Kings, Wolves Do 4-Player Deal
According to Sam Amick of the Sacramento Bee, the Sacramento Kings have agreed to a trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves that sends guard Bobby Brown and forward Shelden Williams to the Wolves for guard Rashad McCants and big man Calvin Booth. This trade is pending league approval.

Like with yesterday's move of Brad Miller and John Salmons to Chicago for Michael Ruffin, Drew Gooden, Cedric Simmons and Andres Nocioni, and the subsequent move of Ruffin to Portland for Ike Diogu, this is all about the money. Booth and McCants are both expiring contracts for the Kings, though McCants (a restricted free agent) will place a cap hold on the Kings of $10.9 million because he is coming off the fourth season of his rookie scale contract as a first-round pick. It's assumed the Kings will waive their rights to McCants at the end of the season, making him an unrestricted free agent. This move also gets the Kings out from under Bobby Brown's $736,420 player option for 2009-10.

For the Wolves, it saves them a few dollars this season and they get another guard to fill the backcourt next year for cheap. Shelden Williams has never lived up to his billing as a fifth overall pick out of Duke and will have a hard time finding a new contract this summer. Like Williams, McCants has never really lived up to expectations. Coming out of North Carloina as a lottery pick, McCants struggled with the transition as an undersized shooting guard and suffered various injuries, including microfracture surgery on his knee. Brown was a big name this past summer after a very good Vegas Summer League, but wasn't able to crack the rotation of a Kings team with inconsistent point guard play. Booth has logged just a single minute this season and has career averages of 3.3 points and 2.8 rebounds in a 10-year career spanning six teams.

Bulls Make Another Move
It seems as if one move wasn't quite enough for John Paxson before he called it quits as Bulls GM. ESPN.com's Chad Ford is reporting that the Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks have agreed to a deal that will send Larry Hughes to the Knicks in exchange for Tim Thomas and Jerome James. This move is currently awaiting league approval.

The reasons for Chicago making this move are two-fold, and neither one of them has anything to do with improving the team. On the one hand, it removes the cantankerous personality of Larry Hughes from the Bulls' locker room, providing him with an opportunity to play--something he was not getting in Chicago. The other reason is that it saves Chicago a little bit of money, though not immediately. Thomas and James make a combined $12.49 million this year, and $13 million next season. Compare that to Hughes's $12.8 million this year and $13.7 next season, and Chicago saves themselves almost a million dollars in salary.

Otherwise, this trade is just a blip. Not too exciting, and doesn't really accomplish all that much. The Bulls are beginning to make it known that they hope to be players in the 2010 Sweepstakes, and this trade does nothing to help or hurt that. Moving Hinrich for shorter, expiring contracts, however, would go a long way in moving towards that end. It's the second time the Bulls will have acquired Thomas without much use for him, though with his contract spilling into next season it doesn't seem as though it'll be quite as easy to just send him home like they did last time. They may look to move him again this summer, or may explore buying him out at some point. In any event, the relationship between Thomas and the Bulls can't be particularly happy after the mess they went through a few years ago. James, on the other hand, has an injured Achilles and isn't expected to suit up for Chicago this year.

Tyson's Big Toe: After two days of Hornets' players complaining about what was evidently a cost cutting move by the Hornets, the Oklahoma City Thunder rescinded the trade that sent Tyson Chandler to OKC and Joe Smith and Chris Wilcox to the Hornets. The Thunder apparently failed Chandler's physical due to a "big toe" issue. Chandler was said to be shocked to hear the news, however his Hornet teammates could not have been happier in hearing he was returning to the team. Its possible Chandler is re-dealt before the deadline, but based on comments made after last night's Hornets game it seems unlikely that New Orleans will make another move with Chandler. The Thunder on the other hand were said to be scrambling to make another deal involving both players in either a single transaction or multiple smaller deals. Given the complexities involved in making a deal, especially at the deadline the Thunder may not have enough time to make something happen.

Magic get Rafer Alston In 3-Way Deal
NBA front-office sources tell ESPN.com that Orlando is acquiring Rafer Alston from Houston to fill the void created at point guard by Jameer Nelson's shoulder injury.

The Rockets will receive Memphis guard Kyle Lowry, Orlando forward Brian Cook and perhaps two other minimum-salaried players to make the finances work.

The Grizzlies will receive a first-round pick from Orlando.

Kings, Wolves Make Trade
The Kings have agreed on a trade to send forward Shelden Williams and point guard Bobby Brown to Minnesota in exchange for fourth-year guard Rashad McCants and veteran big man Calvin Booth, according to two league sources.

On the financial front, the deal - which is done but pending league approval - takes the Kings off the hook for the $736,420 owed to Brown next season (player option) while giving them two players who have expiring contracts in McCants ($2.6 million, restricted free agent this summer) and Booth ($1.1 million).
