Billups quote FTW!
ESPN’s Scoop Jackson asked all the NBA All-Stars if they be any other player who would it be? Chauncey Billups’ answer put an ear-to-ear grin on my face:

“A.I. So I can get my Detroit No. 1 [jersey] back.”

New home for Hughes in New York?
The Tribune reported talks with the Knicks centered on a trade sending Larry Hughes to New York for Malik Rose and Jerome James collapsed Wednesday. But a league source said talks were revived Thursday and Hughes could be moving to New York for James and former Bull Tim Thomas.

That would be somewhat hilarious given that the Bulls once sent Tim Thomas home for poor practice habits, exactly one of the reasons the Bulls have distanced themselves from Hughes.

Also, ESPN.com's Chad Ford is reporting the Kings could be moving Andres Nocioni to the Celtics.

Griz trade for Mihm
UPDATE: The 2013 second-round pick is protected through the 55th pick.

The Grizzlies have traded a conditional 2013 second-round pick to the Los Angeles Lakers for Chris Mihm and cash considerations, an NBA source confirmed Wednesday afternoon. The deal is expected to be announced this evening or tomorrow morning.

Mihm’s $2.5 contract expires after this season. Several NBA sources said the Grizzlies likely will consummate “one or two” more financial-related trades between now and the league’s trade deadline Thursday at 2 p.m.

The Kings have agreed on a trade to send forward Shelden Williams and point guard Bobby Brown to Minnesota in exchange for fourth-year guard Rashad McCants and veteran big man Calvin Booth, according to two league sources.

On the financial front, the deal - which is done but pending league approval - takes the Kings off the hook for the $736,420 owed to Brown next season (player option) while giving them two players who have expiring contracts in McCants ($2.6 million, restricted free agent this summer) and Booth ($1.1 million). On the floor, McCants enters as a fiery addition to the backcourt who will be looking to breath new life into his career in Sacramento after falling out of the TImberwolves' rotation this season. The 6-foot-4, North Carolina product who was drafted 14th overall in 2005 scored a season-high 23 points at New York on Dec. 26, but has struggled to find minutes or make an impact otherwise. Booth hasn't played this season.

With Williams and Brown leaving Sacramento, they become the latest Kings experiments that simply didn't pay off. Brown was signed last summer as a hot commodity, an undrafted point guard out of Cal State Fullerton who played one season in Germany and drew league-wide interest during July's summer league in Las Vegas in which he flourished while playing wtih New Orleans. Yet even with Kings starting point guard Beno Udrih struggling this season, Brown didn't pan out as Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie had hoped.

Cavs after Shaq; Pistons quiet
The Cavaliers, frantic to build a championship team now to either entice LeBron James to stay beyond 2010, or to win one before he leaves, are making waves.

According to league sources, they are in discussions with the Suns, offering Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic for Shaquille O'Neal. They have also revived talks with the Bucks, offering Wally Szczerbiak for Richard Jefferson.

As for the Pistons, all is quiet.

Thunder void trade for Chandler
The Oklahoma City Thunder doctors have red-flagged a turf toe condition with newly acquired center Tyson Chandler and the New Orleans Hornets trade has been voided, league executives said Wednesday night. “It’s blown up,” one league executive said.

The Hornets and Thunder completed the Chandler trade on Tuesday for Joe Smith,Chris Wilcox and the rights to draft pick DeVon Hardin, but lingering problems with a “turf toe” injury crushed the deal, league sources said.

Chandler had surgery on the toe two years ago. “It’s not going to end his career,” one source familiar with the injury said, “but it could hinder it.”

According to numerous league sources, a trade sending Kings players Brad Miller and John Salmons to Chicago in exchange for Andres Nocioni, Drew Gooden, Michael Ruffin and Cedric Simmons has been agreed upon and is pending league approval.

In a separate deal with Portland, fourth-year forward Ike Diogu comes to the Kings for Ruffin. The Kings are also expected to receive approximately $1 million in the trade with Portland.

The trades put their roster at 17 players, and it is expected that they will waive newly-acquired point guard Sam Cassell and third-year guard Quincy Douby. They will need to make an additional cut as well to trim the roster to a league-limit 15.

Clippers Coach Mike Dunleavy, while not condoning Randolph's action, gave some insight into his player's frame of mind. Apparently Randolph learned his father was critically ill shortly before the game in Phoenix. "Obviously you don't want anybody doing that," Dunleavy said. "But he found out before the game, literally in the locker room before the game, about his dad.

Randolph was able to get back to Indianapolis, which is where his father is hospitalized. He spoke on the telephone to Dunleavy and apologized after the suspension was handed down. "He said to me, 'Coach, I'm sorry. I had a lot going through my head,' " Dunleavy said.

As for Amundson, he expected Randolph would get some form of discipline. They were going at each other before the incident, which escalated when Randolph pushed Amundson to the floor. Then came the smack. "I knew he'd be suspended, so I'm not surprised," Amundson said. "It's not my call, but he definitely deserved it."

Source: Ginobili injury not season-ending
The San Antonio Spurs’ delay to release any specific information about Manu Ginobili’s right ankle injury has led some opposing GMs to speculate that the injury could be serious. Delaying the announcement until after the Thursday trade deadline would help keep the Spurs from losing any leverage in their ongoing talks.

One Spurs source said the team is still waiting on additional test results. When asked whether the injury was potentially season-ending, he said, “No, not at all.”

Spurs officials publicly announced only that Ginobili won’t join them on their road trip. Ginobili injured his left ankle in last season’s playoffs and underwent surgery in August. The injury to his right ankle, while still potentially significant, is not believed to be as serious as his previous injury.

The Minnesota Timberwolves say forward Al Jefferson underwent a successful surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The procedure was performed Wednesday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

Jefferson was injured in a Feb. 8 game at New Orleans. The team says he'll be sidelined indefinitely as he begins rehab.

The Indiana Pacers' fading playoff hopes likely rest on an MRI to be done on All-Star forward Danny Granger's right foot later today.

Granger, who is sixth in the league in scoring, left in the second quarter of Wednesday's 103-94 loss to the Charlotte Bobcats with a sprained right foot.

"It's really painful," Granger said. "It's an unfortunate series of events. Hopefully I won't be out long."

Tracy McGrady is out for the year, thanks to microfracture surgery on his ailing left knee. We think.

At least that’s what he told ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith on Tuesday, and what he told the world on his Web site Wednesday morning.

Problem is, that is not a decision that he, the Rockets, and the team’s doctors came to after a discussion of his situation. The extent of it, according to what Chronicle Rockets beat writer Jonathan Feigen found out, is that McGrady let the team know he was “leaning” toward having the procedure done.

Mihm dealt in salary dump
The Lakers dealt backup center Chris Mihm to Memphis on Wednesday for a conditional second-round draft pick in 2013, their second trade this month aimed at lowering their payroll.

Mihm's salary this season is $2.5 million, meaning the Lakers will shed about $2 million in salary and luxury-tax payments. By trading Vladimir Radmanovic to Charlotte, the Lakers saved between $7 million and $8 million in salary cap space the next two seasons, which may help re-sign Trevor Ariza or Lamar Odom, both of whom are free agents this summer. "In these economic times it's important for teams to try and reach what their goals are," Coach Phil Jackson said. "We have a goal to be economically feasible as an organization, and we ran a bit heavy and deep. Now we're cutting back."

Mihm played only 18 games this season, though his role increased after Andrew Bynum got hurt. Additional playing time exposed Mihm's inability to shake the rust from two injury-plagued seasons, leading Jackson to say the 7-footer looked "a beat slow" after a 2-for-10 shooting night Tuesday against Atlanta.

Thunder Resinds Chandler Trade
Tyson Chandler is going back to New Orleans. The Thunder on Wednesday night rescinded its trade with the Hornets because of concerns from the medical staff that were raised during Chandler’s physical. NBA teams aren’t allowed to discuss a player’s medical condition, but Yahoo Sports, citing league executives, reports the medical condition is turf toe.

Chris Wilcox and Joe Smith will now return to the Thunder, and OKC will regain the draft rights to DeVon Hardin, the 50th overall pick in the 2008 draft. “Yesterday we were excited to add Tyson, but at the same time we have to make tough decisions,” said Thunder general manager Sam Presti. “There were some things in the medical process and outside consultants that gave us some concern. “We have to listen to the people (conducting) our medicals. We feel the right decision for us was to move in another direction. We’re disappointed it did not work out. At the same time we look forward to having both Chris and Joe back in Thunder uniforms.”

Chandler had surgery on his left big toe on April 20, 2007, two days after the Hornets played their final game as the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets. He missed the final eight games of that 2006-07 season because of the toe injury. Chandler has missed 20 games this season, including the past 14 with a sprained ankle, and was slowed by a toe injury earlier this season.

Pacers wonder if Mike Dunleavy is out for season: The Indianapolis Star (Mike Wells) reports: The Indiana Pacers have gone from being optimistic that swingman Mike Dunleavy will soon return to the lineup from his right knee problems to wondering if he’ll play again this season. “I don’t know,” coach Jim O’Brien said when asked about Dunleavy’s status. “I know when they say he’s out indefinitely, there is a chance he can come back. When that is, this year? I’m not sure. I don’t feel like we have all the (medical) information available to make that determination yet.” … O’Brien continues to team Jarrett Jack in the backcourt with T.J. Ford in Dunleavy’s place.

Magic to acquire Alston in 3-team deal
The Orlando Magic are on the verge of acquiring one more point guard -- Houston's Rafer Alston -- to fill the void created by Jameer Nelson's potentially season-ending shoulder injury.NBA front-office sources told ESPN.com that Orlando, Houston and Memphis have reached agreement on a three-way trade that was submitted before the league's 3 p.m. ET trade-deadline buzzer sounded Thursday.

After acquiring Tyronn Lue from Milwaukee earlier this month as its first Nelson fill-in, Orlando has managed to land Alston by agreeing to surrender a first-round pick to the Grizzlies. The Rockets are expected to receive Grizzlies guard Kyle Lowry, Orlando forward Brian Cook and perhaps two other minimum-salaried players to make the finances work.

The deal is expected to be announced later Thursday after receiving formal league approval. Deals can be approved after the deadline as long as they were submitted to the league office before 3 p.m.

Suns likely to keep Amare Stoudemire
A source familar with Phoenix Suns discussions involving Amare Stoudemire tells InsideHoops.com editor Jeff Lenchiner that there’s a very good chance the star power forward won’t be going anywhere this season.

There have been rumors involving Stoudemire and multiple teams around the league for much of the last month, and especially over the last two weeks.

And, talks have taken place. But the source tells InsideHoops.com that the Suns feel that the coaching change is probably enough for now. Of course, it only takes one team to make an offer that the Suns, or anyone else, cannot refuse. But as of now, odds are Stoudemire stays in Phoenix for the time being.

Return to Detroit Pistons
