Terry Porter appreciation thread
or not. Poor guy didn't even get his own appreciation thread. Terry Porter we wish you well but the honest truth is, you were never ready to handle this team with a "stunning" line-up. I don't blame anyone, Porter had made non-believers outta most of us with his style of play. At first we were excited about getting a "defensive-minded" coach but we never saw that, everyone was still blazing us up for 100+ any given night. The truth is, and I've said this before, this team was a hip-check away from a 'ship and Kerr decided to hand this team over to an unproven coach. Then things started getting from bad to worse by the game. It almost seemed like if the players had given up on Porter and Porter had given up on the players. A change was needed, no doubt. We are only 2 games into the Gentry-era but aside from the opponent (Clippers), it has been 2 back 2 back amazing games, to say the least. I see brighter days with Gentry as our head coach.

I'm sure Terry Porter is doing fine, he got a huge buy out from the Suns and is probally going back to the Pistons as an assistant or going to Portland where he spent most of his years as a player. Some guys are great headcoaches and some guys arn't, Porter doesn't seem like the HC type of guy, he seems more like a behind the scenes assistant. He was to gruff to be a HC basically, on the otherhand from what we've seen of Gentry he's going to be good for this team.

Re: Terry Porter appreciation thread
Nash said it pretty well after the first Clippers game. Porter really wasn't terrible, he tried to get this team to play defense and slow the ball down but this team has way too many ego's and playing slow makes the ego's worse. Appreciate what he tried to do with this team but he just wasn't the right coach for this squad. He will be an NBA coach next year is my guess.

Hey, I feel bad for the guy. He did not get a fair shot, but this was the wrong job, wrong team, wrong time. He might have been a coach for a rebuilding team. I put this on Kerr for his bad judgment, but give him credit for correcting this.
I wish him luck, but he can have a nice vacation on that buyout he just got.

I agree. he was better suited for a rebuilding younger team, rather than a 'ship-ready team. He can blame Kerr for this.

Ya, it's hard to feel bad for a guy that got 4 Mil for 4 months of work.

Thank You Terry,
for showing us and the rest of the NBA
KERR'S ASS
(when will this learning curve be over ?)
PS... I have enjoyed the national media roasting of Sarver and Kerr'veball. Credit (blame) where it is due...and this going to those who have asked for accountability.

+1 and well said - not Porter's fault for taking the job - how could he say no? But all fault to Kerr for offering it.
I'm sad for Porter that word got out, he was apparently next to last to know he was canned, etc. Frankly, Sarver-Kerr waited too long, which I put down to not wanting to fire hsi buddy and admit the mistake.

Re: Terry Porter appreciation thread
Porter applied for a job he wasn't prepared to take. He convinced his boss he could handle it, and failed to do so from day 1. He came in to put out a concerning fire, and ended up causing an inferno. Ultimately, it's Kerr's fault for being convinced, but Porter CLEARLY bit off more than he could chew.
Porter failed to capture the attention and respect of the players. That should have been priority #1. Instead, he skipped that step and went straight into turning the team upside down.
You dont build a dam without controlling the river first, because it makes a huge mess for everyone and nothing gets done.

Re: Terry Porter appreciation thread
I don't appreciate what he did to the Suns. He fundamentally he has what it takes to coach a young team since he brings a defensive mindset. However this is just one of those situations where the it was just the wrong job for him. There's no way you would pay $5mil-$6mil Phil Jackson or Pops to coach the Thunder, just as the Celtics wouldn't pay Thunder Dan to coach their veteran team.
I do feel a little bad for him since he has been made the scapegoat of Kerr's mismanagement, but he should've known what he was walking into from the beginning when clearly we were a veteran team that required only slight tweaking and not a complete overhaul as he was trying for.

Re: Terry Porter appreciation thread
He was Kerrs choice because of his slow down defensive mindedness, which everyone wanted and hated on the suns for in the MD era. TP was doing what he was hired to do and it backfired fast.
