to lead Illinois.

Arkansas (13-11, 1-10) was led by Courtney Fortson, who returned from a one-game suspension to score 17 points, all in the second half. Rotnei Clarke also scored 17.

The Tigers (22-4, 10-1 Southeastern Conference), in the Top 25 this week for the first time in more than two years, trailed by 18 points in the first half, but they used an 11-1 run in the final minutes to win their seventh straight.

Cole Aldrich took over during a key stretch in the second half and finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds, helping Kansas (No. 18 ESPN/USA Today, No. 15 AP) extend their winning streak at Allen Fieldhouse to 38 games with a 72-55 win over Iowa State on Wednesday night.

Sherron Collins added 22 points and six assists for Kansas (21-5, 10-1 Big 12), which overcame 18 mostly-sloppy turnovers to reach 10 conference wins for the 15th straight season. The Jayhawks made up for the offensive lapses with another superb defensive game, holding Iowa State to 32 percent shooting.

Craig Brackens had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Jamie Vanderbeken added 15 points for the Cyclones, who have lost eight of nine overall.

Tyler Hansbrough scored 27 points to help third-ranked North Carolina beat North Carolina State 89-80 Wednesday night.

Danny Green added 19 points for the Tar Heels (24-2, 10-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who pulled away in the second half to win their 10th straight game. North Carolina shot 55 percent for the game to improve to 12-1 against its nearby rival since Roy Williams took over at his alma mater before the 2003-04 season.

Javi Gonzalez scored 18 points to lead the Wolfpack (14-10, 4-7 ACC), who shot 54 percent but couldn't keep pace with the Tar Heels after halftime.

Terrence Williams had 17 points, eight assists and six rebounds as No. 7 Louisville overcame a shaky first half and pulled away for a 94-76 victory over Providence on Wednesday night.

Edgar Sosa led the Cardinals (20-5, 11-2 Big East) with 18 points, Samardo Samuels added 17 and Earl Clark had 13 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Louisville moved into a three-way tie for second place in the conference with No. 4 Pittsburgh and No. 10 Marquette behind No. 1 Connecticut.

Providence (16-10, 8-6) was hoping to put a signature win on its NCAA tournament resume, but had no answer in the second half. Jonathan Kale, Sharaud Curry and Weyinmi Efejuku had 15 points each for the Friars, who couldn't sustain the strong shooting that carried them to a slim halftime lead.

Avery Smith had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Wisconsin-Milwaukee appeared to benefit from a clock malfunction in the closing seconds of a 63-60 victory over No. 21 Butler on Wednesday night.

With 5.9 seconds left, Butler's Gordon Hayward passed the ball to Willie Veasley behind the baseline and the clock appeared to start prematurely. Veasley passed the ball to Zach Hahn who never got a shot off before time expired.

Officials looked at a replay, but said they couldn't determine if the clock started early and ruled the game was over, giving the Bulldogs (22-4, 13-3 Horizon League) their first consecutive losses in more than three years -- a span of 111 games.

Pistons' best move: Stay put
Contrary to the wishes of a restless fan base, it would appear that the Pistons’ brass isn’t planning any late-hour surprises at tomorrow’s NBA trade deadline. From president Joe Dumars today in an e-mail: “We intend to keep all of our options open going forward.”And this from coach Michael Curry, asked whether he expects the team to make a deal today: “From what I’m hearing, I don’t think so. You never know.” Doesn’t sound like the phone lines are burning up in Auburn Hills. Unless something changes before 3 p.m. tomorrow, you will be stuck with this team that has won five of its past 18 games and is in danger of missing the Eastern Conference playoffs.I won’t tell you that you were wrong to clamor for a move, but there are several good reasons not to trade — even for the franchise that likely will see its streak of six consecutive appearances in the Eastern finals end this season.

First is common sense: There might not be a trade partner: After intense speculation that he was on the trading block, multiple reports are saying the Phoenix Suns are considering keeping power forward Amare Stoudemire. That makes sense, since they fired from former Pistons assistant Terry Porter on Monday and replaced him with former Pistons head coach Alvin Gentry. You can imagine the conversation when they told Gentry he got the job. Suns: “Hey, the job’s all yours, and we want you to take us back to the high-flying days we used to have going around here.” Gentry: “Uh, but you’re trading my best high-flying guy?” Suns: “Umm, good point.” There’s talk that the Raptors are open to trading power forward Chris Bosh, but GM Brian Colangelo told the Toronto media last weekend after acquiring Shawn Marion from the Heat for Jermaine O’Neal that he was going to try to keep his roster together.
The second reason for the Pistons not to deal: They will have more flexibility than most teams in the off-season. With the contracts of Allen Iverson and Rasheed Wallace expiring, Dumars will have about $20 million to spend on free agents, with big money tied up only in Rip Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince. It’s not a secret that a big reason Dumars traded point guard Chauncey Billups to Denver for Iverson was his expiring contract. With free-agent power forwards like Carlos Boozer (this summer), Bosh and Stoudemire (both summer of 2010), Dumars is positioned to throw a lot of money toward infusing the frontline with a youth movement the next two summers.

The third reason not to deal is the economy: Franchises want to dump, not take on, salaries because owners are uncertain of financial futures — especially with commissioner David Stern announcing at All-Star weekend that he expects the $58.6-million salary cap to drop slightly next season. There’s a lot of belt-tightening going on. One league executive said his scouts have been instructed to try to make multiple visits while in an area to save on flight costs. The economic realities could create a buyer’s market, and that should be a boon to Dumars — who has a stack of cash. While you might not want to hear it, sometimes the best move to be made is to make no move.

Former Piston Ben Wallace explains bizarre injury
Like Allen Iverson, he's cut his trademark hair. Ben Wallace’s biggest disappointment? He didn’t make the catch. Wallace explained .com Wednesday how he cut his right arm crashing through a car window during a street football game in Richmond, Va., over the All-Star break. Wallace needed 14 stitches to close the cut, then had more glass removed from his arm at the Cleveland Clinic the following day. Wallace was not in the starting lineup tonight at Toronto. Anderson Varejao replaced Wallace, while guard Terence Kinsey returned from a sprained ankle to start for Cleveland. Toronto was without All-Star forward Chris Bosh (right knee) for the fifth consecutive game, while newly acquired Shawn Marion made his Raptors debut. Cleveland’s best defensive interior player, Wallace is averaging 3.1 points and 6.7 rebounds this season. Asked who won the collision with the car, Wallace said he did, then paused. “I guess,” he said. “The window didn’t bleed. I don’t think it was made to bleed.”

The play didn’t go down as a reception, either. “That was the biggest disappointment,” Wallace said. “I dropped the ball. That’s good D.” Wallace needed 14 stitches to close a cut on the outside of his elbow and had a series of small cuts on the inside of his forearm. “I didn’t know what to expect,” he said. “It scared me more than anything. You hear the glass pop and see all the blood droplets.” Wallace has been told not to lift weights for the next little while as the cut heals but has no other restrictions. “The movement and everything is good, it’s just sore sometimes,” he said. “Sometimes the stitches feel like they’re pulling. As the days go on, it’ll loosen up a little bit. There’s no real structural damage to ligaments or nerves or tendons.”

With the Cavaliers leading the Central Division and chasing Boston for the Eastern Conference lead, Wallace said injured guard Delonte West warned his teammates before the break to be careful on their midseason holiday. “Delonte told everybody, ’When you go on this break, don’t do anything that’s going to stop you from coming back and being with the team. Be careful, get a couple of workouts in and just enjoy the break,’” Wallace said “I should have taken his advice.” It was an eventful All-Star break for Wallace, who also cut his hair, ending a near-decade stretch in braids for a shorter look. “Nine or 10 years, that’s a long time to be living,” Wallace said of his braids. “I rocked it until the wheels fell off.”

Charles Barkley: 'No excuses' as he returns to TNT on Thursday night
Charles Barkley’s six-week exile from TNT’s studio show after his drunken-driving arrest ends at 8 Thursday night, just in time for the Pistons-San Antonio game. “This is just my bad, no excuses,” Barkley said in an NBA.com interview. “I think that a DUI is unacceptable. That can’t happen and I’ve got to challenge other people, not just celebrities or jocks. You have to really think before getting behind the wheel after you’ve been drinking.”

Barkley said he would start using a driver when he goes out and likely undergo alcohol counseling — and even quit drinking if that’s what the professionals tell him. “I let so many people down,” he said. “It just sucks watching the shows and not being there. I screwed this up.”

Thunder reject Chandler, trade off
The New Orleans Hornets decided to trade Tyson Chandler to clear some cap space and add depth to the frontcourt. They'll have to go back to the drawing board.

The Hornets announced on Wednesday that the Oklahoma City Thunder did not medically clear the center and therefore rescinded the trade. Chandler would have gone to the Thunder for forwards Chris Wilcox and Joe Smith. "We welcome Tyson back with open arms," Hornets general manager Jeff Bower said in a statement. "We went into this trade to garner more frontcourt depth to add to our team as we continue our push towards the playoffs. We expect Tyson and the rest of our big guys to step up to the challenge."

Chandler, who is averaging 8.8 points and 8.3 rebounds this season, has been bothered by foot problems and has played in only 32 games. He is set to make $12.3 million next season.

As hopeful contenders around the NBA clamor to make themselves better at the trade deadline, the San Antonio Spurs would gladly settle for an acquisition from within. First, though, they'll need Manu Ginobili's ankle to comply. The Spurs will likely be without their star guard for a second straight game when they look to avoid a third consecutive loss for the first time since early November on Thursday night against the reeling Detroit Pistons. Ginobili has had a variety of minor injuries throughout his seven-year NBA career, missing at least five games in every season. Offseason surgery on his left ankle forced him to miss the first 12 games in 2008-09, and he began experiencing pain in his right ankle prior to the All-Star break. The NBA's reigning sixth man of the year didn't travel to New York on Tuesday as the Spurs (35-17) continued their eight-game rodeo trip, staying in San Antonio to undergo tests on the ankle.

The Spurs haven't released specific information about the injury, but it's unlikely Ginobili will be available for Thursday's game - the league's first after the 3 p.m. EST trading deadline - or the finale of the trip Saturday in Washington. San Antonio, which was believed to have interest in New Jersey's Vince Carter and Milwaukee's Richard Jefferson, could have used some help with Ginobili sidelined against the Knicks. Tim Duncan missed a potential game-winning shot at the end of regulation, then New York took control in overtime, winning 112-107. "I got some shots to go down and started feeling good about it," said Duncan, who had 19 of his 26 points after halftime. "I wish the last one would've gone, too, but such is life." While Duncan's last-second shot didn't fall, Tony Parker couldn't get anything to go down all night. Parker, one of the top shooters among guards in the league at 48.7 percent, was 5-of-20 and finished with 14 points. Another loss in Detroit would give San Antonio its first three-game skid since opening the season 0-3.The Spurs had their three stars healthy for their first matchup against Detroit (27-25) this season Dec. 2, but like many of their recent meetings with the Pistons, it didn't matter.

Rasheed Wallace and Allen Iverson each scored 19 points, and San Antonio let a fourth-quarter lead slip away in an 89-77 loss - its third straight and sixth in eight games to Detroit - that left coach Gregg Popovich unhappy. "The most disturbing thing is that we were very soft," Popovich said. "I think Detroit intimidated us. It was really sad to watch in that respect. I thought we totally folded to their aggressive play." The Pistons, though, haven't been intimidating anyone with their play lately. They've lost four in a row and are 5-13 since Jan. 10. Detroit is 14-14 at The Palace after going 34-7 last season and has been dreadful there recently. A 92-86 loss to the Bucks on Tuesday was the Pistons' seventh in eight home games. "You are supposed to play your best basketball at home, and we obviously aren't doing that," said Iverson, who had 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting. "I don't think there's any focus. "It's easy to be focused when you are on the road and have 20,000 of their fans cheering against you, but you can't come home and expect your fans to win the games for you. They help, but you've got to play." While Rodney Stuckey has been struggling lately in his role as a starter, averaging 9.0 points on 33.3 percent shooting in his last five games, Richard Hamilton is thriving off the bench. Hamilton is averaging 26.2 points over his last five.

Kidd opened the game with three early 3-pointers and scored 23 points, one shy of his season high. He also had 10 assists and a quick-handed steal against Devin Harris -- the youngster he was dealt for -- during the game-breaking third quarter

The Mavericks improved to 7-2 since Kidd was put in charge of the offense. This one was especially impressive as four starters cracked 20 points, and all five were in double figures. Josh Howard had 24 points and 10 rebounds, Dirk Nowitzki had 23 points and nine rebounds, and Erick Dampier scored 10.

Harris scored 41 points in a 24-point victory over the Mavs earlier this season and was only a few days removed from his first All-Star appearance, but he didn't have the same zing this time. He went more than 20 minutes before scoring and finished with 18 points on 5-of-18 shooting. Hassell started but didn't score in 20 minutes, missing his only shot. Vince Carter started 6-of-8, but missed his last 10 shots, failing to score in the second half. He finished with 15 points. Brook Lopez had 16 points and Jarvis Hayes scored 15 on 6-of-6 shooting. Keyon Dooling scored 14.

Billups scored 17 of his 22 points in the third quarter and rallied Denver back from a 16-point deficit to lead the Nuggets to their third straight win, 101-89 over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night.

Carmelo Anthony had 26 points and 14 rebounds, and Nene scored 17 for the Northwest Division leaders. Denver looked sluggish in the first half and its poor shooting seemed indicative of a team coming off a lengthy All-Star break.

Billups got the better of Andre Miller in the battle of the veteran point guards. Miller gave him a good push with 17 points through the first 2-plus quarters, but strained his right calf with about 7 1/2 minutes left in the third. He'll have an MRI on Thursday. His injury, combined with Andre Iguodala's foul trouble, derailed the Sixers game in the second half.
