Dice Back in the Starting Lineup
Antonio McDyess enjoys his role coming off the Detroit Pistons' bench. But he enjoys winning even more, which is what the Detroit Pistons (27-24) hope will happen more often now that McDyess will be in the starting lineup presumably for the rest of the season. McDyess will take the place of Amir Johnson. McDyess, who started 78 games last season, has been vocal about his preference to remain a reserve. However, Pistons coach Michael Curry said it was not that difficult to convince McDyess that his play was needed more on the first unit. "It was easy," Curry said. "Dice is easy. He wants to win. He'll do whatever you ask. We sat down and talked basketball. We talked about things we can do team-wise to be better. He realized this is one of those things. He welcomed it."

More than any other Pistons starter, Rasheed Wallace should benefit from McDyess' transition. "Another veteran who takes pride in defense," Wallace said. "Now, I won't have to cover as much floor. Hopefully, it'll help out." McDyess provides the his team with another big man who can knock down perimeter shots, which should force teams' big men to play farther away from the basket. That should open up more opportunities in the paint for Allen Iverson and Rodney Stuckey to score while driving to the basket.

Detroit forward Tayshaun Prince said the insertion of McDyess into the starting lineup should help. But it remains to be seen how this will impact the Pistons' bench. "When he's in the starting lineup, who is going to be that guy coming off the bench from a big standpoint? There are good ways and bad ways you can look at it," Prince said. Depending on the matchup, the Pistons will look to Johnson, Jason Maxiell or Kwame Brown as the first big men off the bench. "Max, he has been pretty good off the bench in his role," Curry said. "Amir can be better playing against second-line guys now, and I still like Kwame against some bigs. I think we're more stable starting off. And hopefully, we're better defensively starting off, and offensively.

Tyson Chandler fails physical, traded voided, returns to Hornets
February 18, 2009 · Filed Under New Orleans Hornets, News, OKC Thunder
The New Orleans Hornets announced today that center Tyson Chandler will return to the Hornets after the original trade to the Oklahoma City Thunder was rescinded. The Thunder’s medical staff failed to clear Chandler after the physical. “We were pleased to add Tyson to the Thunder roster,” said Oklahoma City Thunder Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti . “During the course of the physical examination and outside consultations some questions arose that gave us cause for concern. We felt that this course of action was the best for our organization.” “We welcome Tyson back with open arms,” said Hornets General Manager Jeff Bower. “We went into this trade to garner more frontcourt depth to add to our team as we continue our push towards the playoffs. We expect Tyson and the rest of our big guys to step up to the challenge.”

Forward Joe Smith, center Chris Wilcox and the draft rights to center Devon Hardin will immediately rejoin the Thunder.

Chandler is averaging 8.8 points and 8.3 rebounds this season through 32 games (all starts). He averaged a career-best 11.8 points to go along with 11.7 rebounds in 79 games (all starts) for the Hornets last season. Chandler will re-join the Hornets in Los Angeles before their game against the Lakers on Friday.

For Pistons, time to snap out of it is now
Pistons need to win during stretch against contenders if they are to stay in playoff picture.
The way Michael Curry sees it, there's only one way for the Pistons to extricate themselves from this current, potentially season-crushing malaise. Start fighting. "That's what you always do when you are in any tough situation, you go out and fight," Curry said after a short practice Wednesday. "In all my experiences in basketball, not just in the NBA, the way you get out of tough situations is to go out and fight hard so that at the end of the day, at least you can say you played harder than your opponent."

Truth is, if the Pistons don't fight any harder than they have during this four-game losing streak, they could find themselves outside the playoff picture. "That's crazy," Richard Hamilton said. "That's kind of insane to me. It doesn't do anything but make you think it's crazy. You look at our record (27-25) and see the type of talent we have on this team and it doesn't make sense. But the season isn't over." Detroit is tied for sixth in the East. It has two more victories than eighth-place Milwaukee and three more than ninth-place New Jersey. And now comes a stretch of games Tayshaun Prince called the "toughest of our season." Starting tonight, the Pistons face seven playoff contenders -- the San Antonio Spurs, then on the road against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, New Orleans Hornets, Orlando Magic and Boston Celtics before coming home to play the Denver Nuggets. Safe to say it's put up or shut up time for the Pistons. "It doesn't matter who we play," Curry said. "We've played really well against the elite teams and we've played some our worst basketball against the teams with the fewest victories. We aren't going to always play at a really high level, but the least we can do is compete. That's all I am asking. Let's just be aggressive and play harder than our opponent."

Curry is turning to his youngest starter, Rodney Stuckey, to establish that aggressive tone. "We have to figure a way to get Stuckey on track," Curry said. "He ignites everybody else. ... He spends a lot of time making sure everybody else is OK on the court, but his natural instinct is to be aggressive. We just want him to be himself." The last five games, Stuckey has averaged nine points, had one more assist (12) than turnovers (11) and shot 33 percent (17 for 51). "Rodney is the key to our team," Curry said. "I am not blaming him for nothing. Don't write that we are blaming him. It's just that we need him to play well. Other guys can play well but it doesn't affect everybody else. When Stuckey plays well, everybody plays well." In the past, the Pistons have relished a stretch of games like this. You wonder, though, if this team has the stomach for it. "This is what we need," Allen Iverson said. "... We need to beat quality teams. We need that challenge. We need somebody that's going to come in here and want to kick our butts all over the basketball court, just to see how we respond." Newsflash: The Pistons need to beat anyand all teams. The challenge is to stop the free fall toward lottery-land. The challenge is to start winning and restore their confidence and maybe, eventually, their credibility as a potential contender. Either now or never.

As hopeful contenders around the NBA clamor to make themselves better at the trade deadline, the San Antonio Spurs would gladly settle for an acquisition from within. First, though, they'll need Manu Ginobili's ankle to comply. The Spurs will likely be without their star guard for a second straight game when they look to avoid a third consecutive loss for the first time since early November on Thursday night against the reeling Detroit Pistons. Ginobili has had a variety of minor injuries throughout his seven-year NBA career, missing at least five games in every season. Offseason surgery on his left ankle forced him to miss the first 12 games in 2008-09, and he began experiencing pain in his right ankle prior to the All-Star break. The NBA's reigning sixth man of the year didn't travel to New York on Tuesday as the Spurs (35-17) continued their eight-game rodeo trip, staying in San Antonio to undergo tests on the ankle.

The Spurs haven't released specific information about the injury, but it's unlikely Ginobili will be available for Thursday's game - the league's first after the 3 p.m. EST trading deadline - or the finale of the trip Saturday in Washington. San Antonio, which was believed to have interest in New Jersey's Vince Carter and Milwaukee's Richard Jefferson, could have used some help with Ginobili sidelined against the Knicks. Tim Duncan missed a potential game-winning shot at the end of regulation, then New York took control in overtime, winning 112-107. "I got some shots to go down and started feeling good about it," said Duncan, who had 19 of his 26 points after halftime. "I wish the last one would've gone, too, but such is life." While Duncan's last-second shot didn't fall, Tony Parker couldn't get anything to go down all night. Parker, one of the top shooters among guards in the league at 48.7 percent, was 5-of-20 and finished with 14 points. Another loss in Detroit would give San Antonio its first three-game skid since opening the season 0-3.The Spurs had their three stars healthy for their first matchup against Detroit (27-25) this season Dec. 2, but like many of their recent meetings with the Pistons, it didn't matter.

Rasheed Wallace and Allen Iverson each scored 19 points, and San Antonio let a fourth-quarter lead slip away in an 89-77 loss - its third straight and sixth in eight games to Detroit - that left coach Gregg Popovich unhappy. "The most disturbing thing is that we were very soft," Popovich said. "I think Detroit intimidated us. It was really sad to watch in that respect. I thought we totally folded to their aggressive play." The Pistons, though, haven't been intimidating anyone with their play lately. They've lost four in a row and are 5-13 since Jan. 10. Detroit is 14-14 at The Palace after going 34-7 last season and has been dreadful there recently. A 92-86 loss to the Bucks on Tuesday was the Pistons' seventh in eight home games. "You are supposed to play your best basketball at home, and we obviously aren't doing that," said Iverson, who had 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting. "I don't think there's any focus. "It's easy to be focused when you are on the road and have 20,000 of their fans cheering against you, but you can't come home and expect your fans to win the games for you. They help, but you've got to play." While Rodney Stuckey has been struggling lately in his role as a starter, averaging 9.0 points on 33.3 percent shooting in his last five games, Richard Hamilton is thriving off the bench. Hamilton is averaging 26.2 points over his last five.

Jermaine O'Neal was hurt in his first game with the Miami Heat midway through the third quarter Wednesday night after getting cut near his right eye.

O'Neal was struck by the Minnesota Timberwolves' Mike Miller, who was called for a charging foul. O'Neal stayed down for a moment, then was helped into the Heat locker room, dabbing a towel at his face in an effort to control bleeding. The Heat said he was getting X-rays. He returned with 4:22 left in the fourth quarter.

Less than a minute after O'Neal got hurt, Heat forward James Jones joined his former Indiana teammate in the locker room with an injured right hand. X-rays on Jones were negative, and the team diagnosed it as a bruise.

Cavs' Wallace explains arm injury, chops off braids
Ben Wallace's biggest disappointment? He didn't make the catch. Wallace explained Wednesday how he cut his right arm crashing through a car window during a street football game in Richmond, Va., over the All-Star break. Wallace needed 14 stitches to close the cut, then had more glass removed from his arm at the Cleveland Clinic the following day.

Wallace was not in the starting lineup Wednesday night at Toronto. Anderson Varejao replaced Wallace, while guard Terence Kinsey returned from a sprained ankle to start for Cleveland.

Wallace has been told not to lift weights for the next little while as the cut heals but has no other restrictions. "The movement and everything is good, it's just sore sometimes," he said. "Sometimes the stitches feel like they're pulling. As the days go on, it'll loosen up a little bit. There's no real structural damage to ligaments or nerves or tendons."

Pacers' Granger sprains right foot, to have MRI
Indiana scoring leader Danny Granger sprained his right foot early in the second quarter of the Pacers' game against Charlotte on Wednesday night.

The Pacers said he would not return to the game. He's scheduled to have an MRI on Thursday, leaving him in doubt for Indiana's game at Minnesota on Friday night. "Yeah, it's so painful," Granger said. "It's really painful. We don't exactly know what it is yet. "That last shot I took right before I left the game, it felt like something popped in my foot. I thought I had just pulled it. I ran down to the other end, and that's when I just walked to the bench and said, 'I've got something wrong.'"

Granger is the fourth Indiana player currently out of action due to injury or illness. Forward Mike Dunleavy is out with a sore right knee, center Jeff Foster has a sprained right ankle, and forward Josh McRoberts has the flu.
