Chandler fails physical, rejoins Hornets
The Oklahoma City Thunder rescinded their trade with the New Orleans, sending center Tyson Chandler back to the Hornets.

Chandler failed a physical Wednesday, and the Thunder backed out of the deal that sent Chris Wilcox, Joe Smith and second-round pick DeVon Hardin to New Orleans.

No specific reason was given as to why Chandler didn't pass the physical, but he missed the last 12 games before the All-Star break because of a sprained left ankle. "We were pleased to add Tyson to the Thunder roster," general manager Sam Presti said. "During the course of the physical examination and outside consultations some questions arose that gave us cause for concern. We felt that this course of action was the best for our organization."

The Deal That Wasn't: The Oklahoma City Thunder have rescinded their trade with the New Orleans, sending starting center Tyson Chandler back to the Hornets. Chandler failed a physical Wednesday, and the Thunder backed out of the deal that would have sent Chris Wilcox, Joe Smith and second-round pick DeVon Hardin to New Orleans.

Thunder Rescind Chandler Trade: The Oklahoma City Thunder have rescinded the trade that brought them Tyson Chandler from the New Orleans Hornets. The official word is that Chandler, who has been out nursing an ankle injury, failed his physical upon arrival in Oklahoma City.

New Orleans Hornets GM Jeff Bower says the team will "welcome Chandler back with open arms." HOOPSWORLD's Steve Kyler is in New Orleans tonight, with the hope being that we could get some interviews and photos of Chris Wilcox and Joe Smith, the newest members of the Hornets. The two didn't suit up, however, and were not made available to the media pre-game, as had been expected.

We now know that the Hornets were waiting for word from OKC that Chandler had passed his physical. It's expected that the Thunder will make a subsequent deal to move their highly-coveted front court players elsewhere, though it seems unlikely they would land a player of Chandler's caliber with so little time left between now and the trade deadline to work out the details.

Clippers F Ricky Davis ejected: Los Angeles Clippers forward Ricky Davis was ejected at the end of the third quarter during Wednesday's game against the Phoenix Suns for arguing with the referees.

Ricky Davis appeared to argue the call and was whistled for a technical foul. He refused to stop the debate and earned his second technical and the ejection. The 29-year-old forward finished with 10 points and four assists in just under 24 minutes.

Chandler fails physical, returns to New Orleans: Tyson Chandler isn't going anywhere after all. One day after being dealt to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a cost-cutting move for the New Orleans Hornets, the veteran center failed his physical, nullifying the deal that could have saved the Hornets $24.6 million over the last two seasons. In the deal, New Orleans acquired forwards Joe Smith and Chris Wilcox. Both of their contracts expire at the conclusion of the season.

The Thunder's medical staff could not clear Chandler to play after his physical on Wednesday and the trade was officially rescinded by Oklahoma City. He has been bothered by injuries this season, having missed the last 12 games with a sprained left ankle. "We welcome Tyson back with open arms," Hornets general manger Jeff Bower said. "We went into this trade to garner more frontcourt depth to add to our team as we continue our push toward the playoffs. We expect Tyson and the rest of our big guys to step up to the challenge."

Chandler, who has been the Hornets' best interior defender, can opt out of the final year of his deal before the start of the 2010-11 season. The 7-1 Chandler has been bothered by foot injuries all season and is averaging just 8.8 points and 8.3 rebounds in 32 games. He averaged 11.8 points and 11.7 rebounds last season. With Chandler in the lineup, the Hornets are 10 games over .500 this season. Without him, they are just a .500 club. New Orleans (32-20) currently is tied for fifth in the Western Conference. "We were pleased to add Tyson to the Thunder roster," Thunder general manager Sam Presti said. "During the course of the physical examination and outside consultations, some questions arose that gave us cause for concern. We felt that this course of action was the best for our organization."

Ex-Pistons coach Larry Brown starting to mellow: A kinder, gentler Larry Brown? Charlotte Bobcats guard Raja Bell sure thinks so. This is Bell’s second stint playing for Brown. Bell started his career with Brown and the Philadelphia 76ers from 2000 through 2002. “More mellow,” Bell said recently. “From the first couple of days (after Bell’s trade from Phoenix to Charlotte), I could see a different guy. When he needs to yell, he will. But in day-to-day demeanor, he’s a different guy.”

Bell says Brown is no less an authority figure. But he’s more collaborative, less strident, less prone to overreact and wear out players with constant criticism. An example: Brown was famous for riding his point guards, micromanaging how they play. He took the same approach during the preseason with the Bobcats’ Raymond Felton, only to find Felton would internalize the criticism and try too hard to please. So Brown adapted, rather than make Felton adapt. “I was on him early and I didn’t think that was particularly productive,” Brown said of Felton. “He’s a pretty incredible individual.” When that anecdote was passed on to Bell, his eyebrows raised. “I don’t think Larry would have given that benefit of the doubt” to his point guard in the past, Bell said.

Brown’s reaction to all this was interesting: He insists he hasn’t gone soft (and there’s plenty of evidence at practice that he hasn’t). However, he agrees he’s more flexible these days in his approach with players. “The biggest thing now is (how you coach) depends on the person you’re dealing with,” Brown said. “I used to treat 1-15 (on a roster) exactly alike. That’s how I was taught” by his mentor, former North Carolina coach Dean Smith. “That way, nobody knew who my favorite was.” Brown’s “favorite” when Bell played for the 76ers was point guard and former Michigan State star Eric Snow. Brown said he was extra hard on Snow to make sure everyone else knew they’d be held accountable. “He took that the right way,” Brown said of Snow’s reaction. And now? “Kids are all different,” Brown said. “The important thing is to get each of them better.”

Granger Leaves Game, MRI Set For Today
The Indiana Pacers' fading playoff hopes likely rest on an MRI to be done on All-Star forward Danny Granger's right foot later today.

Granger, who is sixth in the league in scoring, left in the second quarter of Wednesday's 103-94 loss to the Charlotte Bobcats with a sprained right foot.

"It's really painful," Granger said. "It's an unfortunate series of events. Hopefully I won't be out long."

76ers' Miller Will Have MRI On Calf Today: Only a few minutes into the third quarter, Miller missed a short jumper. While pursuing the long rebound, he extended to deflect the basketball. Somewhere in this offensive possession, Miller aggravated his calf muscle. He began limping back on defense, grabbing his leg between steps.

Miller attempted a few more seconds of play, but with 7 minutes, 23 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Lou Williams checked in for him. Miller, who led the team with 17 points, did not return. Officially, the Sixers are calling it a right-calf strain, saying Miller will have an MRI this morning to assess the injury.

Also official is the Sixers' record, now 27-26, slipping closer to .500 after two consecutive losses. The Nuggets improved to 37-17. "We'll have to see," was all Sixers coach Tony DiLeo would say about Miller's injury. "It had an effect on this game."

According to sources, Sacramento was expected to waive Sam Cassell after acquiring him from the Celtics Tuesday. But you shouldn’t expect to see him back in Boston as either a player or part of the coaching staff.

As long as he’s a free agent by March 1, then the Celtics could sign him up until the start of the postseason and have him eligible. But they would re-sign him only if injuries become a major problem, and it would mean a luxury tax hit for the Celts.

Tonight, the 76ers stirred a losing recipe: Andre Miller strained his right calf, Andre Iguodala fouled out, they hit less than a third of their shots, and they started the second half as if they needed a Red Bull.

Only a few minutes into the third quarter, Miller missed a short jumper. While pursuing the long rebound, he extended to deflect the basketball. Somewhere in this offensive possession, Miller aggravated his calf muscle. He began limping back on defense, grabbing his leg between steps.

Schedule gets tough for next seven games: Spurs, Cavs, Magic, Celtics await. The game against the Bucks was supposed to be a gimme. But after coming out of the All-Star break with a 92-86 loss to Milwaukee at the Palace on Tuesday night, the Pistons face a murderer's row stretch.

First is tonight's game against the Southwest Division-leading Spurs. Then comes a five-game, eight-day trip to Cleveland, Miami, New Orleans, Orlando and Boston. After a day off, ex-Piston Chauncey Billups and the Nuggets visit March 3.

All seven opponents have substantially better records than Detroit, and the stretch comes with the Pistons on a four-game losing streak and amid whispers of maybe not making the playoffs. "It's crazy. If you look at our record, we're now, what, 27-25," Rip Hamilton said Wednesday. "That's insane. "Especially losing the game last night when we know what type of schedule we have coming up. But we have to take one game at a time and hopefully get a win tomorrow."

STUCKEY'S WOES: Troubles continue for point guard Rodney Stuckey after his three-point, one-assist effort against the Bucks. He also fouled out. After averaging 14.3 points at one point, his scoring average has fallen to 13.4.

Stuckey is a source of concern for coach Michael Curry. "We got to find a way to get Stuckey on track," Curry said after Wednesday's practice. "He kind of ignites everybody else. I think he spends a lot of time trying to make sure everybody else is OK on the court, but his natural instinct is to be aggressive, and we just want him to be himself."

Curry said he talked to Stuckey about being more aggressive and to look for his shot more. Curry thinks it's part of the maturation process for the second-year player. "It can be overwhelming at times," Curry said. "It can be overwhelming for a coach, so you know it's overwhelming for a point guard."

MORE ZONE: The Pistons had shown it only sporadically this season, but they were able to get back in the game against the Bucks with a zone defense.

Curry doesn't like the zone, but with the team's struggles against dribble-penetration, Curry used the zone extensively for the first time this season. And it worked to some extent.

"We took them out of what they wanted to do," Hamilton said. "It kind of took them out of what they wanted to run. It's a good thing that you can use to change the game sometimes."
