As hopeful contenders around the NBA clamor to make themselves better at the trade deadline, the San Antonio Spurs would gladly settle for an acquisition from within. First, though, they'll need Manu Ginobili's ankle to comply. The Spurs will likely be without their star guard for a second straight game when they look to avoid a third consecutive loss for the first time since early November on Thursday night against the reeling Detroit Pistons. Ginobili has had a variety of minor injuries throughout his seven-year NBA career, missing at least five games in every season. Offseason surgery on his left ankle forced him to miss the first 12 games in 2008-09, and he began experiencing pain in his right ankle prior to the All-Star break. The NBA's reigning sixth man of the year didn't travel to New York on Tuesday as the Spurs (35-17) continued their eight-game rodeo trip, staying in San Antonio to undergo tests on the ankle.

The Spurs haven't released specific information about the injury, but it's unlikely Ginobili will be available for Thursday's game -- the league's first after the 3 p.m. EST trading deadline -- or the finale of the trip Saturday in Washington. San Antonio, which was believed to have interest in New Jersey's Vince Carter and Milwaukee's Richard Jefferson, could have used some help with Ginobili sidelined against the Knicks. Tim Duncan missed a potential game-winning shot at the end of regulation, then New York took control in overtime, winning 112-107. "I got some shots to go down and started feeling good about it," said Duncan, who had 19 of his 26 points after halftime. "I wish the last one would've gone, too, but such is life." While Duncan's last-second shot didn't fall, Tony Parker couldn't get anything to go down all night. Parker, one of the top shooters among guards in the league at 48.7 percent, was 5-of-20 and finished with 14 points. Another loss in Detroit would give San Antonio its first three-game skid since opening the season 0-3.The Spurs had their three stars healthy for their first matchup against Detroit (27-25) this season Dec. 2, but like many of their recent meetings with the Pistons, it didn't matter.

Rasheed Wallace and Allen Iverson each scored 19 points, and San Antonio let a fourth-quarter lead slip away in an 89-77 loss -- its third straight and sixth in eight games to Detroit -- that left coach Gregg Popovich unhappy. "The most disturbing thing is that we were very soft," Popovich said. "I think Detroit intimidated us. It was really sad to watch in that respect. I thought we totally folded to their aggressive play." The Pistons, though, haven't been intimidating anyone with their play lately. They've lost four in a row and are 5-13 since Jan. 10. Detroit is 14-14 at The Palace after going 34-7 last season and has been dreadful there recently. A 92-86 loss to the Bucks on Tuesday was the Pistons' seventh in eight home games. "You are supposed to play your best basketball at home, and we obviously aren't doing that," said Iverson, who had 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting. "I don't think there's any focus. "It's easy to be focused when you are on the road and have 20,000 of their fans cheering against you, but you can't come home and expect your fans to win the games for you. They help, but you've got to play." While Rodney Stuckey has been struggling lately in his role as a starter, averaging 9.0 points on 33.3 percent shooting in his last five games, Richard Hamilton is thriving off the bench. Hamilton is averaging 26.2 points over his last five.

Report: Wolves, Kings trade former lottery picks
Minnesota gets: F Sheldon Williams, G Bobby Brown
Sacramento gets: G Rashad McCants, C Calvin Booth

The Minnesota Timberwolves have agreed to trade guard Rashad McCants to the Sacramento Kings for forward Shelden Williams in a swap of disappointing lottery picks, two people with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press. The Wolves also got rookie guard Bobby Brown from the Kings and sent rarely used center Calvin Booth to Sacramento.

McCants was the 14th overall pick in 2005. He is averaging 9.1 points per game, but has appeared in only six games since Jan. 1. Williams was the fifth overall pick in 2006 by Atlanta. He has never fulfilled the promise he showed while at Duke and is averaging just 3.7 points and 2.6 rebounds for the Kings.

Kings trim salary, send Miller, Salmons to Bulls for Nocioni, Gooden
Chicago gets: F/C Brad Miller, G/F John Salmons
Sacramento gets: F Andres Nocioni, F Drew Gooden, F Michael Ruffin and F Cedric Simmons
Portland gets: F Michael Ruffin, F Ike Diogu

The Sacramento Kings are the latest NBA team to engage in cost-cutting moves that will pare money from the team's books next season.

The Kings agreed on Wednesday to a trade that sends forward John Salmons and center Brad Miller to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for forwards Drew Gooden and Andres Nocioni, according to league sources. The deal will reduce Sacramento's obligations next season, saving the Kings millions on the salary cap and keeping them well under any potential luxury tax payments. Gooden, making $7.15 million this season, will likely come off the team's cap after this year, and now, the team is free of the $5.4 million due to Salmons in 2009 and the $12 million due to Miller in '09.

Lakers free up payroll, send Mihm to Grizzlies
Sacramento also got Michael Ruffin and Cedric Simmons in the deal, but immediately traded Ruffin to the Portland Trail Blazers for forward Ike Diogu and cash. The Kings then waived guard Quincy Douby and veteran Sam Cassell, acquired on Tuesday from Boston,

Mihm appeared in 18 games for the Lakers this season, averaging two points and 1.9 rebounds while playing 4.8 minutes per game for the overall NBA leaders. Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson indicated the club made the deal largely to trim its payroll while helping Mihm's chances of landing a better job next season.

Mihm, the seventh overall pick in the 2000 draft, couldn't consistently crack Jackson's playing rotation despite the injury absence of fellow 7-footer Andrew Bynum, who could be out until May after tearing a ligament in his right knee Jan. 31. Mihm played 17 minutes in the Lakers' win over Atlanta on Tuesday night, but didn't play at all in Los Angeles' final game before the All-Star break.

Celtics trade Cassell to Kings
Boston gets: Conditional second-round pick in 2015
Sacramento gets: G Sam Cassell

The 39-year-old Cassell hasn't played this season for the Celtics, who acquired him in early March before their run to the NBA title. He essentially served as another assistant coach this season with Boston, which also sent cash considerations to Sacramento in the trade.

Pistons trade Acker to Clippers
Pistons get: Second-round pick in 2011, conditional second-rounder in 2013
Clippers get: G Alex Acker

The Detroit Pistons traded Alex Acker to the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday, creating salary-cap space for moves the next two offseasons. Detroit dealt the seldom-used guard and its second-round pick in 2011 for a conditional second-round selection in 2013 from the Clippers. Los Angeles also waived center Cheikh Samb.

The Pistons will have about $23 million in salary-cap space, giving them a lot of money to retool their team during the next two years after slipping from an Eastern Conference power to a middle-of-the pack team.

Raptors send O'Neal, Moon to Heat for Marion, Banks
Miami gets: C Jermaine O'Neal, F Jamario Moon, future first-round draft pick
Toronto gets: F Shawn Marion, G Marcus Banks, cash considerations

The Miami Heat and Toronto Raptors completed a long-discussed trade Feb. 13, with the Heat sending forward Shawn Marion and guard Marcus Banks to Toronto in exchange for forward/center Jermaine O'Neal and guard Jamario Moon. The Heat also receive a future first-round draft pick, to come sometime between 2010 and 2015.

It's lottery-protected, essentially meaning the first time the Raptors make the playoffs after this season, their first-rounder goes to Miami. If Miami does not get that first-round pick in 2010, it will get an additional second-round pick that year.

J.A. Adande: The salary cap is expected to drop next season, with a league memo suggesting a hypothetical number of $57.3 million, according to two team executives. Again, that is only hypothetical; the actual figure won't be finalized until this summer. The salary cap is determined by taking 51 percent of the league's basketball related income and dividing it among the 30 teams. The salary cap for the 2008-09 season is $58.68 million.

A smaller cap could affect the teams in position to make bids for free agents this year -- most notably Detroit, Oklahoma City and Memphis -- and if the number stays the same or drops again in 2010 it will impact the free agent class that is expected to include LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Amare Stoudemire.

• I'm also told that Sacramento will be releasing Mikki Moore after the Kings were unable to include him in any trades before the deadline. Given the leaguewide need for big men, there figures to be a fair bit of interest in Moore once he clears waivers. Expectation is high that he will wind up in Boston, reports ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher.

Chad Ford: Spies in New Jersey say it looks like Vince Carter will finish the season as a Net. With just 45 minutes to go before the trade deadline, talks with Carter stalled. It's not impossible that things will heat up right toward the end, but right now, the odds are strongly in favor of Carter remaining in New Jersey, unless Nets owner Bruce Ratner goes back to management and tells them to dump him at any cost.

The Orlando Magic may have solved their gaping point guard issue, triggering a deal today that sends out seldom used and often disgruntled Brian Cook and a future first round draft pick. The deal is a three-team trade that will send Alston to Orlando, Brian Cook and Kyle Lowry to the Rockets and Orlando's future draft pick will land in Memphis. The Magic get a genuine starting caliber point guard, and did not have to give up any of their core players to do it.

Alston, also known in NBA circles as "Skip To My Lou", from his AND1 streetball days, has played for Magic coach Stan Van Gundy in Miami during the 2003-2004 season. In that season Alston started 28 games for Van Gundy and really proved his value as an NBA player. Last year Alston was the differencemaker for the Rockets down the stretch, but he has not been nearly as effective this year. Alston has started 48 games this season, and is a genuine playmaker.

The Magic had been reluctant to part with draft assets, labeling them as the only means to continue to add talent given the Magic's salary cap position. The deal is awaiting league approval, but according to multiple sources, the deal is all but done.

Ginobili diagnosed with stress reaction
Manu Ginobili has been diagnoised with a stress reaction in his right ankle and is expected to miss two to three weeks, the Spurs announced Thursday.

The injury was diagnosed after Ginobili underwent a series of examinations including an MRI and a CT scan.

Ginobili's injured ankle is not the same one he had surgery on last summer, forcing him to miss the first 12 games of the season. He is San Antonio's third-leading scorer, averaging 16.1 points off the bench.

Big Ben follows AI’s lead

Remember what I said when Iverson chopped the ‘rows? Pretty prophetic.

The On Deck Circle:Ben Wallace showed up for tonight’s Raptors/Cavaliers game sans his trademark brades/afro hair. When asked why, he used the Iverson Answer (9 and a half years is a long time to do anything), and said his 3-year old daughter can be the one doing braids and such from now on. I’m sure a better photo will surface, but enjoy this print screen in the meantime. (H/T: Ball Don’t Lie)

Sources: McCants to Kings, Williams to Wolves
The Minnesota Timberwolves have agreed to trade guard Rashad McCants to the Sacramento Kings for forward Shelden Williams in a swap of disappointing lottery picks, two people with knowledge of the deal told the Associated Press on Thursday.

The Wolves also got rookie guard Bobby Brown from the Kings and sent rarely used center Calvin Booth to Sacramento. McCants was the 14th overall pick in 2005. He is averaging 9.1 points per game, but has appeared in only six games since Jan. 1. The moody shooting guard from North Carolina fell out of the rotation shortly after Kevin McHale took over as coach. He hasn't played more than 15 minutes in a game since Dec. 27 and has often been seen brooding on the bench because of the decrease in playing time.

At his best, McCants is a capable scorer off the bench. He averaged 14.9 points in that role last season in his first full year back from microfracture knee surgery. Williams was the fifth overall pick in 2006 by Atlanta. He has never fulfilled the promise he showed while at Duke and is averaging just 3.7 points and 2.6 rebounds for the Kings. The burly power forward has only reached double figures in scoring three times this season and has done it just twice in rebounding.

Thunder Swap Wilcox To NYK For Rose
The Oklahoma City Thunder have agreed to trade forward Chris Wilcox to the New York Knicks for forward Malik Rose and cash, according to Chris Sheridan of ESPN.

Both players have contracts that expire this summer, Wilcox for a tad under $6.8 million and Rose for just over $6.8 million. For the Knicks this deal is all about the money. It shaves a few dollars of what their final luxury tax number will be and gives them a power forward who can run a little in Mike D'Antoni's offense. Wilcox's strengths are scoring and rebounding, but he's only an average defender and needs to get touches in the offense to be productive on both ends of the floor.

Rose was not part of the rotation with the Knicks and likely won't be playing for the Thunder either. Wilcox was averaging 8.4 points and 5.3 rebounds in 19.4 minutes per game for the Thunder. Rose averaged 1.7 points and 1.7 rebounds in 18 games for the Knicks.
